I'm not totally sure, we haven't done tons of concept work on the starmon. That's more of Maity's territory....and his internet's down again >.> I know that we were struggling to find 5 different evolution models for Evee, but the ones we have now are from WoW so sc2 parts wouldn't fit so well. The "mew-like" legendary already has the basic concept art done(which we'll release here once it's polished up more), and Zolden is handling that one. We actually use most of our custom models for moves because it's so important to keep them unique and fancy. Once Maity's back I'll ask him. Thanks for the offer :D
Last time I discussed the terrain with Maity we discussed some interesting objects there that could use new models. Starmon PC's, Starmon-centre healers, fences to jump over and perhaps generic vendor-related stuff. Take your pick :)
I know :D I've actually had ideas for something like (and don't worry, we're not doing this, it's just a fun idea for a "real" Nintendo game) a pokemon game with a permadeath mechanic with heavy rougelike randomization. Your pokemon die, they're gone for good. And it's gritty, gory, and very serious/dramatic.
Now you just reminded me of . YOU WERE THE ONE WHO WAS ALL... 'OOH, I GOTTA DO AN ATTACK!'. YOU COULD'VE JUST WALKED AWAY.
No worries, man :) We appreciate all of you guys helping out and showing support. At the very least we're going to make sure you're all listed under "Special Thanks" for the credits. And of course there's the closed alpha- we'll make sure you guys are the first outside the team to try it out. I'm sure we can find a place to reference to you guys in-game as well. There's not very many NPC's at the moment, but we'll talk to you guys about it later once there's more content.
-yeah, I'm so sorry about that. There's my twelve-year-old immaturity for you.
Anyhow, wondering if maity is disconnected because of the blizzard. Things are pretty nasty out here. Anyhoo, wanted to tell you that I think that for onix-steelx, you should retexture some cool lookin snake thing from WoW and have it evolve onto swarm guardian from sc2 editor(you prob already kno this, just hook up wings o liberty add all dependencies and you should be able to use the swarm guardian skin.)
My Projects:
Sorted Multiplayer Leader Board
Card Shuffle Dialog Demo
Air Wars Mass
Blizzard Fan since Starcraft. The Single Player story is AMAZING IMO, I can't wait for the Expansions. In Warcraft 3 I only enjoy the Custom Maps scene (& Blizzards...
Absolute zero-(ice) initiates hail immediately and deals an automatic damage equal to the user's level.
Power freeze-(ice) pwr 60 accuracy 95 deals double damage if the target is frozen or if it is hailing. If it is hailing, 50% chance to freeze. If the target is frozen, initiates hail.(if it is hailing while the target is frozen, this attack has QUADRUPLE the power.)
Immobilize-(normal) pwr 55 accuracy 100 20% chance to induce freeze, paralysis, or sleep. Can't induce more than one.
Solar guard-(grass) increases def. and sp def. by two stages each, the next Solarbeam attack has +50% power and takes only one turn to charge. This could be the enemie's Solarbeam. If you use the next Solarbeam, def. and sp def. are decreased by two stages.
Whiteout-(ice) pwr 20 accuracy 95 raises power by x2 every time it hits or an opponent takes hail damage. Ten % chance to freeze.
Sunset-(dark) pwr 50 accuracy 90 clears all beneficial status changes on the opponent's starmon, and clears all weather effects.
There is this challenge in pokémon which i forgot its name but the two main rules are perma-death (Releasing your pokémon if they faint) and that you have to capture the first pokémon you encounter in a region. So having something like that built in would be cool.
Last time I discussed the terrain with Maity we discussed some interesting objects there that could use new models. Starmon PC's, Starmon-centre healers, fences to jump over and perhaps generic vendor-related stuff. Take your pick :)
Ohhh nice, I may work on some of that stuff, it's been a looong time since I played a pokémon game but I think I can just google for references. I like working on doodads and some ideas alreacy came to mind.
Not hard to add someone named after you into the game. Can always just add a random NPC into a zone with some random dialogue :p We can give any arena trainer a specific name as well, even if they're not milestone trainers.
