All of the above. :) This is basically the "beta" version of the map, so any sort of critique, feedback, testing, ideas, whatever.

After many delays, it's finally here. Adapted from the StarCraft: Brood War map, The Rings of Power, originally created by Celeborn(WC) and Isildur(WC) / Kalreborn. Special thanks to Diablito and Harbinger for assistance with obstacles I encountered in the data editor and triggers.

Just search for The Rings of Power on Battle.net.

There are tips at the beginning of the game to help players out, but here's a breakdown of how the map works:

This is an LotR-style map. Each faction has two or more main buildings which spawn units on two separate timers. Each time you build a castle (the building that costs 5000 vespene gas), your spawns become larger and more powerful.

If you lose a main, you lose the spawn associated with the main you lost - however, several mains are tied to special story events, so don't quit just because your spawner gets blown away! You might receive special units, or your other spawner might become stronger to help compensate.

There are several groups of hidden units throughout the map, both normal units and heroes. Normal units are recruited by finding them with Spies (observers), whereas heroes have to be rescued by particular heroes owned by different factions. Several of these can be recruited by multiple factions on the "good" side, but they can only be rescued once, so make sure you "share" the hidden heroes or other units with your allies if needed.

The Rings of Power takes place between the time of the forging of the rings, up to The Last Alliance of Elves and Men. Face off against the Dark Lord's forces as Lindon, Mirkwood, Numenor, Gondor, or Khazad-dum! Or squash those meddling Humans, Elves, and Dwarves as the Haradwaith, the forces of the Witch King (Ered Mithran), or as Sauron himself (Mordor)!

Special Features: - Lobby selection system. - Absent player factions share control with their allies, so skilled players may be able to play without a full lobby!

Unfortunately, I've never been very good at terrain. The original terrain was designed entirely by the person I made the map with, and he did an excellent job of creating an intricate terrain based upon multiple maps of Middle-earth, and then he fudged the design a bit to make the map more fun to play.

However, I'm not a visual-design sort of person, and I didn't even realize I could turn on the small grid until I had half the map already laid-out. ;) I've fixed a few bad inconsistencies, but for most terrain-based revisions, I will probably try to find someone else to offer assistance.

Yeah, most of the old LotR maps aren't going to convert right. Corroborating with other mapmakers, we have decided this has to do with some of the third-party utilities that were used to make some of the SC1 maps. I also attempted to rebuild my terrain using the old map as a reference, and it didn't come out quite right due to the conversion from the 2D plane to 3D. Some areas are too large and others are squished.

I'm also working on an LotR-style map, an adaptation of The Rings of Power from Brood War. This map is also nearly complete, and will be ready for beta-testing in a day or two.
