Use max 2011. Also, if you try to import models from HoTS you're gonna have a bad time. The format has changed and the importer doesn't fully support it.
So for importing M3 we still have to use this plugin you did, then for exporting will use the Art Tools? How does that go when you said they do not work well for HotS? What do you mean' the format has changed' does Art Tools support that?
If you import models from WoL then everything works just fine (everything that was done of course ;) ).
If you import models from HoTS however I believe something goes wrong on the animations side. I'm not sure, people were complaining about that.
But as far as import/export goes then yeah - use import scripts and export using art tools.
Till 23th of august I'm busy but after that I'm going back to scripts and will do full import with proper art tools support :)
There is currently a workaround which works with some but not all HotS models whereby you use the Blender M3 plugin (Blender is free) as for whatever reason it is able to import HotS models which the Max scripts can't (again, some HotS models will still not import) you can then rexport them as M3s from Blender which can then be imported by the Max scripts.
It's a bit longwinded but it's the only way to get animated HotS models into Max at the moment that I know of.

Hey
I am using the plugins here to import to 3ds max http://www.sc2mapster.com/assets/m3-export-plugin-3ds-max/
MDX models from warcraft 3 work, but M3 models from StarCraft 2 do not?
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks, don't know if this is in the right section
