The Wirlwind spell is good, although the spin speed is too slow mate. Try make it faster and damage ticks more frequent. Also some caster effect would be nice while whirling. Great stuff btw :)
I did it! With some help, I've got Psionic Shatter working. I just need to do the actors, and I'm set. The submission should be in tomorrow or Monday. :)
Shock Rifle ability combo (Unreal Tournament style) - Only Data Editor was used
Shock Core
-Fire an energy ball towards the mouse click location (it does no damage)
Shock Beam
-Fires a beam that damages the first target in front of your mouse click (the angle is determined by this point and the casters position)
-It still shoots if there's nothing in front
-Pushes the target away
Shock Combo
-If you manage to shoot the Shock Core with the Shock Beam (it takes skill) a huge explosion is created that blows units away then sucks them inside itself and kills them
I am quite impressed with a lot of these spells. Especially that many of them are done with only the data editor. I definitely want to look into how to do some of this with the data editor. Very nice :)
WOW! This contest is awesome. Voting is going to be so hard. There hasn't been a bad submission yet, all of these spells are cool in their own way.
So far though I think i'm most impressed with Depthsofchaos's Shock Rifle Ability. Not only does it look really cool, the spell animations themselves and watching those groups of units, especially the roaches, smash themselves into pieces, but i feel the Combo system makes it very unique. I really like how there's some micro involved with using the ability (also with Twinmold20's Power Matrix spell)
Keep up the amazing work everyone! I can't wait to see the other submissions. I'm expecting like 5 more from Slypoos haha
I'm quite impressiing with Slypoos, so much cool abilities.
I've make a ice cannon, which same as the frost nova, but can't make a ice model like that so have to change the color of target instead :D
I don't know why I'm entering because I can't compete with Hellzone Grenade, Shock Rifle, and Power Matrix, but here are two of my best spells, Chain and Purgatory.
There are a few more in there for fun but they won't turn any heads.
the marauders slow effect, the broodlords spawn broodling effect, the corrupter's corruption effect (from ages ago). I had an idea for something but I don't think I'll follow through. I have a better idea now.
It is so cool to see so many spells here that are totaly data editor driven! It is very encoruging for all of us to crack that sucker wide open because as we all know and are proving every day, the data editor is extremely powerfull and just about everything you can do with triggers you can do with it! Awsome stuff guys keep it up, and remeber if you feel up to it, post some tutorials on the tutorial forums/wiki list! Lets spread these hours and hours and hours of diffing around the data editor work ;) (Cause i've been there too lol)
Time to jump on the bandwagon myself. It's the first SC2 spell I've done ever, actually. Nothing too fancy because it took a while to get used to the data editor. I'll try to develop a few more concepts before the deadline or I'll never be able to keep up with the general quality.

The Colossus overloads its shield generators, creating a blast that knocks nearby enemies back and damages them. Afterwards, a residual static field remains for a few seconds, slowing enemies in it. Completely drains shields upon use.
The reflective shield reflects all incoming enemy projectiles, mirroring the relative angle (plus minus a little randomness). The distance travelled after reflection is part of a random command.
This is my final submission to the contest but i will most probably make a new map utilizing this ability.. removing all random angle commands and adding the ability to reflect your own shots.. i tested this and its great :P
You should remove the facing for the rock..thingy.. that way it looks just a bit better.. other than that, the ability looks good :P
PS:
IF you are not TOO curious, i would like to ask not to browse the map in the map editor, especially non-mapmakers will be astounded how workaroundish this works :P
PS2:
This ability is not "ability editor only" but makes use of other things that might be interesting for map makers, things like flipping actors, "clever" use of scaling or relative angles.
The mass discharge sounds interesting but the movie provided doesnt show the capabilities of the ability :(
Well, it was only meant to display the basic functionality. The idea for usability is to keep the colossi from getting surrounded and to help micro them. Very useful against close range units, for escaping and preventing the enemy from surrounding your main army (should work very nicely with cliffs/blockers on both sides).
Oh, the Reflective Shield looks very well executed (I'll take your advice and not read the "hack").
Hmm, the second time around it was a ton easier to navigate the data editor, so I expanded my horizons to weapons and units as well.
Contest entry: Unbound Wrath
Transforms the High Templar to a being of pure energy that attacks nearby enemy units. After a few seconds, the unbound explodes, dealing damage to all units within close proximity.
I was going to add more animations, but the archon looks so bloody hilarious that I left it like that.
Basically, apart from eye candy this is supposed to be a very good crowd control spell. No one in their right mind would stay in the area after the unbound goes berserk. Just don't blow your own units up!
I have done a slight modification to my ability power matrix. It now has a max range limit of 9 and it will now also deal less damage the further the two sentrys are from each other, if the distance is 0.0 than it will deal 4.5 damage each tick, if the distance is 9.0 than it will deal 0.5 damage every tick. I have also fixed the issue where the sentrys would run away when hit. You are fully welcome to try it out.
gh0st00, I like your effect, but I'm curious - the marauder's attack normally doesn't splash but in that video the reflected projectiles are doing splash damage. Does your shield spell reflect ALL projectiles and you just modified the marauders attack, or does it only reflect that one particular projectile?
kii064, is the orbiting path done via triggers, or via data editor?

The orbiting effect is a custom trigger script I believe. Maybe the guy wants to keep it secret.

@Kollabus:
I could increase the spin speed, the damage ticks however is like once every 0.1 seconds lol, it just doesn't do a lot of damage.
Spell Contest Submission - Frost Nova
Sends out a wave of frost to slow enemy units for 5 seconds
This Spell was done completely through the use of the data editor, triggers were not used in any way.

Note: It's a longer video because i wanted to show the the frostbite/frozen animation scaled to unit size

I can't make videos, if somebody wants to make one for me that would be awesome.
Pretty cool stuff here... but be prepared to be blown away. I call this the "weed whacker."
(Do I have to attach a map file with the ability? Or does this suffice?)
