Hey im playing around with the idea of becoming a map reviewer, but im too intimidated to go and do video reviews.
Im posting this thread in the hopes someone will click out of interest and awnser a few questions so i can think about how i should get started.
How many people really think a video is essential to review a map?
If there were only text reviews, what would it take to keep your interest?
How many screenshots would you expect per map review?
Who would you most likely look at more, someone who posted videos, or someone who posts text reviews?
If someone had a funny accent, speech patern or something, but was still understandable, would you still watch their reviews?
Im not sure you`ll reach a big audience though. Thats if you are posting the reviews solely on Sc2 mapster only(A youtube channel in relation to Sc2mapster and/or the official battle.net forums would be good). You would also need to build "rep" if you want people to take your reviews seriously.
//// How many people really think a video is essential to review a map?////
Not essential, but probably the most effective option.

Good command of the English language. Layout/Presentation of the review is important. Keeping it simple, to the point and scoring on good criteria is a must.

Personally I would say 4 or 5. They should all count though and be assigned to specific sections. Like two pictures Could show the GUI perhaps, another two for the actual action/mechanics in motion, and one or two misc pictures showing the terrain or special effects.

Videos. Though it still depends somewhat on presentation and style.

Video reviews and tutorials are better in any way. But like you, I don't really want to do one. Text reviews are much much better if the pictures are in the thing and not just at the bottom. I'd say one picture per paragraph. Make sure you use nice colorful fonts and stuff to keep it nice looking.

I also prefer text reviews. I don't care to load up the whole video (which can take awhile if your ISP blows, as mine does). Videos are also too slow, as Karawasa said. Generally speaking, I find text reviews more professional. I think that people who do text reviews put more effort into their words, whereas a lot of videos irk me because many video reviewers seem to constantly insert random asides that aren't particularly enlightening or amusing.
With that said, if you posted a review where you failed to capitalize 'i', I would probably not read it.