Also, you'll have to keep in mind some things when making suggestions:
Moves can be good, but at a certain point they make other moves useless. Look at Trieve's latest batch, they have very interesting mechanics but are not all too powerful, meaning they're not going to be "Optimal" picks. We're already considering nerfing certain original moves due to being too useful (But I first want to see if the health formula change makes them less effective, if I remember right their strength was the ability to one or two shot while having 100% accuracy, which won't be possible anymore). Same goes for abilities
Try not to include starmon as rewards, or legendaries in quest ideas. I just don't think awarding starmon is a good idea. Having to fight a starmon which is captureable is a far better alternative. Also, I'd like to keep starmon "non-unique", in other words naturally obtainable multiple times. There will be a few exceptions of course, but I want to keep the number of them as low as possible.
Also, I live in Croatia :p no problematic blizzards here, but crappy telephone/internet companies.
Thanks for your offer, man :) Can always use custom models. As Mozared said, a fence would be nice (What you posted looks great already, will definitely be useful) plus doodads that will allow us to make pokecenter like buildings (Walls, objects inside, floor tiles). Another would be something for "Ledges" (Things you can jump down, but not walk back up.) Did HotS add support for models that have the terrain texture underneath on them? Could just make some sort of "triangle", front side looks similar to how cliffs do, back side uses the terrain texture so it looks like walkable ground and its very clear what direction you jump from.
And, as Zelda said, our special "event" legendary is being handled by Zolden, but there are other things we could need if you are up for helping :) We already have 3 of the at least 4 Eevee models we need (base, the fire evolution and the ice evolution). In our case, instead of Eevee being a normal pokemon it'll be dark, and each evolution will be dark+something, because that's what models I could find easily to begin with. If you're up for modeling all of em, go ahead and make em single types, I'd greatly appreciate it either way :) Anyway, if we're sticking with the dark+something hybrids, I'd want at least an electric evolution. They all look like dogs/wolves and have something that makes them look "dark" (I can post screenshots of the current models later I think) If you want to make additional evolutions, that would be great as well. Honestly, pretty much any model would be a great help :p If you have any ideas for your own starmon, we still have space for roughly 70-80 :p
Then there's also the trainer model. I was going to look into how the Human models from WoW work and see if their textures are something I can modify with relative ease (i.e. seperated clearly). But if you're up for making a trainer model, that would be awesome :p Main things it would need are seperate textures for Pants, Legs and possibly even skin, team color support for clothes, and a collection of hats would always be welcome :p
As you see, there's a lot of things we could use custom models for. If you feel like helping us, take your pick :) Anything from there would be appreciated, and we know how to work without them all so it's not as if we can't finish the project without them.
That mode could definitely be interesting, but may be somewhat problematic to add as its supposed to be a multiplayer map. Would at least be a relatively low priority - Once we release it, and we make sure that banks do indeed work up to 1 MB in size, we can maybe allow multiple "saves" and can set up such a game mode.
The challenge quests sound incredibly interesting, I'm sure will be adding a lot of them (if they aren't too problematic to add, sort of Zelda's domain). There's just so many possibilities for challenges :) Thanks for the great idea. Also, I like pretty much all of the other ideas as well :p
@TheAlmaity: Go I think I'll stick to doodads for now. The trainer models seem too complex for my modelling abilities, but I may try some starmons. I'd like to see a list, with their types, or maybe just tell me the types that need new starmon. With the models already in SC2 I think plant types are the easiest to make, maybe fire too.
We don't have anything planned, really :p I go through the WoW model viewer, grab anything that makes sense and turn it into a starmon. But yeah, a grass evolution line could come in handy - Perhaps grab the baneling/roach/queen texture Tainted made (They're on the previous page I think) and add some leaves and stuff to them?
Or just focus on doodads - We could definitely use them :p Not sure whether there are tents in SC2, but I'd like to put up camping sites around certain starcenters, and maybe even some other locations.
