@iHaveReturnd I loved the Wc3 Jurrasic Park survival maps. They were a mix of TD's and maybe RPG's. Just saying that there is hope.

Maybe its just me, but shouldnt people just enjoy making their maps and not worry about how popular thier maps are.

Quit your bitching please, most of your maps are probably less fun / more complicated then Nexus Wars

..... so what do you expect

people play custom games to relax. If they want a real game they play a real game.

I mean seriously there are 1000's of people making custom maps. Do you really think people want to play your map that bad. Think again.

Should really come to the map making with a view that chances are nobody is gonna play your map except you and your friends. Granted Blizz has already stated that they will be revamping the whole custom games list / search features. Be patient and enjoy your creatations.

What if I find that perfect relaxing fun map that I want to play 20 pages down, but it requires four players? If no one else goes down that far I will never be able to play it, I will leave, and it will not get popular. Have you ever tried Nexus wars by yourself?

Found it, and I think it comes from a very reputable voice...

Dunno why he hasn't put it here yet, unless I'm understanding it wrong.

I heard that the system is actually per player per hour. This means that short and long maps are the same, but maps with more player slots are automatically more popular.

Hmmm, it seems that so far in phase 2 this hasn't been improved. I hope it will change soon (or else we will have to make 20 rickroll maps and a few bots).

If you spend time polishing a map your map will be on page 3901248210391204812091039 in the map list when it is finally released. The only way to beat the system is by outracing the other maps so yours is first.

Also, exploiting broken maps so you win is fun.

    This.

Also, new versions start at the bottom of the popularity list and stay there. Thirdly, it's still beta, the editor is still new. Fourthly, (correct me if i'm wrong) without publishing a map it is not possible to play/test it online without 3rd party programs

I'm really looking forward to this. I was considering doing a similar, turn-based RPG style game as my first project, but then I saw the work you did and decided to work on something else for a while instead and let you continue to improve this system. Keep up the great work!

I have some questions: Do you plan on releasing the code for this combat system for public use, so people can use it to make their own turn-based RPGs? Have you thought about doing anything multiplayer with this? It could be people controlling different characters in just one party, or people having their own separate turn-based fights with their own full party... or others? Have you worked on any of the other systems for your RPG? Inventory, equipment, items, world map/locale map/battle map system, quests, or other fancy stuff? If so, I'm interested to know more.

Don't forget XP and a leveling system!

posted a message on No point in creating more maps - popularity sort

I'm fairly sure how the algorithm works, but someone should make sure im getting this right...

First, a map starts at 0 popularity at the bottom of the list (as stated). After a group of people play it, its popularity rises, either by the number of games or players. As more players play a game, its popularity rises even more. The higher it is on the list, the more people play it, making an almost permanent list that was started from the last reset. Also, when a map doesnt last very long (eg crashes on start) more people may (try to) replay it, again increasing its popularity (therefore it goes up on list, more people play it, and so on).

Thus, a bulleted list (please add more points if you wish):

    • First games on Battle.net are popular
    • Popular games on Battle.net are popular
    • Short games on Battle.net are popular (because of the amount of remakes)
    • New versions of maps start (and usually stay) as UNpopular
    • Long maps are UNpopular
    • New maps are UNpopular

On a side note, you must look through the whole popularity list to find the newest maps, all the way at the bottom. The create map screen does not have a search all function.

I think a "maps being hosted right now" sort in order of time would work. This would almost work like Warcraft III, except that, say, Dota would take one slot that would usually be on top, but not always.
