Hello, I don't know much about modding, but I think people here are very helpful and skillful, so maybe you can help.
I have a 3D printer at work, and I would like to try and print some units from Starcraft2, because I like the game a lot.
I have access to Maya and 3DS max 2013 64 bit and Blender 2.67 too, and I've been trying to use m3 importer for 3DS which didn't work at all.
Then I tried Blender m3addon, and it worked quite well, but I don't know how to use the textures, since I only use 3D modelling for engineering purposes in AutoCAD.
In short I would like people to help me get few original SC2 models to the point where I can work on them with Maya and adjust them for printing (if a character has a long gun barrel pointed forward for example, you cannot print this, you have to tilt it upwards) and help me to get UV textures in PNG format for the models.
For the people who are willing to help I can print any model you like as my gratitude, if it's suitable for printing.
Feel free to PM me for more details.
Cheers!
Hey guys, I have gotten no replies, so maybe I didn't explain too well what I need, because it should be very easy, and I think most of the people here have the files I need already on their computer and they can just send them to me.
I need the original models and textures from SC2 for:
-Marine
-Marauder
-Banshee
-Thor
-Kerrigen as ghost (which I already found here, someone made but it's in m3 format, and I can't work with it)
-Raynor in marine suit
-Zergling
-Mutalisk
-Hydralisk
-Brood lord + Broodling
-Queen
-Overseer
I need the models in any format I can open natively in 3DS 2013, preferably X3D, and textures as PNG files.
I would be very grateful if you have one or more of these models and send them to me.
I would do it myself, but I don't have 3DS 2010 and I don't know how to work with blender.
Thanks again.
I dont see what this has to do with textures? If you're going to print them out using a 3d printer, I hope you realize that you wont get the texture out as well.
The color of your printed model will vary depending on the color of the plastic you're using.
Also, can't you just open the editor and export the models and textures you want?
@ Leruster:
Yes I know how to read, I'm asking someone with previous versions of 3DS that can use the plugin to send me files in a format 3DS 2013 or Maya 2013 can open, with textures.
Like obj files, or X3D files, etc.
@Siretu:
I'm talking about a professional Z-corp 3D printer which can print in full color based on textures in PNG/TGA format, actually the same printer model as in this video:
This is not one the plastic toys sold for home use.
Edit:
I don't know how to use the editor to export models and textures and what formats it can exports, can you direct me to guide of some sort?
Hey, that's very cool. I didn't know that. Thanks for the link.
Exporting models and textures is rather simple when you know how to do it. You just have to open the data editor, open the models tab, pick a random model (doesn't have to be the one you want) and open the Model: Models field.
You want to get to the huge list where you can pick a model. In this list, you can scroll to the model you want and right-click and press export.
For the textures you do the same thing, but you have to open the image list. So do the same thing but open the button tab instead of the models tab.
I'm not sure which format the textures are in, but the models are in .m3, which might be a problem for you if you cant open .m3.
Well yes, that is the problem.
I already got the m3 files extracted (in a bit more time consuming way though), but I can't work with them.
Maybe if I explain what I've been trying so far you can help me to do it by myself.
First I tried to locate the models and the textures I need using Ladik's MPQ editor, which took me quite a while.
I extracted for example Banshee.m3 and bunch of .dds files (banshee_diffuse.dds I think is the one I need).
I used Blender 2.67 and m3addon to import the model. I deleted the armature object and left only the mesh object.
I exported as .obj file and got Banshee.obj and Banshee.mtl
I converted the .dds files into PNG using free online converter.
I imported the .obj file into 3DS 2013, and it opened fine, but I cannot seem to apply the textures correctly, so I think something went wrong with the mapping.
I'm trying to drag the texture onto the model, or click apply to scene, and nothing happens.
When I import the .obj file into 3DS 2013, there's a dialog about importing materials, like here:
And if I choose the right prefix it puts the material in the library and when I apply it to the model it looks more or less right, like this:
Now I have it in the right format with the textures and I will try to adjust it for printing and let you know how it turned out.
It took me 2 days, but I think I figured it out on my own.
I will upload pictures of the printed units if all goes well in couple of weeks.
Well, from what I see, you said:
"I have access to Maya and 3DS max 2013 64 bit and Blender 2.67 too, and I've been trying to use m3 importer for 3DS which didn't work at all."
But that's just me being picky ;)
3dsmax supports .dds textures so you don't have to bother with that. Unless you want to use the same files for the 3D printing, in that case I don't know :)
Try to get the mesh a bit denser and apply the normals for displace deformations. May look even better after printing but only if you tesselate the mesh really hard.
@:Leruster. Yes, I tried anyway to see if it works for certain models.
The 3D printer needs textures in PNG or TGA format.
Nothing in the last 2 sentenced made any sense to me since I've never dealt with these kind of models and software before :)
