I wonder if there were any other people who didn't leave feedback because they didn't have much good thing to say and censoring themselves to be positive was more of an effort than what seemed feasible. I know I played a few bi-weekly maps but refrained from posting stream of consciousness because of not wanting to come off too hurtful.
The "Don't be an asshole" rule, is slightly annoying. I mean, even if someone is an asshole in their feedback - someone else can go clarify the points and go in more detail, catch and elaborate the train of thought. Discussion at the expense of hurting someones feels is more beneficial than nothing at all, no?
About authors replying to feedback - from what I care - just "like" the post and move on, I'll know that you've read it and be happy that my X hours spent into playing and writing feedback posts served their purpose. There is nothing that grinds my gears more than mapmaker going defensive (or excusing themselves) on the feedback he recieves (unless defense was explicitly requested by poster). Politely asking for a ways to improve is ok tho.
I'll be looking forward to this Thursday.
I feel you are definitely welcomed to post any form of constructive criticism withou necesarily being derogatory or backhanded.
Admittedly, I find strange that you dislike the idea of not being able to be mean to an author, and angry if an author defneds towards what they feel is an attack. While I can agree sometimes some stuff simply doesnt work, just as many others its simply a case that deisgn choices simply are not the cup of tea for the tester. There can be a mutual feedback on this however and iterate certain aspects while not dismantling the core.
Im ok with criticism as long as it dosent "TURN IN TO A TWEETER ACCOUNT BASHING HATEFUL THING".
I have work for a few company in my years and I have always follow the rule of "IF YOU BRING ME A PROBLEM WITH OUT A SOLUTION YOUR ARE NOT CONTRIBUTING" Thats why I always end up in management positions after 6 months of working for the companys.
That said bring the critic and give a solution with out taking the main idea or story out of the map. And..............NEVER EVER INSULT THE MAPMAKER.
Yeah, I can't agree with your positions. I've written a fair amount about giving and receiving feedback for my job, which I really think is worth reading:
Remember that you don't have to change anything. No matter what your critic says, it's only one person's opinion. Just because they don't like what you've done doesn't make it wrong. There's very rarely a truly right thing—you are perfectly entitled to stick to your original vision.
I feel like this is a problem many mapmakers struggle with. Often people feel like they have to please everyone.
Also, if people want to be assholes, there is little someone can do to stop them. It's just a reflection of the type of person they are.

When I give feedback, I often feel like I am giving the impression that I think the map I am testing is bad. This is because when giving feedback I don't have much to say on what I like, I might say Great terraining, Great story or Love the use of custom units, but after that I don't know what to say that sounds like I like the project, I just go on to point out any glitch or mistake and tell them what I think could be improved. I think what I should do is if it could be insulting, or give a negative impression (and I do not want it to), I will just say something like:
I am sorry if my feedback is insulting, or sounds like I hate or dislike your map, or is saying you did a bad job at something. That is not my intent. I loved it and found it very fun, good job!

I wrote the "Don't be an asshole" rule for the original BWTT that is so hotly debated right now and it really was the most basic, off-the-cuff thing. This always seems to get overblown as ONLY SAY GOOD THINGS, which I don't really get. You can be honest without being a jerk about it. I even said that in the OP: "Please be honest, but don't be rude or make personal attacks", so I am genuinely curious how else this could be interpreted.
I'll go ahead and explain it seeing as how I get boatloads of shitty asshole comments all the time on my videos that irritate me. It's clear that some of my commenters are masturbating in their own smugness; they feel superior pointing out that Jayborino, someone who has created something/grown a following, has made a mistake. While it may be in their subconscious, it's very plain to me when certain comments pretty much only exist to flippantly condescend versus be informative, a conversation starter, or simply observational - all of these could be positive or negative in their content; you can point out a mistake I (or anyone) makes without being a smug asshole about it and I very much appreciate the folks that do it. I could seriously write pages on this topic now after experiencing it so intensely for 3 years.
This really seems like elementary stuff when it comes to social skills, and I feel like an asshole myself overly explaining it. I understand that text simply lacks tonal expression which is where most misunderstandings arise from on forums and within comment chains - and this is probably amplified even moreso with certain folks who struggle in real life with social cues, so I shouldn't be so quick to assume how simple it should be I guess.
My attitude is always accused of being overly nice or trying too hard to be positive but I am not saying you need to be super positive to fulfill this basic requirement. You can still leave an honest, opinionated, 'negative' comment (poor terraining, didn't like this cinematic) and have it still leave a positive impact on the reader. Don't be an asshole!

Cool, nice to see that conduct is such a big part of current mapsters culture.
I took my chance asking if people would be more chill about it, but I guess no luck. If I manage to direct an outsider to leave their feedback for this endeavor I hope you guys won't bully them too much should they say something inconsiderate. I'll be sure to stress to them how much everyone appreciates their professional approach.
Admittedly, I find strange that you dislike the idea of not being able to be mean to an author, and angry if an author defneds towards what they feel is an attack...
Author asking to invest time into their creation and then being defensive about anything sends the message that author really isn't open about what they want to hear. From feedback providers point of view - if you don't want to hear something - fine, you needed it more than me, I simply won't invest further time into this communication. It grinds my gears to see people shoot themselves in the foot because they don't realize concepts of demographics, personal preferences and the randomness of circumstances.
Wouldn't you agree that sometimes just giving a silent nod is more beneficial than acting on emotions? Sure, I'm being strict on author and not on tester, but the obligation to be gracious lies on the one who receives the benefits, in whatever form they may come.

