LotR stands for Lord of the Rings btw if you didn't know. These maps were pretty damn fun back in the day when there were a good number out. Curious to see if anyone is interested in those types of map for SC2 or if there are any threads that relate to those type of maps. I'm talking like the SC1 styles with a few hero units that were jacked up. You had to OP bases and defend those OPs. Some of my favorite back in the day were first age maps and 2nd age maps with awesome terrain that matched the actual LotR maps. I think a Helm's Deep map or a Pelennor Fields battle map would be cool as well as other LotR battles remade as custom maps.
Oh i wasn't talking about importing WC3 units to make a LotR map. Was talking about making one similar to the LotR maps back during SC Brood War. Thanks for the reply. Personally I didn't really enjoy the WC3 LotR maps besides the helms deep and minas tirith ones. I'm working on figuring out how to make elaborate but playable terrain on the SC2 editor now so hopefully in a few weeks I can have an outline of map terrain then slowly learn triggers units data etc on this new SC2 editor and make a simple but fun LotR base map
There might be problem with all these models. I think that map can contain about 20-30 of wc3 units.
However I enjoyed all LotR maps back in wc3. They were a big part of my childhood i could say :)
Oh fuck yeah. The old Silmarillion map was AWESOME. I played that as much as I played the actual campaign.
And gs; could you give a more detailed explanation about what those SC:BW 'LOTR maps' actually meant? As you can see, some of us remember LOTR maps from Warcraft 3 rather than Starcraft.
I think I'm gonna start a project to remake Middle Earth v Pre-LotR, definitely spent far more time on that map than anything else in BW. This editor has a lot to learn though, and I dont have time like I used to :)
I used to maintain one or two of the maps I think you're talking about as {WC}Fingon along with {Melkor} (or something like that) they took up an immense amount of our time, and sadly that is something I no longer have. I would love to see these types of maps resurface I got a lot of enjoyment out of working and playing on them. please keep us posted if you do decide to do this!

I think what he meant was the original LoTR maps made for starcraft. they were what (I can only assume) the WC3 maps were based off of. Only with more units and from what I can remember less lag. The maps are basically the same 1. build a castle 2. get troops from said castle 3. fight 4. enjoy.
Word TrainWreck03. A LotR map in SC Brood War was this: You choose a nation of middle-earth and went to war. It was very similar to regular SC in the way you won except besides killing all their units/bases you just had to kill either specific buildings or units. I'll use Gondor as an example of a nation. Gondor's main capitol is Minas Tirith. Its other provinces were Osgiliath, Dol Amroth, Pelargir, etc. Capitols and Provinces spawn units on a timer. You built "castles" (most often academis, hatcheries, and nexus (nexi? lol)) to spawn better units. Each province have specific heroes or hero who ruled it. In SC BW they were jacked up hero units in the campaign editor. I mean jacked up like did 1000-3000 dmg depending the unit. You used these units to strategically take out provinces/spawns. Could do that simply by rushing it(heroes had incredible amounts of health and armor so they could take hits from defensive structures that did 1000 dmg easily), setting up defiler clouds to cover them from towers/ranged heroes, and psi disruptor to take out defenses to make a rush easier. There were probably other ways too but those are what i remember the most. To make moving of huge armies easier and massing them easier there usually were 2 arbitors per team that could free recall. Of course there were differences in each LotR map. Some maps had automated battle triggers which would set up a battle that took place in the book (i.e. Helm's Deep, Pelennor Fields, Unnumbered Tears, etc) and they played in order on a timer.
If i missed anything it was probably a more specific detail of these maps, but that wall of text (CRITICAL HIT) pretty much summed those maps up. I really enjoyed them and the strategies in them.
I was indeed talking about Melkor{WC}'s map :) (Pre-LotR) He gave me an unlocked version towards the end of his SC days (we also made a 2nd age map together at one point) and I imported the terrain to SC2 and have worked on it to fit in with SC2.
I'm essentially done with terrain and base design, now I just have to create all the units and then the triggers to make the map work. If my workplace keeps at its current space I should be able to spend a lot of time on it, so hopefully I'll have something playable within a couple weeks to begin the balance work. And I really have to find a way to bring back Dark Swarm and Disruption Web.
gs9889 you got most of the major points right, though I prefer the maps where units can be the different between victory or success as well :)
That's real tight Diablito. If you need testers I'm definitely interested. I agree I liked the maps where regular army units played a big part too, but unfortunately i never really found that many lotrish maps out like that haha
Ill test though whenever I joined a helms deep I had no idea what to do and was flamed xD. But to give a suggestion how about giving those uber heros actual abilities. Since I've only finished The Hobbit and The first of 3 books (who's name I cannot recall) so I don't know to much besides that Helm's deep is a chapter where apparantly a battle occurs :p.
Edit: Also can you through down a project page so we can get a download it and check out the terrain
that's sweet, i had no idea you could import old SC maps, too bad my old comp got junked a few years back. i used to have almost all of the lotr maps unlocked.
It only imports the terrain. For Pre it worked great, I only had to do a little tweaking. I saw the conversion of another map and it probably would have been easier to start from scratch rather than the conversion.
Hey just wanted to let you know that I'm working on bringing Helms Deep to SC2. The terrain is done for the most part I'm working on a lot of unit balance and triggering right now.
i'm glad someone is finally making these i've been hoping someone would, the best maps from warcraft 3 and starcraft were the lotr ones, in warcraft 3 ring wars and war of the jewels were among the best maps out.
I have started a terrain for helms deep, its to late to post a pic right now, but if i remember i will post one tomorrow, it was my very first map ever and all ive done was a bit of terrain... I think everyhting looks nice, but all teh doodads ive placed units can walk through them... massive fail on my part, still learnen the editor :p
I LOVED the original SC lotr maps. Starting with LA (and that remained my favorite always) other than that FotDL was my favorite, I didn't like the mass switch over to corsairs and very tanky arbiters.
I was considering making a straight LA port over the summer.
Good to know that people are working on LotR style maps though, is anyone near completion?
I've got 6 out of 8 players almost complete, ironing bugs out of castle counting (and spawning) trigger right now and then players should be fully playable (though I haven't made or found a substitute for reaver yet). Upgrades are yet to come as well.
I'm also working on an LotR-style map, an adaptation of The Rings of Power from Brood War. This map is also nearly complete, and will be ready for beta-testing in a day or two.

Fun thread to randomly come across :) < Melkor{WC}
