There are many threads and tutorials here and elsewhere about doing this but just about all of them are 5-6 years old and none of them work anymore.
The wow model viewer can no longer export to .m3 format.
the plugins/scripts/extensions for 3dsMax and blender to convert .FBX files to .m3 don't work either (none of the ones I've found).
Someone must know how to do this and I'm pleading for an explanation or link to a tutorial.
So you have 3DS Max 2011 with the ArtTools or something equivalent to export to M3?
If yes, the import scripts on m2 should still work because I still use them, I did change it to facilitate some things but other than that ...
So in the WoW Model viewer, save the m2 ( right click and select save) AND skin file. You need them both.
Export as obj gives you the main textures. I mean main because textures on particle emitters need to be extracted seperatly.
Import m2 and skin via m2 import script in max.
Now I know there are issues with the main character models, but all creature models and doodads should work
I ran into the same issue. The latest version of wowmodelviewer does not have m2 export. and the older versions that do only work with the old MPQ data from wow and not the new CASC version, so unless you already have the old MPQ versions downloaded... your SOL.
Hope someone can make a tutorial on importing using FBX with animations or the wowmodelviewer guy puts back in m3/m2 export.
btw for anyone interested in porting WoW Models to SC2, I'd recommend creating an account and posting on the forum for WoWModelViewer since it hasn't had m3 export support for a while. I created a thread here https://wowmodelviewer.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=2018
The more posts and request for it, the more likely we can get m3 export back
