Final Gameplay Trailer:
General:
Heavy Iron will be a 2v2 teamplay based third person shooter map in the style of modern shooters. Heavy Iron approaches most of the aspects of a third person shooter map alittle different, it wont be class based but rather focuses on player customization.
Heavy Iron will follow the concepts of modern shooters such as Battlefield: Bad Company or Modern Warfare and implents alot of their features into its gameplay. This includes a rather bombastic presentation and tactical gameplay.
Heavy Iron uses martinolsson TPS engine for the basic movement and aiming system, even though highly modified.
Story
Announcement Trailer:
A planet, torn apart by civil wars, revolts and catastrophes. This once highly populated and rich planet got abandoned by its population and left alone in the universe, now hovering in space, cold and dead. Shortly after those events, mercenaries used this planet as a hideout between missions. Over time, the planet became highly popular in the circles of criminals and outlaws. Soon, the planet would be the shelter for murderes, criminals, mercenaries and the entire scum of the galaxie. Spaceships would usually seek to avoid this rotten place at all costs.
The planet got left alone by the rest of the galaxy, but then, a spacecraft of the dominion, transporting secret weaponry, got shot down and crashed into the planets surface. All the scum seeking shelter on the planet came out of their holes and ripped the spaceship and its crew apart, everyone trying to get these weapons into their hands. And indeed, they succeeded. Half of the secret weaponry the ship was carrying got into the hands of mercenaries.
Now, a war rages, between the survivors of the crashlanding, and the scum on the planet, both utilizing the secret firepower that was transported by the ship.
Gameplay:
As mentioned before, the gameplay highly relies on teamplay, strategic thinking and good positioning. The map will support 8 players, so the perfect set-up is a 2v2. The goal of the game is in contrast rather simple:
the first team that reaches 50 kills wins. The teams are red (mercenaries) and blue (survivors), the red team features a darker colored vehicle than the blue team, which makes distinguishing easier. Also, there are alot of features which will provide that there is always something special going on.
Controls and Basics:
In Heavy Iron, unlike most other TPS maps, the player does not control a marine, ghost or whatnot, but a big tank like vehicle.
The control and movement scheme is alittle different from other third person shooter maps. As usual, WASD moves your character into all four directions, however, it is boosting that will mainly get you across the map. This mechanic is inspired by racing games and makes moving around way more interesting. While boosting, you can control your character only with your mouse and the player can only use his primary weapon. In addition, while boosting, a player can ram another player, which deals alot of damage.
Aside from that, the player has access to a primary and secondary weapon, a special ability and a deployable mine. Depending on the circumstances, the player can also access killstreak specials and a power ability.
Additionally, the player has 200 health and 20 ammunition. Also it should be noted that damage indication is highly obvious: Whenever you get hit, your screen blurs for a blink of an eye. This allows for more tactical depth and less chaotic combat.
Control scheme:
WASD = Moving
Left mouse = Primary Weapon
Right mouse = Secondary Weapon
SHIFT = Boost/ramming
Space = Jump
F = Zoom
Q = Special Ability
G = Lay/Detonate/Reload mine
E = Interact
R = Activate Killstreak Special
H = Activate Power Ability
M = Show Mapscreen
Tab = Show Scoreboard
All of these features will be further explained now.
Customizing your Warmachine
At the beginning of the game, the players will have 1 minute before the game starts to customize their very own warmachine. They can choose between 2 primary and 2 secondary weapons, 4 special abilitys and 3 mine types. More options might be added later. It is crucial to winning a game that a team works together and uses their abilitys to their advantage. Note that the players still can further customize their character after the game started, but they can also be attacked then.
Primary Weapons
The primary weapons are your primary way of attacking. They are powerfull and can kill an enemy within the blink of an eye. However, unlike the secondary weapons, the primary weapons need ammunition, which will drain very fast and can only be restored by ammunition chests.
Heavy Iron:
The Heavy Iron can be described as the "core" weapon of the game. It is a powerfull fast firing allrounder weapon that is usefull in every situation and as such, no team should go without atleast 1 Heavy Iron.
With each shot, the Heavy Iron deals 25 damage.
Missle Launcher:
The Missle Launcher is an extremly destructive weapon when used in the right way. While the Missle Launcher is clearly inferior to the Heavy Iron in close combat, it is an highly effective support weapon. The Missle Launcher is unaimable when no target is aquired and will simple shoot straight forward. However, if you have your cross over an enemie, the Missle Launcher will target and mark the enemie, which makes him easier to spot for others. After a short time of charging up, this weapon will then shoot a Missle that deals 100 damage and pursues the target, making this weapon very hard to dodge. Used right, the Missle Launcher can lay waste to an entire groups of enemies. However, one Missle requires 5 points of ammunition and needs alot of time to reload.
Secondary Weapons
When your ammunition runs out, the secondary weapons are the weapons to turn to. They dont do nearly as much damage the the primary weapons, but are far easier to use and are great for support.
Chain Gun:
The Chain Gun is an extremly fast firing support weapon, which can be fired while shooting your primary weapon. Considering the extremly high rate of fire, the Chain Gun is great to support a Heavy Iron or pin down enemies. Each shoot does 5 damage. However, the Chain Gun is not strong enough to pierce through the shield of a protector mine.
