I'm posting over here on Malpheus' recommendation. He has claimed that you guys rock.
I am planning on asking my girlfriend to marry me soon. Things have been going really swell between the two of us and I believe we are finally getting to that point in our relationship "for the next step."
Being that we both play SC2 pretty heavily with our free time and love watching tournaments on the weekends, I thought that this would be an excellent medium to propose through. I was thinking of a single player small map that takes a hero unit through an RPG of sorts with some scripted events, where you have to fight zerg/zombies, and that somehow ends with you finding a ring that promises happiness and love and all that good stuff. I will write up better specifics when we enter discussions.
I tried my hand at doing this on my own, but I really want this to be perfect. I would like someone with some experience under their belt.
Expect there to be some major sappiness involved through all this. Also expect a good deal of cold hard cash to be involved!
Hmm, why don't you actually tell her?
Proposing through a game is kinda, bad for you...
Because it teaches you, you can do everything through game...
I understand you both play sc2...
But a project like this can be, maybe take months for even to get into fixing bug stages...
I agree that it would take months to do it right. What if the game you get sucks? What if she's hates it when she's playing it?
I understand that you're both nerdy and it would be funny, but people will (and do) ask you how you proposed for the rest of your life. My girlfriend and I were nerds, and we played WoW and Warcraft 3 together. Even so, I set up a bag of picnic food and a bottle of wine, set it up on the grass in view of the river and proposed the question after dinner. Even if you want to with a nerd joke for the proposal, you should do it at a time when you're both feeling happy and close.
So that being said, here's what you should do. Instead of commissioning a new game, you need to find a game that already exists that you like and you think she will like. Then the game needs to be modded to add in what you need. If you can get the author's permission, I'm sure someone here would be willing to help you tweak the game.

A 20 minute single player rpg would take months to get into testing stages? :O
I think that this can easily be made into a great "sort but sweet" experience, with lots of cinematic action, pro scene references and some personal touch would make it amazing. Someone who knows how to terrain properly + someone who knows how to design/Trigger/Data properly + someone who can provide with material for references/ideas/vision and this map could be done in a few weeks, probably less. Though I'm not a man for either of these tasks :D
Objective completed: Monorey rewarded Mavalous Diamond Ring
New Objective: Give Marvalous Diamond Ring to [Player 2]
I like it :) I could do it, but it would be a lot of pressure to do something that important. I will think about it. See if I get any ideas. For other games, go MineCraft :) Easy to dó a 10-20 min rpg.
Eheh, it's certainly a lot less work to pick an existing map and modify the storyline or ending ( many civilians doing the happy dance with fireworks and such? :) ).
What about you pick an existing map and ask the author if the changes you want can be made?

You know, I've been looking around for an existing map, and I can't seem to find one that really fits my intentions. I don't know, this just seems to be one of those situations where it might be easier to make from scratch.
WTF chick is going to sit through a shitty custom map RPG just to pop the damned question?
As for this, I plan on having a ring in real life. I also plan to be playing the map while sitting right next to her, the map will be a 2 player experience. Near the end of the story, I want to have a dialog come up that "pauses" the story while I ACTUALLY propose to her, looking into her eyes, and having what I want to say prepared in advance.
I know this whole thing is a bit different than the normal, but what I have in mind I know will be right up her alley.
dont want to be mean... just wanna help....
girls are girls.. no matter how nerdy they are... they want something to (brag/proud) about to their friends...something to remember....but a game...meh.... she would like it for sure but its still... umm... not something she would tell every friend she has...
just imagine her talking about How you proposed to her in front of all your wedding guest...
people wont understand how sweet it is... she would love it but peoples reaction or comments would destroy her...
its too small for a big ...event?... add more stuff... like a date after the game... dont propose in-game... propose with a ring, in a nice place, in a date or something...
just saying...
EDIT: Turn ur game into reality....
after making her play... try to do it in real life... like "Treasure Hunt"
and when she opens it... BAM! a fcking ring... lol

