I agree with everyone else here, in that I felt a bit let down when seeing that first video after reading the hype machine in the news here. It just seems like a glorified hero arena, which is fine. However, as a player of maps who understands the mapmaking side of things, I like where the gameplay aspect is headed and I think it will be something new and refreshing.
The heroes in the videos released look really well thought-out and designed, and everything looks nice. And that's important. As a player of maps and a mapmaker at the same time, I want good maps to succeed, and while you may say that this map and Smashcraft are totally different, I disagree with that. If I'm going to play a hero arena, I don't care about the little intricacies that separate two maps in the same genre from one another. You're making a hero arena. Smashcraft is a hero arena. Nothing else needs to be said, because like I said, if I want to play a hero arena, I'm going to pick one over the other. I'm not going to play a game of this and then feel like doing something else and go play Smashcraft, no matter what the differences in gameplay are; essentially, the maps are built around the same principles with different ways of achieving them. I will get my Arena fix from one of the two maps, whichever one entertains me more.
That being said, you guys have an opportunity to succeed where Mephs (in my opinion) failed. I don't want to sound like I'm bashing Smashcraft because Mephs is a good editor, but that's just the way it is going to be. Mephs had a great map when he first released it. It was simple enough that newcomers could grasp the idea of it after a few games, and the gameplay was fun. Then shortly after he started listening to the wrong people and making stupid decisions. Adding a rating system and having two game modes, Ranked vs. Unranked, which split the map popularity and it never recovered. Listening to elitist WoW Arena morons and adding more elements to the gameplay that were unnecessary and confusing to newcomers. The list goes on, but those were the main issues.
A map can't succeed without a good community to support it, and Smashcraft failed in that department and it's not going to recover. This map has an opportunity to go where Smashcraft did not and I hope it does, because there's a lot of room for a Hero Arena that's well-done on the custom games list and in the desires of gamers.
If a map is popular and successful, then it was worth the hype. Just because it doesn't involve "impressive" things that the mappers at this community expect doesn't mean it wasn't worth it or that it's not good. If this map turns out to be fun and successful, it was worth it and you can laugh in the faces of everyone here. You guys just haven't given us enough information - and the map hasn't been played publicly yet. Furthermore, you can be the best coders and the most creative mappers ever but if you handle the map the wrong way after it's released, it can go downhill just as fast as it went up.
Good luck and I'll definitely be trying it out with some friends as soon as it's released. :)

Couple things:
Unranked is the "main" pub mode. You don't have to play ranked (you haven't for a while).
2.0 fixed a lot of "noob unfriendliness".
Not sure when the last time you played was but the game has evolved quite a bit.
Also the community is far from "dead" ;P, it's picked up significantly since 2.0. Cheers

Smashcraft was a 1st page staple when it was released, even after the map popularity system was changed. It's stuck on the third page now. It doesn't have the player base that it used to, maybe because it's no longer a new commodity that everyone wants to try out, but I still think the main reason for that is the map changed a lot for the worse when it's popularity was at its peak.
I'm glad it's recovering now though as I really loved the map, but I stopped playing because I didn't like the direction it was going. I hope it continues to get better :)

It dropped after they changed how pop was calculated, it never really got back up to page 1 after that, the community has and always will be niche. There's been a lot of reforms and additions like Practice/Tutorial modes, EX Abils, and honestly while the ranking system is there you aren't forced to play Ranked since the main "pub" map is the unranked version. Ranked games tend to only be in-house at this point.
Anyway just clarifying, this is the TOFU thread. If you want to continue discussing it feel free to bump the Smash topic :)
I was happy to hear from the creators but it seems like they either have a lot of problems with updates breaking their map or they forget to keep updating us. Every time this happens I lose interest and usually go back to melee games.

I still hope it comes out just so it can knock sotis down. This is more traditional dota compared to smashcraft so more people would be willing to pick it up. Is 40 items and 18 heroes that much? Look at LoL.

