This is a quick Tutorial about how to give your Unit an own Modell.
Step 1
Create a new Map.
Im using Heart of the Swarm, but you can do it with Wings of Liberty too.
Step 2
Open the Trigger Editor and delete the Melee-Initialization.
- You dont have to do that, but with this you can see your Unit Ingame.
Close the Trigger Editor.
Step 3
Open the Data Editor.
Press Ctrl+1 and activate every of the Buttons between the XML Pictures..
Open the following Tabs:
Units
Actor
Models
Step 4

Go to the Units Tab and press Rightclick+"New Unit"
Give it a Name, i will use "Medic".
Klick "Suggest"
Copy the Data from the "Zealot" and press "OK"

Go to "Actor" and make an new Actor.
Name it (In my case Medic). Press "Suggest" and Change the Actor type to "Unit".
Copy the Data from the "Zealot" and press "OK"

Go to "Model" and make an new Model.
Name it (In my case Medic). Press "Suggest".
Copy the Data from the "Zealot" and press "OK"
Change the Model to anything you like. (Standart: Assets\Units\Protoss\Zealot\Zealot.m3)
I have changed it to: Assets\Units\Terran\MedicMercenary\MedicMercenary.m3
Step 5
Go to your Actor and select it.
You should see an Field named "Token".
Click on its Value and change it to your unit.
Step 6
You can now place your Unit Ingame.
For Questions use the "Comment" Button or send an E-Mail at [email protected].
Im not responsible for any Damage caused to your Map wich is made because of this Tutorial.
It's probably not a good idea for people st this level to be copying data. I would reccomend adding depth to that part. Also I'd suggest using WoL so people without HoTs can open it
I used the copy Data because for creating your first Unit with Modell its a lot easier to understand, but i will write an addition wich is working without the "Copy" Funktion.
Hi, I don't know if you're still around but I was wondering if you could do a tutorial similar to this one on how to allow a unit to build a structure. I made a custom unit, attached a model to it, labeled it as a structure, made a button for it, but I can't figure out how to add it to a build menu.

It's not really that much more work our understanding. Plus copying can cause so many issues.