...she wants to have SC2 themed wedding cake topers...so, I think that might raise some questions too.
Look, I do plan on proposing in person. I will take her out, wine and dine her, and then go back to our newly renovated office and use the game as a trigger...a gift...a way for me to present all of our experiences together in a fun way; through some story telling and some co-op game play.
Thank you for taking the time to respond and the treasure hunt thing is a fun idea, but I am quiet undeterred from executing this ploy.
This is an awesome way to propose. Don't let the nay-sayers knock you down. Great story for the rest of your life. Although if you did the modding yourself, you'd get uber-points. If we're talking over $1k here, PM me. If not, you're probably not going to get anything of great quality. If it's just a scripted walk-thru on a map it'll take probably 20-40 hours to develop. If it's a full-blown game with custom assets it could take thousands of hours (and thousands of dollars worth of developers' time).

This, and let me add the warning that people ought to remain on-topic. Regardless of what you think about his way of proposing (for as far as you understand it), it's his choice and he isn't here to get insulted or yelled at. Either help him, toss out a relevant opinion that doesn't involve him being a terrible person or buzz off. It's not horrific so far, but I can see this going wrong and want to beat people to it.
I think it's a cute idea, and I'm certain that you know better than us what your girlfriend likes/doesn't like. I would be interested in helping you with your project, however I would need more details. I have sent you a PM and, if you like, you can reply to me here or at the e-mail I provided.
Honestly.... id give up on the custom "will you marry me" map........
its really not gonna be as great as you would imagine........ maybe its better if you do it yourself, but like you said you cant.
You want the moment you propose to be something special but at the same time something she can brag to her friends and family about ... generally that means through a video game is a non-starter.
Take my advice...........
Favorite restaurant, a fancy one
Nice cloths.... shave and wash yourself for once......
Pop the question when dessert comes.... have the waiter put the ring on her dessert plate......
possibly get a hotel somewhere nice with a jacuzzi in the room
Get the good kinda wine she likes
rent her favorite movie......
I once asked the girl I loved to marry me and I did it all wrong..... and I lost her because of it......
Sorry to say but looks like most of you do not know crap about women( that or you are either 14 yr olds or have girlfriends who would rather you buy them a purse) Speaking as a woman gamer myself this is a very cute and unique idea. Alot of time and effort would go into that game and she would know it and appreciate it.
Last christmas my husband had a custom hero made up with my name in my favorite online game we play. I can type in my code and be the only one to have "my hero" in game.On top of it he made the presentation of it sooo cute i will never forget it. It was so thoughtful and one of the best presents I got. Most people wouldn't understand how cool this would be unless you are a couple who truly enjoys playing together like us.
Tell her you want her to test this new game out .I would be behind her on one knee , ring in hand when it gets to that point in the game where she finds the ring:) If you can go months and keep the making of this a secret would be amazing to pull it off. Not all women like cheesy crap like whats been mentioned especially if she is a gamer. It doesnt matter if her friends and family like the "story" of how you proposed as long as she does. My family all knows how i like nerdy things and just laugh about it because thats who I am. Just the simple fact of the wedding topper she wants should give you the push to do this! I have actually seem some amazing sc2 themed cakes btw. You could really have alot of fun with this idea of yours go for it.
Also maybe you could contact the maker of your favorite custom game you guys play and see if he can put a special code or something in there for this purpose? I do mainly terrain on maps so not sure if its even possible but worth looking into.
I would love to reply to the breeding comment but refuse to FEED THE TROLL

Wow, thanks for the super fast replies guys. I appreciate your suggestions.
First off, this isn't something that needs to be done ASAP. A few months is ok by me. I'd rather have it done right rather than done hastily.
That said, modifying an existing game actually makes a great deal of sense. Does anyone have any recommended games that I might want to look at?

Fucking ask her to marry you. With a ring. IRL.

Just talk to her, bro. Or place Hydralisks in a "Will you marry me?" formation.

Fat chicks don't count as women so your opinion is moot.