Burst Rifle:
The Burst Rifle has a mediocre firing speed, but a damage of 15. The Burst Rifle is great to act as support for a Missle Launcher or act as an replacement for a Heavy Iron.
Special Abilitys
Your playstyle depends on your choice of your special ability. These abilitys offer great advantages in certain situations and can win you a match. Good teams should choose special abilitys wisely. The status of your special ability is represented by a big stylized "A" on the top right of your screen. White means "available", glowing means "activated" and grey means "recharging".
Heavy Weapons:
Heavy Weapons is among the easiest to use special abilitys. Activated, this ability increases the damage of all your weapons by 300% for a very short period of time. Except for the Missle Launcher, where only the marked enemy will take 300% damage. This also means that other players will deal 300% damage on the marked player, too.
Cloaking Tech:
The Cloaking Technology will make your vehicle invisible to enemies, but only for a short period of time. While invisible, you cannot be targeted in any way, which means you do not take damage from just beeing shot at. However, as soon as you shoot or take damage in any way, the invisibility turns off. This ability is great in combination with the Missle Launcher.
Spawn Medipack:
Spawns a Medipack next to you which will heal you and your team at a rapid speed, before its time runs out. However, the Medipack can only heal one player at a time.
Spawn Turret:
Spawns a turret which will last for a short period of time. The turret has average range and attacks at an insanely fast speed, while it itself can take alot of damage. Great to defend a position or keep players from activating a control tower. However, the bullets of this turret cannot pierce through the shields of a protector mine.
Mines
Mines are also an essential part of the gameplay. While they may seem useless at first, their are highly important to gain map control or to secure positions, which can win you a game. The status of your mine can be viewed at the bottom right of the screen. When a crossed out mine appears there, it means that the mine is laid and/or needs to be reload.
Tactical Mine:
As the name suggests, the tactical mine is supposed to be used with strategic thinking, which makes it the hardest mine to use. Pressing G after the mine is already laid will result in a short countdown, after which this mine will detonate and deal 200 damage to everything in its range, killing players instantely. Detonating will automatically reload the mine. The mine itself can take 100 damage, which can delay players from taking a position.
Seeker Mine:
The Seeker Mine seeks its target own its own and will deal 55 damage when detonating. Pressing G again after the mine is laid will detonate the mine without doing damage and reload it. Great for setting up traps or ambushing players. The mine itself can take 50 damage.
Protector Mine:
All mines are great to defend positions, however, instead of doing damage, the protector mine creates a forcefield which will reduce the damage taken for every friendly player in range by 10. After the mines energy runs out, it destroys itself and reloads. This mine is great to use in combat, expecially seeing how weapons that deal less then 10 damage will not do any damage at all.
After all choices are made, you are ready to step into the battlefield.
Control Towers
Another feature which tries to make the game more teambased and interesting are the Control Towers. These Towers can be taken by stepping on the glowing platforms infront of them and pressing "E". Then, a tower in teamcolor will build itself up infront of you and after a short time, the Control Tower is yours. Control Towers will give your team major advantages or the enemie team disadvantages. To take a taken Tower back, you first have to destroy the teamcolored Tower of the other Team.There are two kinds of control towers.
Shield Battery:
When taken, this Tower will heal your team to the fullest, every minute.
Communication Bay:
When taken, this Tower will disrupt the enemie team every minute. Disrupted players cant boost and are disoriented.
Items and Pickups
There are two Pickups in Heavy Iron. To get one, simply drive over them:
Ammunition Chest:
The ammunition chests are scattered across the map. When picked up, they will refill the ammo of your primary weapon. The ammunition chests take 1 minute to respawn.
Missile-Cluster:
Just as crucial as the ammunition chests is this pickupable weapon. When picked up, your secondary weapon will be replaced by a Missle-Cluster, which fires a swarm of missles into the direction you are facing. Each of these Missiles will do 100 damage. However, the weapon has limited range and only a few missiles will actually hit. However, this also makes the Missile-Cluster great to attack groups of enemies.
After all 3 ammo rounds are used, the Missle-Cluster goes away and you get your secondary weapon back.
There are two Missle-Cluster pickups on the map, which will respawn every 60 seconds.
The ammunition of the Missle-Cluster is indicated by a little symbol next to the "mine layed" symbol on the bottom right side of the screen. Each red line represents one ammo round:
The Missile-Cluster plays an important role in taking superior positions in the game. Often, you will face enemies which have aquired an much better position than you, making it very hard to defeat them. However, the Missile-Cluster can shoot up walls and clear enemies even in the best positions.
Example:
He has a great position and is hard to shoot:
However, the Missile-Cluster takes care of that problem:
Kill Rewards and Killstreaks
Like modern shooters, it tried my best to make every kill be as rewarding as possible.
Kill Specials
Not only do you get a "Destroyed" text and a cool sound at the top of screen (which serves more as an indicator that you killed something) when you kill an enemy, but you can also get Kill Specials. Kill Specials are displayed as a text after the "Destroyed" text and appear when you killed an enemy in a special way or just did something special like taking a Control Tower. There are so many Kill Specials that you are almost certain to get one with every kill.
