With the release of my War3 Mod, it's inevitably that some Chinese modder started to do the DotA with it.
They also made some advertise on the media sites that they would 'publish a demo on June' - which I see as a bit over-confidence due to they are orginally war3 editor users who just turned to SC2.
Now their main authur contacted me and started to throw tons of editor questions to me. I answered them and also provided some scripts to him
But in the mean time, I can't help to wonder if it is ever allowed to copy dota into sc2. One hand it would definately stim the community if they can get it done, on the other hand, they could run into copy right issue.
They seems to content with that and claimed 'they would be no issues', but I really don't know.
Does anyone here know the definate information about if you are allowed to do it or not?
Thats definitely a "Child's Play" to copy your own mod into theirs. Just PM me with his Details (the Modder), and I'll spam him ASAP, Even I probably have to reverse the situation on my side and prevent the Copyright Scheme. Reverse the Gameplay, especially the Mechanics and the Creeps. If I were to develop a Mod or Map, I'd flip the map (Just a suggestion) sideways. lol
I don't think copywriting would be an issues with valve (though idk if you want them stealing your mod)
if the new DOTA (the one by valve) was deemed different enough form the original wc3 dota that no copyright could be filed by bliz, then Id say they are different enough for that to be true in reverse- copying the old dota cant be copy wrighting the new dota because in saying that they are too similar, they would also have to say that their own game was similar to the original dota, too dangerous for some small arcade modder.
Well, my mod is a public and open-sourced mod so you can use them to create any map you want.
But in the mean time I'm also NOT ok if they want to 'steal' my mod by claim everything is their orignal creation - They did showed these kind of signs while doing advertise on the media sites, and I've already sent some message to them about that, and I would see if they would change their statement accordingly.
Even though I still want to check if it is ok to do DotA in SC2, since there will be more people start to create dota or dota-like maps.
"The Dota Marks may only be used in conjunction with user-created maps created with Blizzard’s World Editor tool and designed to be used in conjunction with WarCraft III and StarCraft II."
It's legal, with a few small caveats. "Star Dota" is fine. "Dota Star" is not, for example. There's a few more, and they're all explained in that link.

To be clarify, people can bascialy do anything with my mod: directly set depend on it in you map, copying/using any part of data/script in your map, etc. I won't have any problem with that, instead I welcome that - it's the purpose of the mod!
Just do not declare that things in this mod are also your orignal creation, I think that's the baseline. Of course, you orignal part in your map is still your orignal work, I just refer to the part you used from the war3 mod(GA)
There will not be problems, DotA 2 is a bullshit clone of the first DotA, Blizzard has the Defence of the Ancients name and they can use the DotA name on every custom map on their games, for example on warcraft 3 and starcraft 2. Such Hype for this, even if 45 min games bored me so much years ago
But wont this dota also be a clone? I see don't see much more of a point in this recreated dota than in valve's dota 2 (or heros of newerth, for that matter). I generally dislike 1-to-1 clones of games (with some expection, like ports), and thats why I am trying to build a new Warcraft RTS game (call it 4, for now), instead of another Warcraft 3 remake of any sort, which contains new units, heros, mechanics, etc.
Its coming along...ok. Would love some help though.
