Bump again. Just been doing basic maintenance, bugs and such. Took a month off from the project, but am drawn back because my map has been floating around page 2; with annoying bugs. Anyone looking to play the game, it wouldn't take long to get a multiplayer game going on on American servers.
The game can always be played with/against AI as well, set up in-game.
Heyo, almost a full year later! After a good deal of testing for the RTC contest a year ago, I packed the game in and decided it needed a lot more work; and I have been working on it all year, for the next big release (now). I re-did the topic post to reflect the current game state; and shortened it a lot, so it is worth reading. Hopefully it will be the bi-weekly tested map soon; and I would really like to get as much feedback as possible as I move into the final stages on the map; and make an honest effort to "put the map out there" on the arcade.
"Custom Hero Arena!" is the map name on all servers; and I am very receptive to feedback that isn't "Hey, I see you've spent a lot of time on a project, want to make X project for me? (Cuz I have the best ideas in the world)"
I finally completed the vendor item system, which works with my inventory and all. It ended up being a much larger project than I had intended initially.
What it does, in a huge nutshell:
I can create endless tiers of items if needed; currently I only plan on 5. I can set "required item slots" as I have done with weapons. I can have options which remove these restrictions; or I can create more pretty easily if I need to. All items are linked to my inventory properly; which was a huge pain in the ass; but will be easy to modify if I ever need to. There are disabled equipment slots, which are enabled as the game progresses; to limit the early game overwhelming aspect of too many choices. If more items per tier are needed, they can be very easily added with just a few clicks.
Overall, I built this; along with my inventory, to be usable in multiple situations; should it ever come to that.
Update, added a video. The game is still not playable though. As you can see in the video and screen shots, I am still lacking some abilities. I have 2/3 of the item system completed; the creep system is created, and there are a handful of creep abilities. There will be a few more before release as well.
wargirl is helping me with the terrain over the next couple of weeks; and by that point boss fights will be the only thing lacking. I still plan to have a beta-release in late september/early october, and am on-target with my original time frame. When I get there, I will create a RTC thread, and link to the game.
I tend to be long winded, and will try not to be. Check the project page above for a lot of specifics.
4 years (off and on) and about 4000 editor hours later, my pet project has finally come to life. It will never be finished, as there is always more to be added.
The Project Summary
"Customize a hero, pick its stats, its skills, and customize those skills. Buy equipment as you level. Kill monsters, bosses, and the other team in periodic competitions. This game is a casually-paced Warcraft 3 style hero arena (15-25 APM), with more attention towards soft counters than perfectly placed skill shots or micro.
A lot of effort this past year has gone into make the game more accessible to first time players; and in the arcade it has become very noticeable. Where I used to lose a player within 5 min, almost always, now all players stay for the full duration (40-90 min), which is impressive, given the game length.
Go Test It!
The map name is Custom Hero Arena! and it is on all servers. battlenet::starcraft/map/1/263274 is a direct link to the map on NA. Hopefully it will be put up as the bi-weekly map shortly. Once the game begins, you will see that you can add AI to the game, so you can play alone if you'd like. The AI on hard WILL beat you. It is a multiplayer game though, so if you have a friend, it can be a lot of fun to 2v2 the AI.
