keysexz, It doesn't surprise me that he wouldn't respond to you.
EDIT: Rodrigo I'm counting on you not to give up.
The map should be changed each week regardless of whether it is popular or not. Do not be deceived, popularity is such that a different map each week will increase chances of popularity, not decrease it. For example, the map that we are choosing, battle planets, was rising for a while, the new intriguing name gives every map a chance though. I do think that the description should be thus: Play Me. Everything else is implied. Also, keep the logo the mapster logo, a changing minimap only hurts chances. I suppose you have this all figured out, but back to the above. Every week, different people try maps below the top. We need just need to give the map a good boost, and according to the stats of what works it should get rolling. Except if the map isn't worth the time. Some maps are, some maps are not. But every map here seems like it gives an excellent variety.
One more thing, I'll be a supporter for this, simply because I want to know when the damn thing is done ;).
It's kind of silly. I never had a huge amount of respect for him initially, then he came on Mapcraft and forced a decent amount of the intangible substance. It's all but gone again by now.
That said, I'm going to keep an eye out from now on. Any more of this stuff, or anything turning sour, and I'll just lock it. I'm an advocate of free speech, but, come on...
You say you're an advocate of free speech but will lock Rodrigo's threads because most mapmakers, like people on battle net, are too STUPID to understand his POINT? Mozared, I respect you and Rodrigo about the same, because you both are excellent at what you do and you take the time to teach the community. Lemme dumb it down for all of you not understanding Rodrigo's point, he wants people to make TD's to add new and profound dimensions for the people of battle net.
I will paraphrase from a series of interviews Rodrigo did himself.
Most people don't like certain maps on battle net over others. They play these maps because a vast majority of the players who do like these maps and a vast majority of the players who don't like these maps play them anyway. This was done for 1v1 Obs over ICJug.
Now why would these maps be up here if a lot dont like them? Well first off, why don't these people like these maps? Maybe because they're not having fun because they've exhausted the learning process. In effect, games become less "fun" once you master them. And while this was done for an obs engine which is slightly different, the object remains the same.
Now all Rodrigo said, was that TDs need twists, the fact that a few inflammatory comments derailed the thread is no fault of Rodrigo's. Besides, the SOTIS unlocked thread was NEVER locked, and that was the most controversial thread on mapster in the last few months.
I'll start off this serious non-whining conversation with this question, is it possible to have a thriving niche community with frequent inflow easily in sc2? I have only ever seen one REAL community that is to be considered "niche". My own lotr community thrives below the internet sun. The maps are played by the fish who lurk in darker waters, waters that never see the light of day. Every so often, the community breaks the surface, but they usually stay below.
Still, this could be exception, phenomena, I dont know. Is it possible for a niche community to thrive in this popularity system?
Recently, a custom melee map has become popular on the NA servers called Team Monobattles. I really enjoyed the map a lot - it's 4v4 where each player can only make 1 type of unit - but it had some flaws. I felt like I could do better and it would be a nice small project, so over about two weeks I cranked out a playable alpha version called Hyper Team Monobattles with some new features, like new/campaign units, a new map, the ability to see your allies unit picks, better random functionality etc.
The problem is, I have no idea where to go from here. I don't know enough bnet people to even get a full 4v4 going, I have no idea where to promote the map. I know there's an audience, but I don't really know how I would go about informing people of this version. I haven't even really been able to play a full game from start to finish to test it, so I've kept it private.
How can I find players interested in playing something like this? Are there chat channels for people that like to play custom maps? What do I do with this map now that its playable?
Now what you need to do, is do your part to make the community better, if everyone tried a little harder to make the community better, the maps would suck less, and the people would be more willing to try new maps. This is possible, and this is what I preach. The longer we wait to ingrain our community spirit into SC2, the harder it's gonna be. We can change things, not just Blizzard. I suppose your wondering how to promote your map. I think the best way is to ask, "is my map going to go to the top?", if it's not that definitely means something's wrong. Star Battle worked it's way up from the bottom to the top. But all of it's copies failed their test. Oftentimes, however, a map never gets the same momentum it once had. Rodrigo's Nexus Word Wars was not the kind of map that people would look at and find "cool". Nexus Word Wars? Do I really want to play that? Rodrigo had to boost it higher and higher till it could get to the top. When it was republished, boosting was removed and that was it for Nexus Word Wars.
Clones won't do, you'll have to think of something more original, I'm sorry.
Interesting, were you a fan of lord of the rings in sc1? I made this post maybe half a year ago, before I found lotr, I since postponed Meme Wars for a more lord of the rings type map, rather than a lotrish map.
