Since the Clock and Cinematic Contests were a great success, we decided to start a new one. This time we want to feature the creation and customization of Spells within the GalaxyEditor.
Entries may be submitted here. You may also upload your map to our Map Database. Good luck and happy mapping!
What to do?
You can use the GalaxyEditor or anything available to you to create your own Unit Spells. That means you can use either the Data Editor, the Trigger Editor, or both. These spells can be applied to units, heroes, mob, anything you like! We just want to see the coolest (may not necessarily be the most useful) spell out there. Remember, we want to further knowledge within GE, so use your imagination and use your creativity!
Deadlines
You have 7 days to complete this contest, and then during one day a poll will be launched for you to vote and elect the winners!
End of the submissions: Wednesday, June 16th - Midnight PDT (Los Angeles) [Thursday, June 17th - 9 AM GMT (Paris)]
End of the votes: 3 days later
Reward
The main goal of the contest is to further community development within GalaxyEdit. The rewards can be see as follows:
This ability is made entirely in the Data Editor, there are no triggers. When cast, an area of units randomly receive positive or negative charges. After 10 seconds, if any units are within range of their polar opposite (positive is next to negative) the charges will explode with electricity dealing damage to each other and all nearby units.
You might recognize this mechanic from Naxx in WoW. :)
Can you have multiple submissions but only one can win?
You can have multiple submissions and multiple can win. Just note that you won't get 2 months if you make 2 submissions :)
Also, there will be a special mention for trigger-less spells. The actors and validators can be used to make awesome things and it is far more reliable on a heavy project and could be more optimized. If you never tried to write one without triggers, it's a good time to discover that huge feature of the Galaxy Editor.
I like this contest because it starts to place authors in the mindset that you should use the Data Editor when possible. I noticed that things that happen through the Data Editor (such as Actor Events) are subjected to less latency. For some reason, there's a tendency for a budding map author to master the trigger editor and consider the Data Editor as an extremely advanced tool and, if we manage to get rid of this opinion, we will see an increase in the quality of maps and maps lagging less.
Anyway, I've got some juicy abilities coming up soon.
As with the first spell, Shocking Grasp is done entirely in the data editor.
The ability is cast on one target, who is paralyzed by electricity for 5 seconds and takes damage over time. Any units that get too close to the target will also become paralyzed for 5 seconds. This can set off a chain reaction. A unit can't be affected by the same Shocking Grasp twice. Players will want to keep their units out of range of any unit under the influence of Shocking Grasp.
Causes the caster to enter a state of slowed time. While in this state the caster takes triple damage.
Upon exiting slowed time the caster enters a state of accelerated time. The ammount the caster is accelerated is based on how long the caster reamined in the slowed time state. The caster also recieves a bonus to damage and damage resistance.
The caster does not regenerate shields while in any altered time state.
A PATCH BROKE THIS ABILITYAs far as I can tell the Ghost 'weapon' needs to be set. Not sure why the marines and one of the bots don't attack, didn't really look too much.
Entirely done in data editor. This uses the Carrier's ability to have a nonselectable party follow your hero around. They will attack whatever your hero attacks and remain near your hero at all times.

Would it have to be able to be visible on the units command card or can you make the ability soloely through Key Pressed events and triggers?
You can make command card buttons activate triggers so it shouldn't be a problem.
Nice idea for a Contest, hope we will see mass awesome stuff.
This sounds fun, I not sure though I could stand up against some of these grand map makers with my abilities!
Now... what would make an awesome ability?
Can you have multiple submissions but only one can win?

Remakes of SC1 abilities aren't very orignial... =) Will they get some mali or does creativity doesn't count?

Sure! Whatever floats your boat. Though, each separate spell should be treated as one submission.
Nice work so far guys, i'm impressed, :).
Question: is it allowed to have each separate spell in the same map?