Additionally to beeing a nice touch, these Kill Specials also fill up your "Power Meter" which is displayed at the bottom left of the screen, just above your ammunition count.
Power Meter
The Power Meter fills up with every kill and each Kill Special. You need 3000 points for the Power Meter to be full, then you are "overpowered". While overpowered, you have access to your Power Ability, which is a huge and devastating blast that goes across most of the map and kills every enemy in range. This ability can wipe out entire teams.
Killstreak Specials
Another big feature are the Killstreaks. Killstreaks will give you and your team certain benefits when you reach a certain amout of kills without dying. There are 5 Killstreaks. When you get a Killstreak Special, it will display after the "Destroyed" Text. Additionally, a little Icon will appear on the screen that represents the available Killstreak Special.
Killstreak 3: Hypershield
Activates a Hypershield for 5 seconds which will reduce the damage taken to 20%. This can be a life saver in most situations.
Killstreak 5: Ammunition Beacon
For about 20 seconds, your entire team gets an unlimited amout of ammunition.
Killstreak 7: Seeker Mine Placer
Places down 6 Seeker Mines. Great to set up traps or to gain perfect map control.
Killstreak 9: Orbital Beacon
Disrupts and marks every player in the enemie team. Until they die, they now take 300% damage.
Killstreak 11: Hypershield Beacon
Activates your Hypershield which will last until you die. While the Hypershield is activate, you only take 20% damage.
Help Mode
Through the course of testing Heavy Iron, i have noticed that alot of players have a hard time getting into the game with all its controls, features and so on. This is why invented the "Help Mode". The Help Mode pretty much is an interactive Tutorial mode that guides the player through the Map. I can be activated/deactivated by pressing ALT and is normally activated when the game starts.
The Help Mode tells you exactly in which situations what to do, like when you aim something, a text will appear that tells you how to shoot. Or when you run out of ammo, a picture and a short description of an ammunition chest will appear.
Additionally to that, it constantely tells you all the controls you currently need.
This is how the Help Mode looks like, however, it does change depending on the situation:
This feature makes Heavy Iron much easier to access and all in all makes the map feel more like an actual game.
Closed EU Beta:
If you want to be part of the closed beta, write me a PM with your ingame name and code.
That is truly an amazing trailer. Best SC2 footage I have seen since Blizzards own cinematics!
I would love to test this, just PM me whenever :)
Good job!
@Sephiex:
True..
Anywho, I had the honor to test this map, in a what seems to be a fairly bug-free version. To be honest, I had lost my faith in TPS for SC2, but this map proves me wrong. To say this is the by far best TPS I have tried yet, wouldn't tell much about the quality, and would not fit this map justice. I have nothing to compare this with really, the core-dynamics are just working, where every other TPS I have tried has failed miserable.
Good job on this one!
Alright then. A question for you- how did you set up the opening scene with the planet in the background? Was that done with video editing or in-game work? They did the same thing with sc universe, and I thought it was very cool.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Feel free to Send me a PM if you have any questions/concerns!
Planets are just models like marines or pylons. You can use a space terrain as a backdrop and then add a planet doodad or unit. Basically everything you see in SC2 that isn't a cinematic is in the model files.
It was done with composing, so video editing, yes.
BTW, my computer just blew itself up, so i might not be able to get anything done in the next days, depending on how much damage (if any at all) was done to my hard drive. The map is save though, seeing how it is on battle.net.
Just played the closed beta with Crainy, and the gameplay is good. Despite it dragging on for a while (we were 1v1ing when it should be 4v4) I did find it great fun :D. Positioning was everything, especially with our set-ups. Pretty terrain made for a better experience, he says himself that he tried to create 'story' behind the terrain so it's a bit more interesting. Controls were difficult to master but you do get used to it after a while. All in all, a great gameplay experience and a great TPS map, good job Crainy! I await full release ;)

Feedback?
Great trailer. Ends a little suddenly but definitely captured my attention.
@Eiviyn: Go
Looks great!
Decent video-editing, but lacking almost any kind of gameplay...as you are probably aware. So, can't give any real feedback at this time.
We need an extended trailer. I was all excited then it ends. It looks really nice.
Then the Announcement Trailer has done its job :D
However, as i said earlier, a gameplay trailer + a complete presentation of the map is coming, just not yet. But in a few days.
@Crainy: Go
It's been a few days. >.<
True, but i havnt tested enough yet. I´ve had several 1v1 games, but i want to try out atleast how well a 2v2 works.

Want to test. So I can beat you over the head if I don't like the controls, like I did with Malu :P
Count me in aswell ;p
I worked all night long to get the Heavy Iron Cinematic Gameplay trailer done and its finally finished :) .
I did my best to create an awesome and mindblowing trailer, i hope i got it right.
It will be 3 minutes and 30 seconds long, of which around 1 minute will be cinematic.
I can safely say that the full presentation, which is basically a full instruction manual, will be online tomorrow. Be prepared!
