I don't have much time to attempt creating maps on top of YouTubing others' maps, but I've been thinking of an idea that could be pretty cool and not horribly time consuming. Taking SC1 and SC2 maps, then remixing them to create something new and unique out of familiar scenarios.
There doesn't need to be any sort of overarching plot, but my idea would be some 4th-wall breaking menace is attempting to disrupt Starcraft history in various ways while our protagonist is constantly one step behind trying to travel in time and correct the course of Starcraft's past. The plot should not be something that would restrict cool gameplay ideas though, it's meant to be lax, silly, and flexible.
I'd like to use this to break into mapmaking for a few reasons - like I said, I don't have much time on top of my job and current hobbies to devote, but these maps would use mostly pre-existing terrain (from Blizzard SC2 and Mass Recall SC1 with their permission) and some of the remixing could use existing community mods. For example, our villain heads to the end of Heart of the Swarm and turns all of Kerrigan and Raynor's units into their Brood War equivalents. Then the player must complete The Reckoning mission using Brood War tech with Brood War Raynor as an ally. Reprogramming Raynor's AI may be challenging, but otherwise, this map wouldn't be horribly challenging to create (I don't think).
What about playing as the Zerg invading Mar Sara in SC1 Rebel Yell? The time travelling villain has manipulated the Confederacy to actually support Mar Sara and your job is to successfully destroy their beefed up forces in order to force Jim Raynor to accept help from the Sons of Korhal and set Starcraft history back on track. The protagonist has powers of his own and maybe is able to supply the Zerg with units from the Left 2 Die mod, SC2, or something along those lines to even the odds. Your goal is to destroy an enormously defended Terran base using the terrain from Mission 3: Desperate Alliance that originally was the Terran holdout.
I'd love to hear other ideas like this and also wanted to open this up to others as maybe a community driven project where anyone could submit a map to be part of the project and the final product is an amalgamation of maps from various people. We would all have to follow some very loose standards to keep things like dialogue and quality consistent, but I think this could be a neat side project. I'm hopeful to hear other ideas - their are so many opportunities for differing types of gameplay and clever twists on existing SC lore!