If you like lotr, my name in-game is UloseTheGame.140 and I can introduce you to the US lotr community, who plays maps like this a LOT. One of our mapmakers, JTaylor, has decided to take on the task of creating a diplo style map based on Song of Ice and Fire. I think that the lotr community might procure some interesting maps which might give the "epic rts" scene another chance in SC2. Pray tell, what region are you on?
Why not learn the editor and do it yourself? If you're looking to take full credit for a map in exchange for a ton of money, I would rather make a map for credit thank you. At least I have a lasting impact on the community in exchange for my hard work. Too many sell their souls for money, I think that any reading this post should ask for full credit, don't sell your hard work for a couple bucks when you could have a stable job for your hard work instead.
So there are no imported models.. lol. Sorry, i would never imagine one without it...
and you are right.. some people don't care about the lore or the "perfectionism".. feel?? and that's ok.
Others are dubious why it's not AS important as the rest (gameplay/features) and that should not deter you from trying..
you should advocate the addition of "lotr" models and you'd probably get huge accolades ...
Adding models would disenchant the game imo, I don't just enjoy the game without models, I couldn't even bear it WITH THEM. What are you afraid of? Really...The Lord of the Rings games are some of the most amazing on battle net. I dunno about anyone else, but I like the small family like channel, and imo, it would suck if the community was too big. But I think that more people is always good, and we always welcome good people to our community. I hope that people can come to channel "lotr" and at least make an attempt to try.
I know it's a bit unorthodox to post an ad in the terraining section, but it saves me a bit of time from not having to private message anyone. I want to, with all due respect, ask if any one terrainer would be willing to terrain me a lord of the rings map? Now I know it's not the right art theme, but I'm asking if any of you are willing to terrain with sc2 doodads and textures and the like. Layout and color is still important, I would want it as close to Middle Earth as possible, and the layout has to be precise, it cannot be willy-nilly. There are many maps you can look at, and I advise this one, to make things clear, I wish to have the map layout very similar or exact to that map. I thank anyone who decides they are up to the challenge of this job. It will be a hard one to make just right. Try to make it look as close to Middle Earth as possible, I thank you.
I certainly feel modding has always been, will always been, and is at this time, worth it. I don't care what they throw at us, because we always have something to gain from modding, even if our ability to show off our work is limited. After all, it takes a certain kind of dedicated person to mod games for free. The editor has many limits, especially in the coding department, this is a problem. But too many mappers have decided against modding, too often purely on principle. We need more dedicated modders who realize the system has always been crap, and the popularity system shows that at least blizzard is trying. Remember that DoTA's immense popularity didn't stop wc3 modding, and the popularity system, the biggest problem for mappers to data, should not prevent mapping. A wise friend of mine said it is a barrier to entry, but Blizzard is going to work with it since it shows at least more potential than wc3's system.
It's a self-promoting system yes, but we can do things to help it out. Refer to my post here for more info on that department. Dedication to mapping is so important in times where there are few maps that are worked hard at. I must admit few of the maps on the top of the list are as good as Mafia. Maybe SOTIS, to a degree.
In regards to you, who's question I never quite answered, I say that we quashed the editor complaints months ago, so I think if you're speaking about editor limitations, it is worth it, because they're small at this point. But there's a battle coming, where the popularity system must be fixed in innovative ways so that the game works as intended. I hope you'll join us.

Ulose.... Ummmm...... I thought you were 13, not 12.
I am 15 my friend, no lie, but I am pissed about people invoking shit over a kid. Does anyone here have a sense of right or wrong? The OP needs to just get out of here, because it doesn't make sense to pick on kids because they "lied".
Once again, I will be hosting map night, likely with Jade as my cohort >:D. The NA map night will be streamed from Scdebates(NOT A DEBATES STREAM) and will start between approximately 6:00 and 7:00. If you're up for a GREAT map night, show up! Our goal is a 30 person turnout, and hopefully, we will meet our goal, so show up, play some games, and have some fun!
As we know the past 2-3 weeks have been filled with poor attendance and lack of fun. So I have an idea. JademusSreg and I will be hosting Map Night, and I will be streaming. If you have an NA battle net account please attend and join in on the fun! We will be hosting starting at 7:00 PM EST, but you dont have to be in from the beginning to attend! Join channel Sc2mapster to become involved! We will be streaming from channelSc2debates(Contrary to popular belief, this isn't a debates stream -.-) so watch if you are unable to join :D.
If you wish to be on skype with me, contact me in sc2 UloseTheGame.140 and I will give you my skype information in detail.
