posted a message on Woman Driving: Is she doing it right?

Whoa wtf this video is crazy lol. The motorcyclist looked like a douche regardless, but she had no right doing that (even if he started the physical vehicle contact).

Also, was he choking her or something when he went to her car near the end? I don't get it. Also the camera has a really weird zoom.

Side note: It can get pretty angering even driving here in Vancouver. People going slow in the left lane, in la-la land etc... in Europe it's better imo because people understand the rules.

By the way, I can understand Alevice's attitude based on the first page posts... it did kind of come off worse than you guys probably intended... but Alevice, don't take those posts too seriously, everyone's just joking ;)

posted a message on Diablo III Release Date Annouced
    Quote from ProzaicMuze: Go

Having played the D3 beta since the beginning, I've gotta say the game really isn't ready for release based on what they've shown us. There is a distinct lack of polish across all aspects of the game. The only exception being the environments which outshine the player/monster models. A telling sign being that they spent more time removing innovative features than they did refining the remaining features.

While I will inevitably receive D3 due to the annual pass, I honestly think Torchlight 2 is going to be more enjoyable to play than D3.

I would have preferred if they took another half a year getting it right than releasing it to a horde of careless, rabid fans. This is a time where "until it's finished" really would do the game a service.

I have not been in the beta since the beginning, but I still find myself agreeing with you. But not for all of the same reasons. Mine pertain to Bnet and the recent skills UI mostly, which both have been almost unanimously criticized.

What's really improved though is the difficulty, loot explosions, and AH interface.

    Quote:

The concept of white items as being "loot confetti"

Personally, not a huge issue for me. But white items have become really annoying now since they have no use and get in the way of picking up good stuff. My final point for this is that in D2 I had enough MF that at higher levels almost every drop is blue or greater.

    Quote:

The awkward UI (has become progressively worse)

    Agreed.

    Quote:

The change of runes from well polished orbs to tacky looking marble-esque stones (that you can see the white cutout borders of)

I agree, the art change was strange.

    Quote:

The change of the entire skill system from one that was compact and intuitive to a mess of tabs

Totally agree. Just look at the Wizard as an example. The groupings are now completely arbitrary and make you waste time just to look at and browse for skills.

    Quote:

The change of stat and weapon based abilities to pure weapon based abilities (2-Handed weapons on Wizards. . .huh?)

I agree about it being weird in some cases, but I think because of the +intellect stats or w/e else on wands (not to mention that wands have about the same dps as comparable axes/swords etc), it will still be more worth it to use your standard weapon-types. I also think it's really cool that casters now scale with weapon-damage like meleers do, so they can't just stack 180MF on a crappy gemmable weapon.

    Quote:

The removal of auto-attack as a viable alternative (why have auto-attack at all if they don't want us to use it?

I think this issue goes more into the new resource systems. The classes almost never have to wait anymore, as you had to in D2 and WoW with typical mana systems. Everyone can now just use their spells all of the time, thus negating most needs for auto attack.

    Quote:

The odd decision to not use normal maps on models (player models look like D2 and GW models)

    Not huge for me.

I miss named games too; while right now we can join games fast (and fill quest runs fast), I feel like the current join game system is JUST like the popularity system in so many ways lol. I mean, in release when there'll be X amount of quests, I have to imagine it might be hard to fill games some times... whereas in D2, you could browse the current 'named' games, so it funneled people together. Not only that, it also gave us the ability to run whatever we wanted, or host 'free items' games etc... right now you're pretty much just bottle-necked into quests.

At least we got *some* form of public chat to group up with people that way too :/

Edit: Also, regarding casualizing the game... it might just be a by-product of their current WoW mentality. As Rob Pardo said somewhere, their initial hardcore fans played WoW for the first few years and many have moved on, so they had to cater to a different audience that grew in the later years of WoW. But with D3, I personally think a lot of the more hardcore gamers will be coming back to Blizz (ie myself). Regardless, Diablo 3 still fits the 'easy to learn, difficult to master' mantra imo... I'm quite happy with the gameplay itself so far!

Agreed, let's see how this pans out, but it's GREAT they fully recognize Bnet and custom map issues and are working on improving it in ways that we and them both think should/would work. This is sweet!

posted a message on (Solved) Missiles That keep going

Hey I missed this thread; good to see my video linked, but it isn't truly what sunblazer00 needed... infact I think you should completely scrap w/e my tutorial did haha.

