Sorry, but the customer is never right. This is a horrible saying that couldn't be farther from the truth. The rest of your post is just opinion so I don't care to argue those points with you. You aren't bringing up fact, you're just complaining in general.

If the customer is never right, then LoL was a bad move by riot and HoN was a mistake. The customer is always right, note that its a singular term used in context to the general customer, the consumers. Knowing what the customer wants is one thing the customer may not even know. But, you're pretty damn dumb if you think otherwise.

As well, I think it would have been a blunder of Blizz to make a full DOTA game. Blizz's projects are usually huge in scope and genre-defining. DOTA is a custom game let's remember that. It's being turned into full products but it probably would not be good enough for Blizz.

I think people want it a full game now though, customers are always right, and illogical.

We will see with Blizzard DotA. Its early trials failed pretty hard and they had to redesign it. Blizzard hasn't made a good game since WoW. WC3 didn't last as long as SC and D2. D3 looks bad, so does HotS. WoW is losing alot of customers too. One could say Blizzard is on a steep decline.

There are also alot of just as good if not better DotA style maps on Bnet right now. There also is a DotA port from last time I was on Bnet I saw it. That was months ago though. Popularity won't ever make them played though. I mean if you look at it, sotis is so bad, that it will make people leave bnet for other Dota style games.

True the Texture Select By Id event action is a good way to text various existing textures for inspiration.

I know Evil, I was the one that showed you how at the Hiveworkshop, I also figured out a way to switch to null material. Remember you wanted a cloak that uses the terrain like doodads. Haven't tested it though since I haven't opened the editor in months.

Also, I can just drop textures into 3ds max for renders, don't need switch textures in game for inspiration.

As much as I am not a fan of DOTA-style games, if they had at least made something fresh or innovative I might be more interested. I guess they're just going the safe route and trying to tap into a market.

Well, speaking of Valve, the last game I bought from them was L4D and I didn't play it for very long. L4D2 was a no-buy and this might be too. Yet, Hl2/cs:s, portal, tf2, were all my purchases before that and those were AMAZING.

Its not a matter of going the safe route. Valve's whole goal was to port DotA onto source, taking it away from WC3 and Blizzard whom basically shitted on the Icefrog for years.

Here is basically the short version of the private shitstorm between Blizz and Ice. I was very much involved in the DotA community back then, have had conversations with Icefrog many times. There was a real problem with bots, and this guy on the DotA team wrote some code to be implemented into Bnet to help combat bots. Blizzard basically told them to get fucked. This kind of shit going back and forth for years between Icefrog and Blizzard. The real big kicker was when Icefrog actually spent his time to goto Blizzard... The whole time Icefrog was making DotA he was going to college to learn to become an actual game designer. After finishing school it was time to get a job, so he went to Blizzard. They basically laughed at him in his face when he said he wanted to make DotA as a separate game, while making fun of him, and ended the interview early by kicking him out like their holier than thou. Ice never really talked to the public with the kind of crap Blizzard dished out at him. I can't imagine how he felt, since his whole life is basically focused zealously on DotA, and he got his dream crushed by Blizzard. Lucky for him, almost all major gaming companies wanted to higher him, and he could choose where he wanted to go. Valve actually made the best offer and freedom to Icefrog, thus Icefrog makes ALL the rules when it came to making this game. I think it turned out great for him, and is actually a good thing Blizzard did not higher him. Blizzard doesn't deserve him or that community.

Funny thing is, if Icefrog did decide to go public to tarnish Blizzard's image. They probably would of done something to help him. Blizzard is filth, horrible people.

That is why DotA2 is the way it is, because Icefrog wanted it this way. It wasn't Valve's choice or Gabe's choice. Icefrog does whatever he wants, and the dude is possessed when it comes to making DotA full scale game. Now his dream is coming true. It will be interesting how far he takes DotA with a fire like that.

Also, DotA will most likely become free in a year or two.

I had about 4,000 DotA games under my belt back in 2007. I've laned against Merlin before several times, and counter pub stomped col with my farmed BH, arguably the best DotA team there ever was

Next Valve should make a WoW clone and crush Blizzard, they don't deserve modders like the people here.

If your map is genuinely good and fun with enough content to keep it rising; 100%.

You have to find players to even play the map first. You could be the best modder in the world ever and never rise at all.

If you can't make a viral video, or find someone to do it for you. No chance, end of story. Stop filling peoples heads with false hope, unless you truly have no doubt that individual has the skills to achieve what they're asking. This kind of cultist blind optimism needs to stop, it doesn't work like that in reality.

Given the little information hes given, I say, no he has no chance ever.

You might actually say something to take months off this persons life. For what? Don't you feel any empathy for what you might do to this person?

The fact that getting a kill not only cripples the opposing team for a set amount of time but also increases the speed with which your hero techs makes especially high-end games usually very stale. It's like two players are lying in a swimming pool, and whoever pushes his opponent down first wins, because he also pushes himself up and it simply becomes downright impossible for the 'drowning' player to make a comeback. Professional-level LoL games basically have this 'feature' where if every person on one team misclicks once, they've basically lost. Imagine you'd lose your SC match due to one misclick - this happens in some matchups (where drops or unit positioning is complete key for one player), but it's extremely rare in SC, especially when compared to DOTA games.

I think I can safely say that the AoS 2 project we're working on has improved upon both these concepts, which is why I've got good hopes for it and think it'll be deserving of its name.

