First I want to give some food for thought: Blizzard has stopped all development of the game, if you decided to do this your work would never be outdated. It will be the practice map that EVERYONE uses, until the end of time. I'll also totally pay you like 50 bucks on fiver.
I have no idea how to make a map, I have no idea how long it takes to make a good map so please delete this if this post is insulting.
What I do know is that all the practice maps on SC2 are long outdated and that myself and many other players would like an avenue to practice our micro and mechanics with todays units against something that isn't an AI.
These are my ideas for the map - (if anyone is interested and so map makers can get an idea of the time requirements it might meet)
I'd like it to have 2 optional modes, one where you have static buildings that produce units that explode-on-spawn and an SCV that you constantly have make depots, and upgrades etc etc. On a seperate part of the map there is a series of micro challenges, constantly going. Reaper vs 4 lings. then 10 marines vs 4 roaches, or w/e. Just something to keep your brain and eyes occupied and your fingers going through the motions of running a base in the mid game.
The second mode has the same micro challenges, but instead of the static buildings you have a normal base, on a normal part of the map. The idea is to practice build orders and building an economy and managing supply and expanding and blah blah, all while doing those ever increasing micro challenges.
Thoughts on the challenges: the micro is never going to be as intensive as pvp, thats ok. The fights just need to scale in size and number of types of units allowed to the player, to give players the practice adding units to different hotkeys. so maybe after a few small scale rounds you now have vikings vs colossus, or now you ravens to use, etc etc. Give a few seconds at the beginning of each round to add units to hot keys, and then it goes. The macro all continues behind it.
Also I NEED it to have a terran pov, please and thank you, other races optional(sorry P and Z).
I'd personally spend many hours on this map developing my mechanics and muscle memory, and would pay (on fiver) to a map developer willing to help me and the part of the community who yearns for training. Future generations of SC2 gamers would use the map too.
I would ofc be available to give feedback, test, anything you needed that a normie can handle.
Huh 🤔 even though there are still a lot of SC2 players? You'd think there'd be more demand & supply for this sort of thing. Did you actually ask in the Discord server? This forum has become a ghost town as I've just gathered.
I'm not sure if I'm your guy because I don't have much time to dedicate to it, but I enjoy dabbling in the editor, and, if it's not too much work, I'd be willing to do it. I've had some thoughts about your descriptions, but I'm not sure if I understand correctly. (It might have something to do with me being a Bronze league scrub.)
My take on it: The first practice mode would be very clinical, on both the macro and micro side. There is no intention to mimic a real base layout, so the different tasks, like making supply depots and starting upgrades, would be arranged next to each other, compactly, and there would be no ambiguity about what to do or in which order to do it. It might be like, "start this upgrade, then build a supply depot, then build this missile turret", from left to right. Then you go back to the micro, and when you go back to the macro you get a new set of tasks.
Is that roughly what you had in mind? Does what I wrote even make sense as a practice format?
What would be great is if you could name some existing maps/mods that are similar to what you're after, even if outdated, so I could check them out. I only know about the SALT mod, and some pure micro challenge maps (like Knalle Micro Map).
I am going to ask around on the discord and see if there is any interest, thank you for the idea.
As for your description, its close but not quite right. However, after looking at the Knalle Micro map. All I'd really need is the ability to build a base on a regular portion of the map, while playing the challenges. To practice macroing and build orders while fighting.
Hm, okay. I'm trying to understand the key difference between the two modes in your description. You wrote that newly trained units would explode, but what practical difference would that make? You wouldn't actually get to use the produced units in either mode (offensively anyway) since the micro challenges are a separate thing, otherwise we're talking about just a plain old melee match (with the ability to iterate quickly, which is what SALT is for). That's why I inferred that the macro in the first mode would be very simplified.
It does seem to me like only one mode is needed. But positioning your units defensively should be part of the exercises, as well as rallying IMO. Why leave those tasks out?
Sorry, I'm just confused as to where or why to draw the line between regular melee rules and simplification. If I understand correctly, the main goal is to accelerate practice compared to just playing actual games, and to focus on specific scenarios. But doesn't SALT cover both?
As I said, maybe I'm just not your guy. Good luck finding someone!
