posted a message on Why Don't People like Lotr Games?

In light of the recent asking of why people dislike SotIS, and the interesting revelations and discussions that it provoked, I want to ask a similar question and promote discussion about it. Kalreborn was kind enough to recreate all the great lotr maps we loved so much in sc1 for sc2. These maps, living fossils themselves, come from an sc1 veteran and lover of lotr. However, I feel that lotr doesn't get its worth in merit. Some of the reasons I have explored in others, but i want to hear if there is more to it.

So here goes, why do a vast majority of people dislike, or for that matter, refuse to try lord of the rings games? The games offer a skill cieling comparable to Dota, and anybody who loves grand battles loves lord of the rings. LOTR has a solid core community, which speaks volumes of its depth. Surely more would be interested in...delving deeper per se?

    TL;DR

Why do a vast majority of the people on battle net dislike lotr games?

But it's just as arrogant to think that you'll be able to push the "publish" button, tell a few of your closest friends about it, and watch it skyrocket to page one. The search bar goes a loooong way to at least making any map decently played. Just (yes, it may not be "just" for some people, but mapmaking is at least partially a social experience...) go into the forums of a few SCII sites and ask people to try your map, and i'm sure you'll gain more of a following than Rodrigo has with his spamming persistent advertisement of Debates :P

And aside from all of that, How do the "Categories" not solve your problem? Up and Coming plus Fun Or Not sound like a great way to try new interesting maps.

Or you could make a rage thread and insult every other map besides yours arrogantly, then watch as people swarm to your map to say its bad "hey, that's pretty good". Its been proven to work you know. Isn't that right RCIX?

posted a message on Mods: MotiveMe or MaverK?

I am currently in the works with a special new races mod. But I had a few inqueries about whether to go the MotiveMe with Cortex, or MaverK with SC2BW. From what I can tell and have read and seen, Motive and Mav treated their mods very differently. MaverK is incredibly protective of his mod, and I wouldn't be surprised if he has it backed up in multiple places, so that he can't lose it, but others can't find it.

Motive, on the other hand, may have released his map to the public, which is why we have so many Cortex Roleplay engines about. I would like to ask both MotiveMe and MaverK, as well the mapster community, what is the best way to have a mod? Should it be protected quite strictly, with backups everywhere, or should it be opensource. Personally, i'm unsure. I would like it opensource, but this means that any noob with knowledge of the Data Editor can mess around and "Rebalance" my mod in favor of their favorite race. However, it also allows people to release their own stunning(and not so stunning) terrains along with my map, without any effort on my part. I personally don't care about learning, this was meant to be a showcase of how the Data Editor could be used to make fantastic things.

The alternative is much harder, but much safer. I will not be decredited, there is no chance of that. However, I might lose the mod, and if i do, i will either have to recreate from scratch, or dump the project. Another danger is lack of renown, and because I only have my own mod in my own hands, there is a lesser chance of popularity because less people know about my mod/can use it. I want to know your opinions mapster, this is a heavy choice to weigh. Too heavy for me.

Thanks that's just what I needed.

Karawasa, are you implying you've been to an art museum?

    I'll rephrase my post.

Replace any instance of "me" or "my work" in my op post with "anyone" or "anyone's work".

Spot on Vexal, somewhere in there, you're doing just fine ^_^

The first thing anyone else does when they make a comment about anything is point out any reason they can think of to discredit the person.

The majority of posts are those blaming others for problems with their maps, or blaming other maps for wasting space.

This should stop or the community will die.

Spot on Vexal! I agree 100%, bashing people because you think their work is bad is ridiculous.

@Karawasa, Please...do me a favor as my friend and colleague...shut up...you really seem to go out of your way to pick on Vexal, IDC what kind of rivalry you two have, you two are acting half my age. Please, don't be fools, because we have to stick together in times like this.

And the more replies that post gets too. I've seen tons of 'new map!' posts that ends up in oblivion because no one reads or replies to them. But Meph's 7 months QQ post was very entertaining to read. :) What happened to it! I went to the sc2 forum one day and couldn't find his thread..

    It was deleted! ^_^

posted a message on Smashcraft and Mephs
    Quote from RCIX: Go

Just a bit of commentary on Smashcraft, Mephs, and the mapping scene in general:

I've played smashcraft some, and it's really impressive. Easily one of the most innovative maps i've seen, and good things are probably in the future.

However, I probably won't play it (for reasons aside from not being that good). Why? Mephs acts like a bit of a spoiled brat. He got one of the best game editors in existence, crafted an impressive map, but he melted down at least once on the blizzard forums basically because other maps are popular and his isn't. If your map is that much better than SotIS, then put the work into advertising it! SotIS has only like 2 people on the dev team (and a few to help out on the forums and with a league) and it's way more popular.

Granted, the popularity system needs work, but that's no reason to throw a tantrum like he did. All it does is help convince blizzard that mappers can't be pleased, and while it may drive players to you in the short term eventually you'll get a bad reputation and no one will be interested in anything you make after a while.

I also think that this sort of attitude is what is causing SCII mapping to fall apart. All of the high profile mappers got steamed because their maps didn't get really popular very fast (as well as blizzard not moving at the speed they'd like in fixing up issues with the editor) and left. If all of them would have just shut up and worked a little bit on publicizing their map (like participating in a Map Nights-esque event regularly), i'd bet there'd be a flood of innovative custom maps.

All that said, i'm for giving feedback to blizzard, as long as you don't sound like a snotty 5 year old while doing it. If you're polite and patient, i'm quite confident Blizz will listen and at least try and help you work around any issues you may have.

    (/naive) ;)

    Sigh...

What a high strung jerk, you need to understand that "negatively reinforcing " people is a stupid idea. Don't like Smashcraft? Don't play it! Love it? Play it! You're only hurting yourself, however, when you decide to "negatively reinforce" Mephs. He gained far more supporters of Smashcraft when he posted that thread than he lost potential supporters.

You came here with the intention of finding people who also want to "negatively reinforce" mephs or other mappers who "melt down". This did not deserve a post, and should well be locked by Gorandor, as it isn't quite discussion, as much as someone bragging about being a high strung jerk. People like you really need to learn that boycotting someone's game with the intention of possibly getting them to behave differently in the future will not work. Moreover, we do not need posts about it on mapster, it is simple as that. Go post on the battle net forums where you can find other noobs who share your opinion, and possibly a spark a noob discussion.

Good luck to you, hopefully you'll understand that while you're perfectly warranted in your opinion, voicing it is needless and a moot point.

posted a message on ITSC needs artists for a logo(See perks inside)

Hey guys, I recently became a member of Iron Tournaments of SC2(ITSC), and our leader Ironman and I have solidified a sponsorship for Team/Clan Revoki, a very prodigious and highly ranked clan. ITSC am now looking for any artists who may be willing to pm me with a logo I may use for Iron Tournaments.

We have no specifications in mind, but if you want some feedback, post in the thread and ask for an opinion on your idea. I will pm you back, logo accepted or not. The person who makes the best logo within the next few months will have their logo on ITSC and will be credited for their work. If you ever had the idea of going into the gaming or otherwise field as a designer, this is a good opportunity for you.

Revoki is high ranked, and gets casts by husky often, mentioning Iron Tournaments in some. For this reason, your logo and the credit towards your work will be looked at frequently.

    Good luck and have fun!