Don't think you know what you're talking about. Kills do not add as much gpm as laning does. And, even so, only certain player kills matter at all. A support role death means nothing after wards are bought. A carry role death can mean alot, but most carries do not really start item farming gold until mid game.

The only time kills really matter is when the game is in pushing phase. Wasting an ultimate ability can be considered just as good as a death at this point. The reason DotA was considered so balanced is because pretty much all vital things in the game were like pin needles for the other team until the pushing phase. Kills, creeps, leveling, farming. Which is why the game takes 45 minutes plus to complete. The game is like a 45 minute arm wrestling match without much strength disparity, that goes back an forth. If a player would dominate the entire game, then of course the game would end early. But, a couple kills changed hardly anything.

Don't even need to code a traceline. Just make a highlight system using the centered mouse, which is just as good if not better for the sc2 engine.

Then use 2d UI for muzzle fire and the weapon.

After seeing the D3 hunter trailer... I think my decision was made nearly instantly for myself but...

Btw, if you ever played Diablo2:Hell Unleashed you will gain a new respect for the mechanics of D2. Its like D2 hard mode, its very entertaining from a modders perspective. The UI and mechanics of D2 made that game playable for ages. After watching some area play for D3, its going to be nothing like the mechanics of D2.

Mozzared, you're extremely naive if you believe the pop system is anywhere near capital. Capital systems deny monopolies when not corrupt. The front page is monopolized.

Anyway, I really hate when people say, be constructive to Blizzard. Especially, when its the Blizzard moderation staff on their forums... You're basically telling to waste their time and energy, unnecessarily. It takes more than mountain to change anything in Blizzard, D3 Art direction, real ID, for example.

People grew up on Blizzard and they have every right to be angry. They also have every right to be angry with a product they bought. My mother is old and bought some crab meat recently, it was rancid and she tried to eat it. I proceeded to take the meat to the store and ripped a new one in the manager there. I am not going to sit there and explain in essay format why I disliked the rancid crab meat my mother bought. I am going to tell that person that their store is filth and everyone I know not to buy from them. Which, is exactly how I am going to be with Blizzard, since I feel my money was taken unjustly. Blizzard has always done the bait and switch tactic, but, it went to far this time with "Bnet 2.0." I don't like being tricked.

If you found out companies could delete bad comments about their stores on google.com, how would that make you feel about buying from them knowing they did? You can actually buy reputation services for google.com to leave you tons of good comments about your store. This is similar to what Blizzard does. A bunch of people buy rancid crab meat, post a few comments about their store on google.com, then people know not to buy from them again. Blizzard filters everything they can, almost big brother scary to try and maintain a good reputation. Which, ultimately shows there are alot of problems with customer satisfaction and relations. Thank god for Amazon.com.

Look at amazon.com and read some of the reviews for SC2, next find an "objective" low rating review and I dare you to post it on their forums. Watch how fast Blizzard will remove it. Blizzard is a bunch of liars when they say they want constructive criticism, and liars if they say they listen to the community. They're not a morally correct company, and do not stand by their products 100%. They're afraid and have every right to be. If they were not they simply would allow the community to defend their products, but, since Blizzard products are not what they used to be, they're afraid and are resorting to mass censorship.

Now, head over to the CS:S forums, I guarantee you will see someone just as pissed of there as they are here. That is what happens, when people don't know how to find another game to be a fanboy for. Some people have played Blizzard games exclusively, and that might end with SC2. Hell, I've made sure I bought every Blizzard title since I played Rock N Roll racing. And, while sentimental to me, I realized I was just like you guys here, stuck in this shit hole. Yes, SC2 was suppose to be a huge exciting and defining moment in our gaming lives, guess what its wasn't, its shit, now move on. Valve, although did the same to the CS:S community as Blizzard did to its RTS community, will dominate very hard in this decade(their numbers already are), because they're adapting and growing with their communities. Something Blizzard refuses or doesn't know how to do.

Don't understand much about heightmaps. All I know is that in Quake you'd use them to make terrain, but in SC2 you can do your own terrain in the editor.

Heres the link Jack was talking about.

I just picked up 3ds max the other day. I've got no idea what I'm doing, beyond how to make squares/circles and move them around. Which tutorials did you follow?

Well, I've learned that alot of people use maya now, I don't have it yet. Its more UI friendly, while 3ds max is more technical. Just what I assume atm. But, I think I will stick to 3ds max for now.

My crash course consisted of some youtube videos, a bit of reading, and alot of just playing with tools.

Yesterday I found a really good tutorial on youtube, he literally goes through every step every detail to make his model. Its 50x10mintues long though, so if you have the time. He does it in Maya, but, 3ds max seems no different to me other than UI.

Also normal mapping seems to be the bread winner when it comes to modeling. Modeling is just creating a shape, mapping is what makes the model.

    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/36/Normal_map_example.png

I think what pros do is, build a super high poly model in something like zbrush. Take pictures of it somehow as a map. Then use that as detail for the diffuse, add the converted normal map. After you have the maps, bring the model down to low poly.

Correct me if I am wrong here...

58,000 hours of top 2 maps on US bnet

3,800 players in my region online. Probably around 4k static through out the day.

Lets say 96,000 total hours consumed by all played online, including idling.

That leaves 38,000 hours for ladder, idling and other games. 60% of the population on bnet is playing only the top 2 games without ever idling.
