If you have any specific questions, I'll answer them, but as a whole the map file is closed and controlled.

Sounds cause lots and lots of network lag when played via triggers. Don't know if it still happens in 1.4.

That clause refers to hacking via reading memory addresses or cache files. I doubt they'd give you even a warning for using some extra bank security tools.

I feel glad, now, that there were no programming or IT classes (except for 2d graphic design and 3d animation and digital media classes) at my high school.

Set a global boolean variable to true and check to see if it's still false, so it only runs once.

    A few things to note:

    1. Mille is reliable if I give him advance notice. Getting EU synced up will not be an issue.

    2. Everyone will start with 1000 points on the MotW version and the point rate will be increased by 5x (175 points for a SK win lol), but it won't carry over to the main map.

    3. People who join the main map during this time will get a one-time bonus of +10% points (if you're at 4000, that's +400 points).

    4. I will not upload MotW.

    5. The script limit is near but not immediate; I can make minor additions and small changes for a while by phasing out some variants like F11 and Classic (like I did with DR's Choice). I can't add any major features or new roles, though.

Mille proved that all of the input methods (data abilities, triggered keyboard events, triggered mouse events) lag exactly the same. There is absolutely no difference between them in terms of speed, but obviously the triggered ones are easier to deal with if you know programming.

No reason to disallow changing the control scheme; let the player choose.

All the CS and IT stuff at most universities is easy to a modder who has done that stuff for years. I can do all the assignments for all the lower-division programming courses at my university in one or two days, total.

This is not meant to include your own time spent on the map. Mapmaking is a time liability but it's misleading to assume each hour of mapmaking is $15-$25 of lost wages.

Triggered sound effects cause massive amounts of lag for some insane reason. If you have a lot of them, remove them.

posted a message on Net Costs/Gains of StarCraft II Modding

Since the marketplace is coming up next year, I got curious about how much people are spending and making on free SC2 maps.

Add together all the costs directly related with the production, distribution, and maintaining of your SC2 maps. Include website costs, development costs, salaries/commissions, equipment, donation money, advertisement money (website ads and in-game ads), and other investments and income. Do not include the cost of your computer or software, unless there are components you bought specifically for creating the SC2 map, but DO include the costs of programs you purchased specifically for making the map, such as Photoshop, 3D Studio Max, StarCraft II itself (only if you bought it more than once), etc. Divide the costs for some of these items at your discretion if you bought them for multiple projects, only one of which was a SC2 map.

Also, do NOT include your time spent mapmaking in this estimate. If people converted their time spent making the map into monetary liability, we'd all be below -$500.

There is an anonymous poll, but if you'd like, you can post here with your net gain/loss and how many hours/hits your map gets on the battle.net servers.

posted a message on Resolutions Played

You can always optimize the interface to be better, more fleshed-out, etc. on widescreen formats such at 16:10 and 16:9, but every mapmaker MUST keep it compatible with 4:3.

Also, a 64x64 size icon in Starcraft 2 is 64p x 64p on-screen at 1600x1200, 1920x1200, or any other resolution with 1200 as its vertical height. At smaller resolutions, the icon is scaled down, and at larger resolutions the icon is scaled up. For this reason, you've got to have the icon source at a resolution at least equal to the dialog size you're using in the editor. It's also worth, if you can, using art with a resolution 1.5x higher, to make sure that people with even higher resolutions don't get a blurry interface.

Most people don't have a vertical resolution above 1200 though, so it's generally safe to keep at a 1:1 ratio with source art resolution to in-game dialog size. Also, you can deal with widescreen art differently by setting the game interface to scale to the horizontal resolution instead of the vertical resolution if you so desire (map options setting, iirc), but this is dangerous on super wide screens.

@Mille25: Go Means they cant find a good way of making profit with the marketplace so theyre not working hard on it. =P

You'd think the "Take a % of all proceeds" plan would be a really fast way to solve that problem.
