For this week's exercise, I want you to recreate an album cover or movie poster. Please include a link to the shot you're recreating in your post. This exercise will close on 11/14.
Look, this might come out as being stupid or ignorant. But I feel like the terraining "exercises" has moved away from the purpose of it. The way I see it, is that it is meant for people to map out a terrain that "could" be playable in a real map, instead of just putting in a big amount of doodads and create a small scene. I know that, of course, you can make a scene if thats what you want, but I think that too many people are doing that now. And it's probably because every "theme" as of lately encourages it.
As i said, this might've come out wrong, but back in the day some years ago, we could come here and look at the screenshot and be like "damn, that looks like one hell of a map, i would love to play that" And now it's more like "yeah thats some cool 2 doodas, but what's the purpose?" Anyways, this was my small rant in hoping the themes will change, encouraging people to actually do "terraining" instead of doing just a scene. Thank you and have a good day.
Hah, since I am more into making micro scenes I can sort of take the blame in promoting these sort of scenes.
Frankly, I am not sure I agree however, as many other recent exercises have provided a broad enough theme and people have posted scenses that would be feasible to see playable; many are mostly mockups regardless. I can totally understand if you feel this specific one doesnt fit, but if you look back, there were a lot of themes that didnt lead much to playable maps either.
It should be noted that the audience has vastly diminished and with only the scenemakes like lucid and me, it might provide a more skewed perception. It doesnt help much that Mozared was absent for a good while and deflated interest, and other mods are mostly playing catch up to keep the ball rolling.
As it has always been the case, you are more than invited to suggest themes and such in the global thread.
Sure. I know the earlier themes has been much more broad. But then maybe it's just me. I just feel like not a lot of effort goes into the stuff that you(users) create. Most of the stuff that I see could be made in, what.. and hour or less? Back in the day I used to look at the theme on day one, and then spend a couple of days working on a map. Sometimes it wasnt worth putting up, and sometimes i was too late to put it up. But I still spent quite a lot of time on it. I dont see that anymore, and that makes me sad :(

. Most of the stuff that I see could be made in, what.. and hour or less?
Yup*. In my case I really cant afford much anymore. Bteween juggling with own project and the infinite number of real life stuff to do, there is barely much time for me to invest. Take into account that its probably the same for many other participants, including wargirl and scbroodssc2. Im trying my best to at least post something and keep the ball rolling.
In the time that I've been doing WTEs (about a year), these smaller scenes have been the focus of the WTE. I think the smaller focus helps attract participation in a couple ways: first for people who don't have a lot of time and second for newcomers who are intimidated by having to do a ton of work. I'm certainly not going to say that people need to make entire maps to participate in the WTE.
In terms of the themes themselves, I must object to the idea that these exercises aren't representative of playable maps. They might not be ideal for melee maps, but the attention to detail and presentation that goes into these creations is right at home in something like a campaign. Also, the skills you employ in creating these smaller focused areas are easily expandable to the creation of entire maps.
All of that said, if you want to make entire melee maps, please do! It's not in my skill set to critique them, but I'm happy to see other kinds of submissions.
I'm going to try to get something done for this tomorrow—we'll see if I can break myself away from playing Dishonored 2.
Well, this one is certainly useless for melee play. I went with Cake's B-Sides and Rarities—couldn't do a nice floating in nowhere effect, so I added some terrain below the car instead.
Im not saying i want people to make entire melee maps. That would be impossible. Im just asking for things bigger than just a small flat scene with a few doodads added. That's not terraining, so it is breaking the purpose of this ongoing thing.
I've also been doing WTEs loosely for 3 years now, and maybe the motivation has just died..
You could have made the picture out of rocks on the ground or only using terrain heigh tool and lighting ;) Terraining is in part about developping different thinking and looking at things differently, use things differently in some unusual ways that makes it surpsingly better and interesting.
But to me, you did something interesting still, even if it's not really terraining, it's cool to see you try something. To me everyone have to stay open minded and actually see things like this, that is not terraining at all, as a potential idea for something else that you would not think of without seeing the pictures. Kind of a brainstorming.

Lucid,
Since you are the imperator now...can you change the Main page to include the dates for the WTE exercies.
I think the Bi-weekly Testing thread should be removed or say Postpone...or something
I remember him telling me he doesnt have that specific power yet. Maybe some day or some other mod

Agreed. Although a lot of the WTE submissions are beautiful they are good for nothing but cutscenes because they are often unpathable.

But take the latest post by CybrosX for example
That's not terrain at all. Like, not even 1%. So I dont know what it is doing in here. No offense to CybrosX obviously, but it just isn't terraining.
I know, but cover band..Not all cover bands are possible to make with terrain so...w need new weekly terraining :D
