I got some cool ideas.
I know the usual way this goes is I say something like "Zomg I have teh awsum ideaZ!11!!" and everyone ignores me (rightfully so).
So I will be brief and realistic.
I've always wanted to turn lots of campaign stuff into cool new units and structures, like a Primal Zerg hive as attack unit or the Xel 'Naga artifact as defense tower with the collectible artifact fragments as attack elements.
I also got an idea to make the economy not worker based but more like automated structures and you can improve your income by upgrades.
Actually, I also want to change something about unit production, maybe centralizing it more.
And some more ideas like warping in buildings like Gate units or more units and structures with different modes for different situations (like switch between defense mode and production mode for structures).
I cannot do it on my one and would be glad if someone would help.
I know it's a big idea but I am not asking for eternal devotion. Rather I'm asking for some help along the way (but of course I won't kick anyone out).
I also have not decided on much yet, so decision will be made as a group.
I'd suggest taking it one step of the way at a time. The sc2mapster community is only so big and I know a lot of the experts are pretty busy making their own hots maps right now. I know it's what everyone will tell you and I know it is very time consuming, but I think you should go through sc2mapster and find some good basic tutorials. You can also take on much smaller projects until you feel you have all the knowledge you need to make some of those things you mensioned. The things you mensioned would be a bit of a challenge for me, but for some of the data experts around here, this wouldn't be too hard, but as I said, they're probably all pretty busy.
If you think you can get a party of people to help you, good luck, I'm sure somebody may decide to help you.
My advice would be to pick one thing at a time then spam TheHelper forums to get help for it. If they haven't kicked out MissKerrigan than they must not have a problem with 100+ new threads a day from one person.
Try some random tutorials just to get a basic understanding of the editor. Then try and do things on your own. Try is the key word here - If you don't succeed, ask for help (Please be specific). If you have many little, easy questions, the IRC is good place to get help - But give people some time to notice your messages! Sometimes people just don't check for a while. If for whatever reason you don't get any help there, be persistent :p Alternatively, if you are willing to wait a while for replies, post on the forums and/or message people willing to help.
And remember: The editor is a very specific tool. If you have a problem, be specific about it so that we can help. "My unit attacks but nothing happens" is far too vague and you'll end up wasting time on people asking you questions about the unit and weapon. "My unit attacks, but the missile won't launch. Here's all the relevant data: [screenshot of weapon, launch missile effect and all other relevant actors and effects]" is gonna get you an answer much sooner.
Good luck :)
