posted a message on StarCraft 2 Marketplace Still Coming, Says Blizzard
    Quote from Vexal: Go

    This is terrible news.

A market place will serve no purpose other than to turn the map list into the infestation of worthless shit that is the iPhone app store.

Ehhhhh, i wouldn't say that. Bear in mind communities surrounding products vary wildly. Apple stores cater to people who like to buy anything shiny so quality of the product reflects this. Though there are certainly people who would buy anything blizzard as evident by any blizzard related forum you go to, they have had the highest quality standard of any game company in history, barring the recent release of the beta blizzard custom maps of course, HAR HAR.

posted a message on StarCraft 2 Marketplace Still Coming, Says Blizzard

All this shows is 2 of the top guys at blizzard would like to see it happen. It's great to see and after watching the blizzard 20 year video i have lots of respect for these 2, but I can't help but think things are too far gone at this point.

The only way i could see a marketplace actually happening is if they somehow integrate the Unity engine into the marketplace or something similar. Bring tangible outside developers into the fold without forcing the galaxy editor on them (sorta like steam supports valve and other devs).

The galaxy editor (barring SIGNIFICANT additions, and i mean YEARS worth of usability and functionality additions), against all the well wishes of the fanboys in this forum, can't compete as a global gaming engine for delivering for-pay quality content. So in years time, we MIGHT see the start of true tangible marketplace game production, so add many more months onto that until great games are hitting the marketplace with the galaxy editor.

Said it before i'll say it again, it's a damned tragedy what happened to this community.

posted a message on What are your favorite maps? Why?

Poker defense. Poker's fun and combining it with some SC2 gameplay is pretty awesome. It's one of the few maps that breaks the barrier of RTS gameplay and maintains a decent level of fun.

Unfortunately the late game gets a bit imbalanced and it feels like you're just going through the motions, the thrill of betting huge pots and having lots of hte line is absent from the game.

By all means check out my mod Cosmic Eclipse! It has a ton of the systems you want to implement, although i use spacebar for "boosting" depending on which direction you're moving or strafing as well as multiple weapon types (1-3) selects weapons

It even has custom art assets and animations that almost no SC2 mod has (which you are free to take and use for whatever)

    Cosmic Eclipse Download Link

Take it apart and take whatever you want from it, or steal the whole thing and build on it, i honestly have almost no interest of going back to it at this point and i would love to see it make some kind of impact on the custom games community.

Edit: I know it's a bit advanced, but if you have any questions i can help with just about everything outside of the UI, my buddy handeled that part of the mod.

Well that's a bummer, hopefully they do this soon. Maybe PR decided it'd be less damaging to brush this under the rug :P

posted a message on Is level designer a bad choice for a major in college?

Level design is one of those things you can 100% do better and Cheaper (free) outside of college.

It's also incredibly hard to get a job as a level designer at this point without prior experience. Your best bet at a job is find the hottest game out now with the best mod tools and hit it hard. If you make a popular map you may score a job.

posted a message on Pokemon Yellow, general help?

This is the sort of map the SC2 engine 100% cannot run in a high quality manner. But if you really want to make it have fun.

Why not make this sort of game in flash?

posted a message on A genre too common and a genre too rare.

I almost want to say tower defenses. There's a lot of potential in this engine for some really unique groundbreaking gameplay that no one's really tapped.

I actually really enjoyed poker defense. I think if that game were a bit more polished and refined it could be a great map, add a betting system. At the start of each round you gotta choose which units to bet adding a ton of stratagy and each could have a numeric value. If players are able to choose what sort of wave to send it adds even more stratagey to betting and balancing killing of enemy waves. Big pots could give super awesome units to the winner and possibly multiplied by the strength of the winning hand.

You could even sprinkle in some rodrigo and have a topic of conversatoin for the random players to discuss each hand or something like that.

At the end of the game players vote for the best socializer so you can have 2 winners, i think that'd pair well with anonymous poker sessions.

You know, this website isn't exactly poppin' these days, a lot could be done to bring more people into the fold. A "hello reddit" for either one of these "big" (relatively speaking of course) news stories would do a lot to build community.

Feels like the pointless fanboy clashings in here are having an adverse affect on the website and map making community overall if you wont run with a good story when it pops up, they're not exactly common these days.

Here's an image for you: http://sc-reborn.com/images/starcraft-logo.jpg

posted a message on Education, Gamedev. University vs Advanced Vocational Education

I would recommend joining a mod team and just hang around communities such as these and find a project you can work on passionately at some level of your choosing. Grow at your own pace without worrying about getting a bad teacher, or having to take courses that don't interest you and save a TON of money.

The vast majority of people who work in the gaming industry are self taught and a degree continues to be worth less by the day (many would argue that the cost of a modern education will actually lower the quality of your life and make you a slave to loans for years without adding much to your job finding power).

Unity is a great engine to pick up and learn on, lots of game companies are using it. Same with UDK but it's a bit harder to jump into on a game design level. Flash is also a great starting tool for someone without a huge team or funds just starting out.

There are many options out there, free, that you can use to build a portfolio that you can use to start applying to game companies with. Just keep your ears open as you figure out what it is exactly you want to do (work for a giant studio, work on a small indie team, what genera of game?) and steer your learning in that direction.

There's a lot of competition out there, unless you know someone or know how to shmooze it's a long hard road and you're likely going to have to put together something pretty special to turn heads. But then again you just never know, maybe you just apply to the right place at the right time.

Whatever happens just know there are no gaurantees but there are worse career paths to persue than this. It's gaming after all!