I think the basic chain you need here is an ability that launches a missile where in turn that missile (unit) has a behavior on it that periodically searches around itself and deals damage if it found any nearby units. Then you will also need the missile to travel past the target point, which I believe is related to its mover, along what DrsuperEvil said 2 posts ago. I'm no mover expert so I can't comment on that.

So perhaps start with the yamato cannon ability again, except make a behavior that does a periodic search effect (forever) for enemies within a small radius, and that search effect applies a damage effect. Give this behavior to the yamato cannon missile unit. At this point it'll be damaging as it travels, but it won't be travelling forever, so you'll have to figure out the mover part to do that. Let me see if I can get Prozaic to post here.

News: Chat channels are coming in Diablo 3... Bashiok:

    Quote:

Soooooo... hey everyone. How's it going? Good? Weather ok? Great... so, right... You know how sometimes you say something that's stupid and wrong and then people very reasonably get upset and create a lot of threads and discussions and demands with some pretty reasonable reasons for the thing you said wouldn't happen but then it turns out that you're stupid and wrong and the things you said are completely the opposite of what's actually true?

Yeah. So that happened. Public chat channels

    will

be in Diablo III, barring any catastrophe that requires we remove them, because they're already implemented. In fact they'll be in an upcoming beta patch so you'll get to see and play around with them yourselves.

I'm not sure I can offer any explanation as to the incorrectness of my statements, except that I believed them to be correct when I made them. I apologize, and I'll strive to not be stupid and wrong in the future.

More info on the chat feature, and others, to come in the weeks ahead. Thanks for sticking with it, and me.

    Quote from EternalWraith: Go

    @ProzaicMuze: Go

    1. No. Take someone who has never played wc3 and sc2 and have them compare both interfaces. Starcraft 2 is better. The interface on Wc3 does not feel more modern. This may be a point of opinion, but millions of Starcraft 2 players love this over Wc3. Maybe start a poll on TL or something, but ,yea. Im pretty certain

2.Less is not always a bad thing. Especially if its only for simplicity. Now, again, If someone never played Wc3, they wouldn`t have these thoughts or care whatsoever about missing functionality they do not need. The missing functionality itself is few for players(`clans`, `chat commands` etc, Nothing critical or core).

Its obvious that mappers(and some players) from Wc3 have the biggest problem with B.net 2.0 and have greater preference with B.net 1.0. Its mostly the mappers though.

However, from a USER standpoint, the new system is much more visually better and it does what it needs to do. Simple as that.

The company obviously spent a lot of money on research and development of the interface, with top developers leading it. Its impossible to say Wc3 interface functions/looks better. I cant fathom why anyone would think that. Just impossible.

This is like the Myspace vs Facebook argument. The former had more functionality(You could add music on your page, change its color and all sorts of crazy stuff), but it looked kinda ugly(like the Wc3 chains up/down/up interface). Then Facebook comes in, very SIMPLISTIC, clean and functional only to whats needed(no extra frills etc) and it smashes and destroys Myspace. Simplicity for the masses.

Part of the reason Starcraft 2 is so successful and has a higher retention ratio of players(compared to other strategy games, and their life cycles) is because the interface is great. Maybe not perfect, but far better than Warcraft 3 and other strategy games.

@Everyone I watched the video. Nothing special. Talking about clans, chatrooms, and tournaments etc. I thought it was way more deeper and insightful into the technical nature of how B.net 1.0 is superior(as some of you guys in this thread have made it out to be), but Husky just mentions some of the stuff he likes/missed in Wc3 B.net. Thats hardly a cause for anti-b.net 2.0 celebration.

    1. My recommendation would be don't suggest TL to support your argument lol. Right now there's a 40 or 50 page thread supporting prozaic and the rest of us :/

    2. True, and that player has probably already quit playing because subconsciously the lack of social features (and custom game system) caused it.

    3. Did they spent a lot on the interface design? Prozaic do you know on this matter?

    4. Can you provide a statistic or evidence of the retention thing? I'm genuinely interested to know how much more players have stayed playing SC2 vs other Blizz RTS's over a period of X time.

Overall I see your arguments, and I guess we'll just have to disagree on bnet 2.0. Most of the reason people are fired up is because a lot of time has passed, and the same thing is happening with D3 now. Husky's vid reminded me of the whole design and the features that I missed.