The refinements I have been doing over the last couple of weeks, all that extra polish, is the stuff that is going to make people hopefully go wow. You guys always complain about having unfinished and unpolished maps released, I guess in a way you can be grateful that we are not Blizzard and we are keeping you guys informed about what is happening. :)
Blizzard Dota was announced nearly a year ago, and that was the last thing heard :) Though, it wouldn't surprise me if they had seen what we had done with Tofu (by being naughty and playing the locked maps on our accounts) and be like ... stuff that ... we can't compete ... we'll just give up now and hope people forget about Blizzard Dota .... ah ... lol.
So it is coming, the official release date is in twice the time it takes me to complete half the work remaining. :)
Wooooow dude, you are cocky as shi*! "I'm sure Blizzard gave up on their map because mine is so awesome". Um, I doubt that.
On a positive note, this looks EPIC and AMAZING and I can't wait for the release! But seriously, could be a bit more modest? Your arrogance is kind of irritating at times.
You know it hasn't been that long for blizzard dota. Maybe 9 months or so, wait isn't that about how long this has taken. The video is what two months old so that's 11 months. You guys are about on par with blizzard. I'm just saying don't go hating on someone, I'm not trying to bring down the map. Also blizzard has custom models and all that in the works for us along with custom UI probably. So this is getting some attention not to mention working on HotS. A year for blizzard dota is good time imo.

I honestly hope this was a joke. . . otherwise you are the most asinine individual I have ever met on this site.
When Blizzard announced their DOTA map, they showcased a considerable amount more than you have with Tofu. Custom models, a sexy map and all in a format people could actual tolerate watching. Since then, they haven't said anything because they know they can't. There are currently 4-5 DOTA maps being made by competing companies. If they say "yeah we have this and that" other companies are going to compare notes. Has Valve shown us anything about DOTA 2? How long has it been? Oh yeah, that's right, they just have some blog with a couple of news posts.
As far as Blizzard communicating with their players. . . um. . . hello? How many other companies are as dedicated to updating their game as many as 4 times in a month JUST because the players are saying "Yo, this is broke, fix it dawg!"? They may not tell us what they are doing all the time or when things are coming exactly, but they go out of their way to make sure we know that they are aware of the concerns and are at least trying to remedy them.
I will be the first to say that they failed horribly with B.Net 2.0, but I won't deny in the slightest that since then, they have bent over backwards trying to cram as many fixes in as time will allow. Just look at the editor you're using. That, alone, is proof of the standard of excellence Blizzard expects of their products. They do their very best to released polished material.
Implying that you are better than Blizzard because you spend the time to polish your map is ridiculous. Have you watched anything about HotS?
Totally agree. And has he forgotten that what he is using to make his map is BLIZZARD'S program?
Oh yeah Dogmai, not a rip on your map at all. It does look totally awesome, but you must keep it in perspective. It is a MAP, not a game. It is still StarCraft, no matter how much you don't want it to be. Do not act like you are top shi* when you are probably more like middle/top/average shi*. Catch my drift? You have made an awesome map that anyone could make in time. Modesty = Awesome Feedback, Cockiness = "You suck".
That being said, once again, this is an awesome map. You don't need a map adjustment, you need an attitude adjustment.
Blizzard recently said they basically scrapped a big portion what they had of Blizzard All-Stars and started from scratch on a lot of stuff (but didn't give reasons as to why - however, from what I saw of the map at Blizzcon, it definitely needed a lot of changes) and that it's scheduled to come out around the same time as HotS.
I do think they realized they didn't quite have the product they needed to really get people's attention, but it had nothing to do with this map.
Honestly all the custom games right now suck so much ass and I want this map to be out there for the sake of playing something new. I think a lot of people would feel that way.
You took me seriously? I don't know what to say, I have just been sitting here laughing my ass off, the best responses I ever had to a post and I wasn't even trolling on purpose. Go me.
A week or two goes by in no time anyways :)
First impressions count alot, so just release it when you truly think it's ready.
Here's my two cents.

yeah i think interest is starting to fade lol
40 items 18 heroes?? god dam
took 9 month to make , and its gonna take 9 month to learn... screw it..
GL any ways it looks good :)
lol dont worry this map won't ever come out

I would think they would want to prove all the spamming in this forum wrong..
So it should come out :)
Dota?
wat?
It is actually getting pretty close to release.