EDIT: Overall we're going with a more blue-ish theme in the map (mostly the art, for now) than in the original pokemon games which were all more red-ish, so Starcenters would likely be colored blue instead of red. Ultimately up to Mozared though - If you're gonna make doodads, he's the man to talk to since he is more likely to know what he needs than me or Zelda :p
EDIT 2: I promised an image of our current "eevee" models:
Sorry maity didn't know where you lived and it doesn't matter ur just an all around cool dude.
Yeeaaaa, I think that every time I say that you get a legendary, I mean you fight it. Also, by custom starmon, I mean he is a possible award. Ultimately, it's up to you guys what you award as side quest awards, and don't put the moves in or nerf them if u think they are op or lame. I was in the mood for ice-type moves and think that some, if not all, do need nerfing.
Expect a few more ability and side-quest posts from me, since I'm not the best at suggesting moves.
Also, wondering what you think of using the HotS models when they come out fur moar starmon.
Also, wondering what you think of using the HotS models when they come out fur moar starmon.
We want Starmon to be available for WoL players as well as HotS players. Back in the days of Wc3, using WC3 Frozen Throne models in the vanilla Wc3 game would cause problems. So it depends on if blizzard's okay with using those models in WoL maps. If they are, we may use some. But for now we're not using any.
Also, I've got some good news for today's progress. We were experiencing excessive lag spikes with the starmon storage box that were making it unusable. In order to load in the stored starmon, we were having to locate, decrypt, decompress, and read 80 separate "data chunks". So I decided that I needed to change the dialog to cut down load times. I've made the storage box more like the box in real pokemon games- so instead of one huge box with all your starmon inside, you have several smaller "boxes" to use. This re-design will also include a facelift, but the artwork isn't done yet. You'll get to take a peek once that's done.
But here's the numbers as they currently worked out: You have 5 storage boxes, each with space for 16 starmon inside. That means you can have 80 starmon stored in total, plus the 6 in your inventory. This numbers may change if load times become way too large, but with any luck they'll stay this way.

They have already said YOU CAN NOT USE HOTS MODELS IN WOL MAPS.
Anyways from what I understand, the way you publish it, if it has the HoTS Dependency then its HoTS automatically no way to make it WoL, and if you export HoTS models, even if you make changes to them, and Re-Import them, your project and possibly account will be banned.
This information was gathered through watching interviews, reading Battle.net post, and talking directly with blizzard developers.
Every bit of information came strait from blizzard employee mouths or post.
Whos to say you couldnt make a HoTS only version that would only have new starmon of course if you did this you should wait till after your done patching the game and EVERYTHING you want to do is completed.
While we didn't really discuss this between us, that is sort of my plan. I think Zelda is starting college soon which would be problematic, but I think I can do a sort of "expansion" myself, seeing as I'm in charge of most of the content creation anyway, while Zelda is the one who builds the engine, and a HotS version would not need a new engine, and I'm not trigger illiterate so whatever changes need to be made I could do 'em. So even if Zelda will not be able to continue working on this after summer, I should be able to :p But that's a long time away and nothing we are going to be worrying about currently - We want to finish this map, it will take while due to all the quests and elaborate storyline we want to add. There really is no point to us planning out what we will do in possibly over half a year from now - We're focusing on the current WoL-only map at the moment.
yeah :)) i think you should dunno if it would be possible to load bank files from the WoL starmon though.(I know WoL wouldnt be able to read bank files from the new one simply because of the dependency.)
Ok, turns out I assumed wrong about Zelda's college time, he mentioned it once so I assumed he was going this year, but he isn't :p So if we do decide to make a second map for HotS, we should have more than enough time.
I don't see why banks couldn't be read if the maps have different dependencies - They're just text files. They are saved and loaded from an account named after the publishers bnet handle. And even then, I'd probably want to use seperate banks (Possibly with a way to trade starmon between both banks) so that the story can sort of start over, handling it as a sort of "Generation II" game - New starters, new legendaries, etc.
Last time I discussed the terrain with Maity we discussed some interesting objects there that could use new models. Starmon PC's, Starmon-centre healers, fences to jump over and perhaps generic vendor-related stuff. Take your pick :)
