posted a message on Mapster Mentoring

Hello, I'd love to be someone's mentee!

I'm pretty new to the Galaxy Editor. I poked around back in beta, but I haven't really done anything since. My ultimate goals are pretty big in scope so first I'd like work on some smaller more manageable projects to learn the editor. I suppose I could just go through a few tutorials, but this mentor program sounds more fun. :)

So if anyone who has a fairly broad knowledge of the editor would like to assign me a couple of progressively for difficult projects to help familiarize me with the editor I would be deliriously grateful! I know the first post said to contact the mentors directly, and if nobody replies back I suppose that's what I'll do. :p I just figured, in case some of the mentors were already getting overloaded with Mentees it might be preferable to post here first and maybe a mentor who isn't overwhelmed yet could pick me up.

The best way to reach me would either be PM or email ([email protected]). Or just reply to this thread, I'll be back to check on it.

posted a message on Blizzard owns our maps.

If I upload a map onto Blizzard's servers I want control of whether or not it's a "premium" map and if it were a premium map I want control over how much it costs. Should that be a concern to me?

I also want to own my original content. Even if Blizzard doesn't have exclusive rights to my work, I'm not ok with Blizzard "stealing it and running away with it." What does that mean anyway? Could they make derivative works from it? Right now, could Blizzard make a stand alone "DotA 2" without any permission given from Eul or Icefrog? Let's assume that DotA was completely original content and didn't borrow from the Warcraft Universe, how about then? I'm not asking if the wording in the EULA technically gives them this right, I'm asking if it should be a concern that Blizzard actually might consider it if they thought they'd make some money off of it.

posted a message on wireframe casting

When Blizzard revamped the system they should have kept the old system and given mappers/modders the option to choose which system they want via a nifty little checkbox! Easy-peasy, amirite?! I think Blizzard hates me personally.

posted a message on [Melee] Balanced asymmetric map design

There can definitely be balance in asymmetry. In fact asymmetry is precisely what makes race selection so fun: all the races are balanced yet they play very differently from eachother. The problem with assymetrical maps however is the lack of choice on the player's part. Especially if their start location is random. And even if it isn't random player 2 can't pick the same start location as player 1.

It might be balanced to say, give 1 person the the high ground advantage and another person additional resources at their main, but if the player doesn't get to choose which they prefer (as they do with race) then it's very easy for them to claim that the map was unfair.

Of course there's all sorts of different things you can do if you make the map UMS instead of melee. You could have a two round match where the players swap start locations after the first map for instance. (or, if it's even possible, it'd be interesting to have some sort of map where each player gets to choose what "their half of the map" looks like - I'm not sure you can change cliff height on the fly tho...)

Basically I think it's the lack of choice moreso than balance that posses a problem with asymmetrical maps (assuming you plan on making a melee map). There's certainly a niche that would enjoy that kind of map, probably the same niche that enjoys playing random over any specific race, and I'm all for thinking creatively and outside the box, and want to encourage you to experiment with map creation. :)

posted a message on wireframe casting

Sorry if this has been asked before but I didn't find anything when I did a forum search. Does anybody know if it's possible to have wireframe casting in UMS? Wireframe casting allows a spell-caster to cast a spell on a unit by clicking on their wireframe icon in the UI instead of the model on the battlefield. Apparently Blizzard took wireframe casting out of SC2 in an earlier patch, but I was wondering if it was still possible in the galaxy editor.

I tried searching through the data editor for something that looked like it might turn wireframe casting on or off. I looked over the list of ability flags here: http://www.sc2mapster.com/api-docs/constants/ability-flag/, but nothing seemed to stick out as enabling or disabling wireframe casting. I also tried to find some place similar to WC3's Modify Gameplay Constants. I'm not super familiar with the galaxy editor yet so I'm hoping I'm just looking in the wrong place. I'm aware that I could probably create a completely custom GUI to get wireframe casting working but obviously it would just be so much easier if there was a checkbox somewhere that I could click. :)
