Hi. I've only created a single campaign for SC2, with only 7 maps, but I tried really hard to make each map as different from one another as possible. This allowed me to learn many aspects of the editor. I'm not a perfect data editor, but I feel confident.
Your idea to have different heroes could be the excellent starting point for you to dive deeper into unfamiliar SC2-editor-territory. You should also consider a gameplay-first approach. It might be more time-consuming, but in my opinion the result is better when you focus on gameplay first, and then work on terrain and additional art.
