    posted a message on WTF Is... : Blizzard Arcade ? (TotalBiscuit)

    As someone adamantly defensive of creators and their ability to get their content to the masses without massive greedy companies getting in the way, TB, I'm very surprised you're being so positive towards the blizzard arcade. But hey I can understand how having close ties can cloud one's judgement.

    I know this is fan boy territory, but this is the truth: Blizzard has shat all over the map making community and destroyed their custom game scene for reasons ranging from destructive predatory ownership of their properties, and most importantly just an overall indifference for all content outside of their own. It appears someone high on the food chain woke up recently and decided, "Hmmm, lets stop shitting in our fans mouths today and make some sappy bullshit videos depicting how much we care about them and maybe we can score some free content and some underpriced human capital. Pull one of our tools off of reddit to make the video.".

    To sum it up, they're so obsessed with sucking their own dicks, they don't realize how shit their own content has been and how destructive their indifference to the custom game scene is. I invite all of you to play Left 2 Die, star jeweled and dear lord Auir Chef. I know most gamers don't "get" the games industry, and to be fair it's shrouded in secrecy and there's no reason to try to understand it. Ignorance is bliss and all. But it's pretty obvious the starcraft team are a group of people of moderate talent who really could give a shit if the game exceeds any sorts of expectations. Why create an acceptable custom game scene if all you need to do to keep your job is smile and nod and create a semi passable game?

    The real story here happened years ago, when there were many talented custom game makers interested in blizzard's empty promises to make this a worthwhile scene. They squandered that... HARD. And no one noticed.

    Now they're doing this sub par shit? Too little too late. SC2 will and will always remain a niche title unless we hear a major news story about a major restructuring on the starcraft 2 dev team. I suppose decent things can be done in the starcraft 2 arcade... but if you're a competent developer with half a brain, you'll pursue opportunities elsewhere.

    edit: saying what needs to be said whether any of you tool mother fuckers want me to say it or not.

    With my dwindling expectations of blizzard? Pretty much this. I'm happy either way, sooner blizzard crashes and burns the more room there is for game developers with a passion for making good games.

    This is exactly the point. Blizzard Dota is a reflection of the utter failure of the mod community as a whole, why i felt compelled to post here after all this time. This game was the last hope for this community in my opinion.

    As for what we know of titan (according to Blizzard): It has massive broad appeal, it's been playable for a while now and everyone seems to be enjoying it, it's a brand new IP. It's an MMO.

    Don't get me wrong, i'm a bit excited for the new starcraft expansion, the new units look pretty friggin amazing, some great design descisions to address core issues with hte current game, namely more exciting air combat and less macro required by zerg (if new unit allows for easy spawning of mass units).

    As a former mapper, it doesn't seem like they're taking the custom games to new heights as we were hoping though. But at this point I'm just beating a dead horse.

    Blizzard dota video:

    Worse than even I was expecting. Oh man wtf is blizzard even thinking? Valve is going to mop the floor with them with a vanilla port of dota.

    As much as I was waiting for valve to knock it out of the park... they didn't, same old crap. Just going after the easy bucks in the hardcore community taking no gamble on new gameplay whatsoever. Same gripe i had with SC 2.

    Very disappointing.

    This modern era of games is driving me crazy. You could have never gotten away with a graphical face lift and calling a game a sequel 10 years ago.

    For me the game just feels static at top levels. For all the leveling and itemization, at the end of the day there is an ideal way to play and the element of choice disappears. Randomization of items and even having item drops could spice up the gameplay IMO.

    I see only one thing Blizzard can do: Invent time machine travel back to 1999 trademark Counter-Strike when it was still a Half-Life mod trademark Team Fortress when it was still a Quake mod

    Let's see how Valve likes that :P

    Note to Blizzard: remember to have enough plutonium for the trip back to the present.

    Luls, i think blizzard would be better off to live in the past, you know, before they sold their souls for whore money.

    HON, Dota 2, LOL. Multiple multi million dollar studios have popped up due to DOTA. While those are the big titles to spawn from here, there are literally thousands of small flash games that have been influence by the custom games of warcraft, notably tower defenses. Ever play plants vs zombies?

    @D1000

    AoS refers to Aeoin of Srife, often considered the grandfather of the hero vs hero genera, not the genera itself but the game that put groups of heroes on each side and had them fighter across sides.

    @Prozaic

    You presume a lot. I think at this point the idea that blizzard would want ANYTHING public domain is a bit absurd. Blizzard are absolute control freaks. If you look at their history they are unable to work with anyone, including blizzard north. They have lost huge amounts of their human capital and influence in the pursuit of controlling everything themselves.

    Just look at Diablo 3 or Starcraft 2. They leave nothing in anyone's hands but their own and this is likely why DOTA didn't end up in their hands. Who wants to give their IP to a company that controls everything and monetizes purely for their own interest?

    No, it'd be more like trying to trademark a name like "League of Legends" a specific game within the Hero Arena Genera. Defense of the Ancients was a mod popularized among many, many competing Hero Arenas. But it's just a name, the name represents the quality of the team of people who created said mod that used the same art and game assets that all their competition used.

    What we are largely oblivious to as bystanders are the people behind these mods. Some of them went off to form Riot and some of them stayed on DOTA, to this day it live on the warcraft 3 servers keeping that game alive and supplying blizzard with extra revenue. Specifically "icefrog" i believe is considered the "main guy" behind the DOTA brand. It's all shrouded in secrecy but at the end of the day the obvious conclusion is that blizzard isn't as hip on sharing with outside mod developers as Valve is.

    More likely this will tie into blizzard dota directly, not fan made content.
