Hoping to learn how yto use SC2 data editor, in order to create usable spells and such. I am a complete noob at this, but hoping to be able to learn so that I can help some friends with a map they are working on. Contact me in game at Kira, 612.
I recommend you contact one of the people listed as data experts or whatever in the first post - many people don't check this thread because it's purpose isn't for people to come here and ask, but so that people that need to ask find a list of names of people they should contact directly. Many people who will gladly help you won't because they won't know you needed help, if you understand what I'm trying to say.
I'm good at the data editor and have made a ton of custom abilities, but I think you'll prefer to ask someone else, because I guess you are somewhere in the americas (judging from the time of your post), and I am in the EU and I generally dont check the forum at 2 AM (Which is right now)
Well i just contacted some of the mentor list yesterday and i already got a response ( after my night of rest which i really needed because after a full night mapping :P)
So atleast mine ( for triggers ) responded pretty fast and i will likey ask another mentor about data stuff.
Just so u know :P
It isn't because i'm such a noob that needs to learn everything i know most stuff from wc3 but only problem in starcraft II it has just a different name as in wc3 but it's the same trigger type so sometimes i'm searching for a certain trigger for a while pff :P
Give the people time to check their e-mails, Pm's, etc...
Also, there is a lot of resources in the Sc2mapster Wiki. Do some tutorials, they are by far the best way to learn. Even if the tutorial does not touch directly the effect you are after, it is a learning experience and it will help you understand how the data editor is setup, thus helping you in the end in being able to do anything you want in the data editor.
Last summer I sat out to learn trigger editing. A month and a half later of doing tutorial after tutorial, I felt I was ready. Now I'm a member of two major projects and I mentor people, Also wrote a tutorial. It takes time but while you are looking for a mentor, it is a good place to start.

I'd really love to learn how to use the Data Editor as I have never touched a map editor before. It'd be really cool to learn Data Editing, Triggers, but right now Data Editing interests me the most.
I'm looking for a mentor that is very skilled in this area, has the time to help me learn and is able to explain and answer questions without frustration. :)
Read the first page. Between me, Kueken531 and BorgDragon, there are probably no better data editors. If you want highly experimental stuff (nothing like it has been tried before) then use me, Kueken531 is good at actor visuals and BorgDragon can cover some trigger data interactions.

No one mentioned bull crap about Dryeyece. But thanks for the input. And if your referring to his comment about there being "no better data editors" than the ones he listed, from my lurking I have rarely ever seen Dryeyece participate in the community to make a name for himself aside from the rare bursts about Tofu.
I bet you all are pretty good, but I'm looking for someone that has the time and patience to do it. Good at explaining things would be a plus. I just want to learn how to do the data editor, I don't want someone to just drop a bunch of stuff in my lap for me to somehow manage my way through the data editor alone, you know?
But yeah, if you have the time and patience, I'd love to learn from you.

Well, as flattering as this sounds, I doubt, this is the case. We just show off our stuff more than most others, so we are essentially the better attention whores ;)
Not to mention, that you cannot really quantify something like "Data Editor Skill". I am sure, Dryeyce can do some amazing stuff in the data editor, and so can we (and probably many others), but everyone does his stuff differently.
You can always ask your questions in the forums or drop me a pm, chances are high, I will answer those. I think, I am pretty good at explaining, as well. Also, the sc2mapster IRC channel is a nice place for a quick answer.
However, I don't have the time to personally teach you everything about the editor. Good luck in finding someone, though :)

That is the problem with lurking, you do not really gain much of an insight into anything. Dry usually hangs out in IRC, and has helped countless people ... so if people wanna post bullshit, I will call them on it. Because there is a difference between some random saying; Oh, they are the best data editor - with nothing (or near nothing) to show for it ... and me saying I am one of the best UI designers in our community, because I can back up my claim with my work ... and after Tofu, when I do all my tutorials, you guys should be able to go far beyond my skill level cause you will be starting right where I am at right now ...
Fact is, you and Dry don't have your names placed on the Mentor List. The guy's asking for a mentor. We each have our specialties. You and Dry want to focus on your project, go right ahead, I don't see anything being wrong with that, but you don't have to be totally balls to the wall overly passive aggressive towards DrSuperEvil.
I've worked with Dryeyece and I know he's amazing. I've seen your stuff Dogmai, again, you are amazing at what you do. Me, I don't think I'm amazing, but I've got some talent no doubt for the amount of time I put into the Editor. I've no desire to spend MONTHS making a map. Not to toot my own horn or anything, but I've turned down a few lead data editor positions from very strong projects(I've never told anyone before because it didn't matter), because A) I don't have the time for it/don't want to devote the time to it. and B) I do data editing as a hobby.
I'm sure DrSuperEvil was referring to actual Mentors when he wrote "no better than X".
I'm sure if Dryeyece posted alot of maps and even participated in WDE's or just random shit on the forum, and had put his name up for Mentor, that he'd have been mentioned no doubt.
What, are we supposed to refer people to you, Dry, ProzaicMuze, or even progammer? NO. Because that'd probably flood your inboxes and take time away from your projects and because you/they aren't on the fucking list.
I've referred several people to DrSuperEvil and/or Kueken at times because they were asking for help with things I'd never explored before but I knew that either of them would likely know. Hypothetically, if someone would ask about some crazy, over the top ability that I couldn't figure out, I would reference Dryeyece without even thinking, IF he was on the list.
So before you go "calling out people's bullshit", take everything into context.
I was flat out surprised and shocked that DrSuperEvil even mentioned me, and I thought of Dry because he helped me out quite a bit in my early days. But you didn't see me post and suggest Dry because he ain't on the god damn list.
As for the Dryeyece thing, when someone says that they are the best data editors, its a matter of opinion, therefore it doesnt contradict your beliefs that Dry is the best, or that you are the best.
and helping people in the IRC doesnt really give you a name for yourself, look at JademusReg, a decent amount of peopel have no idea who it is, Yet he is the most helpful person on IRC, and I say that because he is the one helping everyone about 70% of the time, not that no one else helps alot, but hes doing it VERY often.
It has nothing to do with me ... I was pointed to the thread by numerous little birdies who all face palmed and egged me on ... I couldn't resist ... but at least my rep got a little bit higher, so I musta said something right. ;)
Well I apologize for my little rant, lol. I was pretty drunk when I got home last night, hahaha, and I think it took me almost an hour to write, correcting all the spelling mistakes :P
Perhaps those people who face palmed and egged you on should read my post... I still think it stands mostly true to the fact that there's only so many names on the list. Perhaps it's time to get those little birdies to post their own names, and their preferred contact method being through IRC???
Food for thought. ;P
And, what do you mean about your rep got higher? With who?
Hi,
im new to mapster (not starcraft) and had an idea for a map. Sort of the unholy love child of nexus wars and marine areana. I have already constructed a map but i am having trouble with the custom buildings and units. So far all the tutorials i have seen have not included what i need. So please can some one who is good with data either teach me how to do this or point me towards a tutorial/s that could help.
Thank you

I will use any tools needed to help. Teamview, teamspeak, ventrilo, skype. Whatever. I want to help!!!
Note: I really just want to help my fellow mappers. I will be more than happy to help ANYONE with any trigger problem what so ever!
