posted a message on Campaign units in Multi.

I think you can just use the campaign library instead of the melee library, as this should eliminate issues with assets not appearing. The campaign library should have everything you need, but I could be wrong on that.

posted a message on How to install custom maps?

I have noticed that Galaxy edit does create a "maps" directory in the install path. It seems to stick maps there that are tested by the editor, and I don't know if the main starcraft2.exe will see the path or not. It's worth an experiment, unless someone has already tried this.

posted a message on Actor vs. Unit

So I've spent the day attempting to get up to speed with the Galaxy Edit and couldn't help but notice something. I've also noticed that all the tutorials I've read in regards to Unit and Hero creation do not cover what is going on, and what everything is; they just explain how to do a specific task. I'm a theory guy, I'd rather learn the underlying theory and then formulate my own methods based on those theories.

In Unit and Hero creation, it seems as if Blizzard is using some kind of data abstraction method, much like the Pawn and Actor system that Unreal Engine uses. In Unreal engine, the "Pawn" is the visible avatar that you see rendered by the rendering engine, and is by Unreal terminology an actor. The "Controller," such as "uPlayerController" and "uAIController" are objects that "posses" the pawn, and is what governs its actions.

Now my question is how does the Actor relates to an actual unit in Galaxy Edit (of which I'm just gonna call Galaxy)?

posted a message on Why are there no campaing maps?

Now I'm new to the Starcraft 2 scene and Galaxy Edit and all that fun and stuff. But if campaigns are typically single player (disregard co-op for the sake of example), why in the name of Pete can we not release campaigns outside of bnet? I'm pretty darn sure that the 5 map limit and the lack of campaign features in Galaxy Edit is not going to stop anyone, especially me.

Of course I'm always interested in a good project. Right now I'm getting up to speed with the new editor, but once I do I'm willing to help as a scripter/programmer and QA testing.

posted a message on Turn based RPG vs. Real Time RPG

A small dilemma I've recently run into. I'm wanting to start on a rpg type map for the purpose of learning the new Galaxy Edit, and familiarizing myself with it's capabilities. I'm wanting to stretch what it can do, as I know that Blizzard by no means used the game engine to its fullest extent; I know its capable of much more. Usually the case with games where money dictates what happens.

I'm wanting to do a Final Fantasy style rpg; classic turn based rpg from the good 'ole days. But I also want to do a more real time rpg, with the player using a WASD control scheme. I really cannot make up my mind on this, as I like both schemes and sub genres. So what is everyone's thought on this?

posted a message on I just watched the most awesomest movie ever.

Inception is definitely the best of 2010. If it does not blow away the grammies, then something's wrong with the grammies. Me personally, Inception is now my favorite movie. I do not know if it is the best movie period, as movies like Momento, Matrix, Sin City, etc give it a run for its money.

posted a message on My map deleted from Bnet :(

I just kind of scanned the thread. This is leading me to believe that maybe we should not use Blizzard's publishing system directly. Publish to a third party site, such as this site, where the map is available for download. If it is truly popular, then people will publish it themselves onto bnet in order to play the multiplayer aspects. This way you get a true feeling on how popular a map is, instead of trusting Blizzard's own popularity system that probably doesn't work anyway, providing that it acts like most systems of its kind (they all don't work). Plus this bypasses the five map limit that Blizzard supposedly has in place.

If it is a single player map, then why bother putting it on bnet? A single player map published on a third party site cannot be censored by Blizzard.

posted a message on Dropping In

I figured that after strolling along for so long that I might stop being an introvert and say hi, since I figure that this might be a good place on the good 'ole web to start some good 'ole moddin' on a new title. It's been a while since there has been a "decent" title with some very good promise two weeks after release for some moddin'. Reminds me of the good 'ole days when I could crack open a file structure without fear of being banned off a companies server.

Name's Dark Warrior, former modder of Morrowind, Oblivion, the original Unreal, Starcraft, and Warcraft III. I cut my teeth however on Oblivion, which is where the majority of my experience is. Beta testing, scene development, terrain development, scripting, story-writing, pathmapping, and then just before I left the Oblivion scene, completely redoing the city of Anvil, doubling the size of the in game city.

So I'm looking to get back into modding. The last time I was on Battle.net before playing Starcraft 2 was when WoW came out, back when the scene with WC3 was hopping. So, what projects are currently going on? What's the overall quality of maps that we're seeing right now? What's popular? Also, how are people taking to Blizzard's publishing system? Have the third party sites (what I call the Underground) started publishing maps outside of bnet?
