This contest is about melee gameplay! I'm sure you all remember the SC1 Legacy Remake Contest we held a few weeks ago... Given the amount of submissions and general interest, I thought it'd only be fair to have a Melee remake for all those War3 players out there as well. Again, Blizzard has said they would consider using our maps in the official Ladder, so why not take a shot at making a map worthy of pro gamers like Boxer and Huk?
What to do?
Recreate a War3 Melee Map as you see fit. The goal is to create a balanced SC2 melee map, but must be a replicate of the original map. So that means the map itself must be correct in terms of cliff and player placement, etc.
You can add in things like the Xel'Naga Watch Tower, etc from SC2, or change the amount of resources so things are balanced in terms of SC2.
You have to provide a screenshot of both Minimaps. (War3 Minimap and SC2 Minimap).
You have to attach your recreated SC2 Map. The original War3 Map is not required, but may be included as well.
You can give an optional description of your map with a little information on what you changed, if anything.
Resources
Feel free to check out the SC1 Legacy Remake Contest to see how people converted normal SC1 maps into SC2 Maps. In a lot of the submissions you can see that everything is the same for the most part, though things like Xel'Naga Watch Towers and some Line of Sight doodads are added here and there. This is great! It keeps the maps general layout, concept, and play-style the same, with some SC2-esque changes.
In addition, Rod has created a guide to go along with all of this, so you can read it to learn how to properly create a Legacy map in SC2.
Dimfish's SC2 Map Analyzer which gives a lot of cool statistical information about your map that will likely be extremely useful for recreating your map with perfect balance.
If you need a War3 Map Editor you can use WorldEdit, the default Editor that came with the game.
Deadlines
Seeing as how Christmas and New Years are coming up, i'm going to give everyone plenty of time on this contest. You have 18 days to complete this contest.
End of the submissions: Saturday, January 8th - Midnight PDT (Los Angeles) [Sunday, January 9th - 9 AM GMT (Paris)]
End of the submissions: Saturday, January 1st - Midnight PDT (Los Angeles) [Sunday, January 2nd - 9 AM GMT (Paris)]
A public vote will be held after the end of the submissions to decide who wins.
Reward
The main goal of the contest is to further community development within GalaxyEdit. The rewards can be see as follows:
War3 is going to be more difficult to pull off since it had the neutral buildings like merc camps and it used trees as a resource, so the maps were covered with them. Could we replace trees with inaccessible areas?
Actually, I've actually played a map in sc1 with mineral cutting. They had 10-50 min per. You also got a vespene geyser with lots more than usual. You'd be making a SC1 and War3 Legacy map conversion.
There's 2 possibilities,
1st- I'm wrong
2nd- You don't get the way this contest is heading at ALL. There shouldn't be hundreds vespene geser in the map like you saying, where is Starcraft 2 in that? The contest ask you make a MELEE GAME that fit for Starcraft 2 by making a REMAKE of the TERRAIN of a WAR3 MAP. That means, you make hundreds tree, which dosen't have any uses, and add a vespene geyser near the mineral field.
And by the way, the trees in wc3 are using the same gathering method as the mineral field in SC2, as well as the Gold Mine in wc3 uses the same gathering method as the Vespene geyser in Sc2.
SO, the map you wanna make ( the one with full of minerals everywhere that must be cut) CANT be considered for that contest as it can't be a multiplayer played map.
If you think i'm wrong, then say me why the heck would Huk and Boxer play that map duh?
A great exemple of conversion would be the 1v1 one called Pirate * that is in Reign of chaos. A player at the left, one at the right, 4 extension emplacement, where 2 are only accesible by.. DO NOT MAKE IT THAT'S MINE!
PS: if i'm wrong, in all the term, then please, after saying me all the insult and stuff you wanna put in your message, add some explanation on where i misunderstood it, cause i'm actually sure i'm right.
@XanoX02: Go QUEBEC ROCKS! but in term of prosperity xD
I guess I'll cut the red ribbon on the contest. I did my remake of TFT's Secret Valley, a 1v1 melee map.
Original War3 Map:
SC2 Remake:
I had to take a bit of artistic license since the map was designed for War3-esque game play and that didn't work whatsoever in SC2 style game play.
More images below.
EDIT: After looking at the image of the map, I moved the main ramp into the expansion to the left, leaving the back door more of a back door instead of a side door. I also made the back doors a rock-blocked ramp instead of a cliff, making it a true back door. Finally, I switched the positions of the third expansions and gold expansions.
Wow, I almost feel like I'm necroposting. This thread isn't seeing much action. I kinda expected at least 5 maps by now. Still, it is Christmas break, and there is still a couple of weeks until the end of the contest...
Anyway, Here's another submission of mine. This one's from TFT's Excavation Site, this time a 2v2.
War3 Original:
SC2 Remake:
This one converted much easier, so I was able to keep to the original cliff layout much more, but I still ran into layout problems that I had with my Secret Valley map.
It would certainly make life a lot easier if the editor came with a symmetry option, huh? I had to work on each base's terrain , then once I got it to where I liked it, I copied and rotated 180 degrees. Then I played with the heights and textures until they blended.
I'd really like to partake in this contest, though being that winter break just started and I've been bogged down with work these past few weeks, I'm having trouble finding time to even get on IRC much less time to develop a new map. Hopefully I'll be able to submit something to this contest, but, so far it's not looking like I'll have the time.

Might try to make one of those maps.
I'll update my post in a few hours, i've got an exam this Morning.
I will add a picture and a map name.
What about that one map that was totally covered in trees? And you had to dig your way to the enemy? Lol that would be funny in starcraft.
@zeldarules28: Go
lol. totally.
perhaps use minerals with only a few amount left?
That would be interesting to see a UMS like that..
So I just need to take one from these map and make it to SC2? http://classic.battle.net/war3/maps/mappictures.shtml http://classic.battle.net/war3/maps/war3xmappictures.shtml

Actually. There's a unit called haven tree. Use that and change it in the data editor to give you gas for gathering from them. :)

So is it possible that i can remake the 1v1 Booty Bay map from Warcraft 3 for the contest.
Off Topic.
Here is minerals you have to collect and that way reach your opponent by Ground.
Cutting your way through

About your first one, how did you made it so symetric?

Come on, people. I don't want to be the only participant! The SC1 contest had tons of maps. What's happening this time?
Ooo, I didn't see those. Thanks, ;).
Seriously! I'll give everyone more time if needed. It is a busy time of the year..
I would love to remake "Stromguarde":
But I have no idea on how to define AI stuff like choke points, naturals and etc.
A short "do this and this" would fix it and make me want to remake it :P.
