If you create a dialog item A in dialog B, and make a new dialog C, how do you change A's parent dialog from B to C?

posted a message on Showing projected attack range

RileyStarcraft is correct, but he assumes you know how to find these things. My attached screenshots may help.

Notes on each of the screenshots (these are NOT directions - refer to Riley's post earlier in the thread for that):

    1. click on event-events+ and make these new events
    2. create a placement-actor
    3. create a range-weapon actor
    4. find the tower's actor and link the placement-actor

Things I changed are colored pink.

posted a message on Blizzard's letter about Nexus Word Wars

@RodrigoAlves: Go One thing you can try - see if you can find a list of "vulgar words" on the internet that contains all of their examples. Then filter through that.

They are probably not giving you a full word list because either they don't actually have one (they ban whatever maps people complain about), or they do have a list, but a dynamic one. I would pose the following question in response:

"Given a project of this scale, what resources would you recommend for determining appropriateness? Why wouldn't you be able to provide a list of banned words? There was a similar case with Apple and the App Store banning an app unintentionally containing profanity about a year ago - and it was successfully resolved by Apple providing a concrete list of words that the app developer would be able to remove and resubmit. I don't see why that wouldn't work out for both parties in this case as well."

The case study is important because it sets a behavioral precedent from a successful company that does what Blizzard is trying to do. Hey if it works, great. If it doesn't, you gave it your best shot. I honestly don't think 33k manual word review is worth anyone's time or effort, at some point you have to value your time and peace of mind. Good luck

Intro - if you're on NA and can spare time to make a short video of the gameplay of Azala's Auction D, I'd appreciate it. I've been looking for someone to record for over a month, but I only recently found this thread.

    Thanks,

posted a message on How to get good testers for your custom map, anytime you want

NOTE: If this is posted in the wrong place, move it where it should be.

NOTE 2: Yes, there is a tester list. It has maybe 50 people on it, which is not large enough to ensure there are enough of them online, not afk or in a game, and willing to try something new when you absolutely need a tester. People on the list are only slightly more likely to want to try your map than a random person, anyway.

    Preparation

You need a semi-playable map and the mentality of a spammer.

    Steps

    1. Find a very popular map (with many player slots) that closely matches your map's genre, and join it.
    2. Add everyone in the game as a friend and leave. Repeat until you have about 40 friends online.
    3. Find someone on your friend list who is online, not away/busy, and not in a game. If there isn't anyone, wait a bit. This is why you did step 2.
    4. Send him a quick message, like "wanna try a new d map?" Expect about a 25% success rate.
    - If he doesn't reply within about a minute, or isn't interested, kick him off the list.
    - If he does reply, and says "yes," immediately create a new instance of your map and invite him. Repeat from step 3 until you get the number of people you want (but don't wait too long, people tend to leave after a while)
    - If he does reply, and says "who are you," just say you met him in (very popular map name) a while ago, and ask him again.
    5. After you start the game, keep notes on the players who liked the map (using the Friend Note option in the friend list).

    Other

    - Eventually you will hit the friend list limit (around 100). When that happens, and you need to add people, just get rid of anyone you don't have notes on.
    - After doing this, your friend list will be heavily biased by timezone. So it's helpful if you test at roughly the same time of day, rather than having to rebuild your list.

posted a message on Nexus Word Wars was banned

    @RodrigoAlves: Go
    A possible plan of action:

Ask them for a list of banned words that appear in the map, or a global banned words list. One of three things will happen:

    1. They reply and give it to you - great. Once you removed those words, follow up with them and tell them you removed them, and request an unban (with popularity if possible). Also post the list here for everyone's benefit.

    2. They reply and don't give it to you - not as great. Tell them you removed the word "dyke", but give the perfectly reasonable argument that without them providing such a list you can't expect to check 32,000 words and it is possible someone will complain about some word again. Mention that you yourself did not know what "dyke" meant. Post their reply to the followup here.

    3. They don't reply - terrible. I really hope this doesn't happen, because then you (and everyone who liked the map, and makers of any dictionary-dependent map) are really out of luck.

posted a message on [OT] Azala's Auction D (suggestions welcome)

Now that it hit page 1 of the new games list and is relatively bug-free, it's a good time to ask for feedback.

For those who don't know, it's a tower D game where you bid against other players in auctions for better towers.

    Here's the project page: http://www.sc2mapster.com/maps/azalas-auction-defense/
I don't have a video because video capture software won't produce decent output with my barely-SC2-playable specs.
If you like the game and can make one (5 minutes or so will do) that would be awesome!

posted a message on Do map makers play their maps?

    @Keyeszx: Go

Depends on the type of game.
Puzzle game, no, because there's no challenge for the creator.
Twitch reaction game, yes, typically you have to be really good at it to balance it, and you can't exhaust the content by playing it too much.
    Everything else, somewhere in between.

    14. That's exactly what I was hoping to avoid. Oh well :/
    13. No idea, I didn't ask this one. I'll mark it solved.
    12. Neither method works. In both cases the tips end up as the usual randomized ones.
    11. Magically solved itself at some point in the last few weeks. No idea why.
    10. Coloring "<3" was what I tried to do. Except it came out "<3</c>" and colored.
    8. Forgot to take this out, it was answered before.
    7. Damn. :/
    6. It seems the data editor has a litany of fields related to sound playback...nice :)
    5. Yep, that's what I had. Oh well :/
    3. Damn. :/

posted a message on Tired of hackers.

    @RodrigoAlves: Go

    2 questions:

    1. How do you implement the global alltime top scores? The best way I know how with data banks would be with a viral method - each player has data values corresponding to 1st 2nd 3rd (names and points), and you take the max of them prior to the game and save it to everyone, and also check after every score change in the current game. Doesn't really work for newbies or not-well-connected players, though.

    2. Suppose I had a memory editor program like Cheat Engine (http://www.cheatengine.org/aboutce.php) that would be able to locate critical variables directly by successive filtering (e.g. variables that increased since the last scan) and a little guesswork, and then modify them. It's obvious that data bank read/write encryption and anything to do with the SC2 editor names don't really do any good against such an attack. What do you have that guards against this? I only remember because in SC1 someone did it to my map. Fortunately I was only hiding 1 small integer value, so I just broke it into bits at the end of the trigger cycle, and reassembled it at the beginning of the next one. The trigger cycle time was very small against the memory editor's scan time, so the memory editor would detect a lot of ones and zeroes changing (which are ubiquitous anyway and not very helpful).
