I will be attempting to remake/make my own version of LotR Last Alliance that was in SC1. I am working on the terrain right now, and hope to make it similar to the original, while adding many much needed fixes.
I don't expect this to be done anytime soon as just making the terrain takes quite some time. (I would import the terrain from SC1, but I tried that and the terrain just isn't quite right.... also the dimensions work differently so the map doesn't quite fit the same way)
I will put up a page in the future when more is done. I am not sure if anyone is remaking the map already, but I'm still going to give it a shot.
Yeah, most of the old LotR maps aren't going to convert right. Corroborating with other mapmakers, we have decided this has to do with some of the third-party utilities that were used to make some of the SC1 maps. I also attempted to rebuild my terrain using the old map as a reference, and it didn't come out quite right due to the conversion from the 2D plane to 3D. Some areas are too large and others are squished.
For my terrain I basically got a decent map of middle earth online, then opened a 256x256 map in the editor. Then I turned on the grid, and counted how many squares there were, and made a grid on the middle earth map to match.
Then printed out the map and I am now going square by square trying to make the terrain. Its very tedious but I think it will work out in the long run. It obviously won't be a perfect match or anything, but I am getting it as close as I can.
Unfortunately, I've never been very good at terrain. The original terrain was designed entirely by the person I made the map with, and he did an excellent job of creating an intricate terrain based upon multiple maps of Middle-earth, and then he fudged the design a bit to make the map more fun to play.
However, I'm not a visual-design sort of person, and I didn't even realize I could turn on the small grid until I had half the map already laid-out. ;)
I've fixed a few bad inconsistencies, but for most terrain-based revisions, I will probably try to find someone else to offer assistance.
Making it as similar as possible, however as there isn't fixed build places I've put one of each command center down, same layout, big scary monster in the middle to start. Different buildings will get you different heros (Looking for some to download to save me time :D)
Killing units will get you money of course, no supply limit. I've also put bacically an unlimited supply of Vespene + Minerals as you can't get farms etc to get money.
I'm no-where near finished but I'll post in here when I have a beta ready and playable :)
I was one of the contributors of the popular map "Middle Earth Emerald." I also made the maps "Middle Earth the Elder Days" and also a "Silmarillion" Map.
I thought about making a middle earth map for SC2 but instead made my own universe that has similarities to Middle Earth maps but is more complex:

I don't have a page set up yet, but I've published a beta for Pre and opened a thread. The thread is:

Hi everyone, joined this forum today to send in some replies.
DEFINITELY DO THIS. I was so excited to see this map. I've been ACHING for WC3 LOTR maps..
I'm working on building a Ringwars style map.

I've uploaded the map so far. It needs beta testing to balance the prices of buildings etc, also there are no heroes yet.
Anyone that remembers the old map try mine out and tell me if I've forgotten anything from the BFME version!
