I refuse to be discouraged by the competition!!! Never mind the fact that my Galaxy editor experience can be summed up to a total of 3 spells... Anyway, I added missiles and movers to my repertoire and here's what I came up with:
Spell Contest Entry: Power Overwhelming
The templar unleashes a massive amount of power, destroying itself in the process. Any enemy units caught in the discharge take devastating amounts of damage. If a templar is struck by either of the two types of blast, it will discharge as well, triggering a chain reaction.
No triggers were harmed in this production, only the data editor.
So I spent a great deal of time today working on an old classic: Magic Missile!
The only trigger involved is using a key to fire it off. I even show how overpowered it could be with no cooldown. :P I'll likely continue to play with the movers, but I am moving on for now!
kii064, is the orbiting path done via triggers, or via data editor?
It's done by triggers. By grabbing the casting unit's location and having a variable that increases the "degree" of the orbit, I do some math to calculate where to set the position of the asteroid every x seconds. I could probably do it in the editor now but at that time I didn't know much about doing complex stuff with the editor.

I can imagine DBZ maps where players can now rapidly fire energy balls at their opponents, instead of using super moves all the time...
I'll give it a try. my graphics card is quite crap actually (256mb *cries*), and I would have to install fraps or something and I've never used one of those. I will be back later with my failure or a video.
Edit: I've made a video but it turns out my upload is painfully slow. I invite anyone who is willing to help me out here.

Christ, how they hell do you people work some of this out? Its amazing to do this only through the data editor. It makes my own maps and spells look infintile. I may even just quit editing because of this. Ha!
Can anyone help me with combo abilities?
First ability is a Chain that ties one unit to another, units can't run in different directions becuz of that chain, so its like a hold spell, and other one that allows you to drag the other unit

Yes, yes, the name I did not pick just to fit the description.
This is going to be my final entry in the spell contest as I don't have time to develop another concept before the deadline.
I thought you said no cute zerglings were harmed in the making of this video :D

The contest is now over :)
I will setup the votes during the day. Thanks for all the wonderful submissions!
Bugger. I thought I had plenty of time left. oh well.
EDIT: Decided to upload my map anyway. I don't really care about the prizes I just want to show off what I can do. http://www.sc2mapster.com/maps/release-swarm-spell-contest/
