I played this map yesterday on B.net.
I signed up to this site just to give my opinion of it.
Although it had some minor flaws the map is freakin' amazing.
It took me back a few years to playing FFVII (possibly one of the greatest games ever made) for the first time.
Everything the map offered was perfect!
The only sad thing about it is that it left me wanting for more.
I would love to see a follow-up map where the player has a bit more control. Free-roaming, bumping into random enemies, etc.
I wouldn't mind playtesting new versions of the map. =)
The first battles take approx. 10 years to get through which is really tedious because they aren't challenging, the enemies just have way too much hitpoints.
The only "strategy" you need to use is attack, attack, attack and heal occasionally if necessary. It could have some innovations or timing based stuff instead of trying to copy the poorly made battle system that was in FF7.
I don't want to start one of the stupid FF7 internet battles but the battle system in it was painfully slow and full of stuff that were completely unnecessary so this map has potential to be so much better if you don't try to remake it in SC2 and instead put in your own ideas and innovations to it so that it stands out on its own merits.
Other than having severe lag due to certain doodads at points it was an alright game, just felt it was a bit slow with responses sometimes (I'm used to not having to wait, action games ftw hehe). But I think it's a well-made game nonetheless, as mentioned above, perhaps a bit more responsive actions in the fights would be nice. The ability to use your own guys in your own order would also be nice, always having a certain order kind of messes up some combinations I tried to pull off.
Great map! I like your handle of special effects. They looks really good!
A few suggestions (not sure if others have mentioned):
- Final Fantasy style RPG should involve both "walk mode" and "fight mode". It seems that you have only created fight mode. Actually, walk mode is an very important to the game play.
- Once you have added the walk mode, you can add more "minion fights", e.g. group of marine, medic, maracder, firebat, etc in different combination that spawn randomly during the walk mode. Fixed boss fights will only be triggered at fixed location.
- Last but not the least, it is "Aiur", not "Auir".....
Cool map this is, i just got 2 bugs while playing it. First time i got over the first checkpoint and the mutants killed me. Than i wanted to load and when i moved my cursor over the "load" box, it showed "rebel" - the difficulty i have been playing. But when i pressed it, it said "No savefile found" (or something like that). So i played it again from start, but when i have beaten the first boss and i was talking with the commander-guy, suddenly the scientists were talking as well. When i got to them, there were 2 scientists and 2 mutants! Later on, the scientists have mutated and there were 4 mutants!! I really couldnt kill those o.O
Hey i just want to post this real quick cuz it doesnt look like youve had any comments on this recently. But your map is effing cool!! I have never been a big fan of turn-based RPGs but the story and the production skills more than make up for it. Your use of models/doodads/cameras gave it a realistic look believable look. Your acting and story elements actually highlighted the very "old-school" RPGish feel, which is a good thing IMHO.
I'd love to see a tutorial on how you did your cinematics / camer-work!
renewed interest in this game (100% HD's doing) has lead me to take a break from my current project- which is nearing completion- to add additional fights for people who've managed to beat the game on the hardest difficulty. These bosses can be loaded from the save/load menu.
For now there is only 1, but expect 3 more over the next two weeks.