I agree, but you and I also must understand that authors may have spend hundreds-thousands of hours on their project. I assume, when giving feedback, that the author will be defensive; especially when it comes to game design. I think a very common reply (and I have said this) is "this game is for a target audience, if you are too stupid to understand how to play it, you aren't the audience." That is a poor attitude to have, and both tester and editor need to overcome it. You are absolutely correct that the mapmaker needs the feedback far more than the person giving it needs to give it. really, I feel it is much more difficult for the mapmaker to remain calm than the player. but this is why I am strongly against insults. It is fine to dislike something. refrain from calling it stupid is all. "I had no clue what I needed to do to win the game." might piss a mapmaker off, but is also good feedback. "There are too many words, I'm not gonna read all that!" might inspire a mapmaker to shout "WELL THEN YOU WONT KNOW HOW TO PLAY THE GAME!" again, good feedback, bad mapmaker.
It is a giant crapshoot to know who will be offended by what. If I feel someone has offered very rude advice, I will send them a PM about it. It really isn't a major concern. For how small of a community is left here, most of the members are reasonably professional. That is why we have this initiative. a 1 star review on the arcade "boring" is not very good feedback; and anyone can publish their map to get a simple review. People here know the work that goes into the editor, and can offer possible solutions, without that entitled opinion that you owe them something (found in many game critics these days).
Wouldn't you agree that sometimes just giving a silent nod is more beneficial than acting on emotions? Sure, I'm being strict on author and not on tester, but the obligation to be gracious lies on the one who receives the benefits, in whatever form they may come.
Surely the enttertainment you may have got is not benefical? I understand that some maps are quite rboken, but I still think both tester and author can be civil about it. When defending Im not trying to say that the author is free from criticism, far from it. If the author is overly defensive about every criticism (dont worry i know plenty of people like that, know the feeling), then he is being just a bad sport too. Again, you are free to look at the feedback I have given on occassion. I will be critical when required, while still trying to be civil, and avoiding being insulting or degrading. DeltronLive is a rpetty good example of a guy who can give tons of criticism and still being constructive about it.
Ok, so here's the thing: I believe that part of being a decent human being is doing the best we can to prevent or mitigate harm to others. We won't be perfect, of course, but it's important work. That goes for critics and authors—I'm not giving anyone a pass on being an asshole.
If you're looking for a mental shortcut to avoid a lot assholeish behavior as a reviewer (and don't want to read the article I already posted), change every statement you make from (seemingly) objective, "there is too much text," too subjective "there was more text than I was willing to read." You can level up by asking questions about the things you dislike instead of making statements, but just doing the first change will make a world of difference.
If you have a testing exercise that is just come and share feedback without too many guidelines - it might attract some people to freestyle it. Tell what they think using their own speaking habits without bothering too much. The more guidelines you add - the more hurdles there are to just casually drop in and post something. Of course, everyone interprets them differently. Some take "don't be an asshole" as - no personal attacks. Others may take it as "be polite", or even "be nice". Depending on personal circumstances, interpretations of this guideline might be the difference between "eh, I can give it a shot" and "meh, what a bother".
My agenda was not to facilitate a helpful high-level feedback provision. There are already people who are on it. The idea was to involve those who don't want to bother too much. Whatever is posted could generate discussions and more participation. I am not disregarding the value of being helpful with the feedback provided - it is obvious we don't have problem with that as there are some people who are quite passionate about being helpful and nurturing. They post good extensive feedback in encouraging way that makes others to aspire to be like them.
Now whether the potential people I was concerned about exist or not - we'll never know who and when lurks. New people have been popping out here and there.
You can make argument that we should strive to bring the best of people instead of pandering to the lowest common denominator, but I believe that value can be found in anything and the opportunities should be explored. Again, you will teach people on how to be good organically by being an example to be followed if that is your concern.
In the end, it comes down to that I foolishly got influenced by my own bias and assumed that the most valuable thing coming out of this could be the volume of people getting involved as the more people could provide a bigger range of points of view for the testing projects showcased.
It is however now clear that community’s intent has been slightly different - to create grounds where authors can be given focused high-quality feedback, for this goal, setting up guidelines is completely OK.

My two maps I have released are basically the same (I update one then change the five triggers that differentiate the two) one is easy/normal difficulty the other is hard-brutal(EXTREME). The only reason this is the case is because my map was not originally my map, it was someone called nagnazul's map, then he stopped developing it and gave permission for anyone to do anything to it. So I did, I 'renewed' it, hence renewed in the name. Now I could not combine the difficulties in one map because of the 35000 character long script file which I need to know the coding language c to change so there can be 4 difficulties in one map.
I think no more than two maps should be put up for testing, but only in specific conditions, like a campaign intro (like CybrosX's taldarim campain) and mission 1, or my case maybe.
I am sorry if this post was lengthy.

If I understand correctly, it is the same game, except that the 2nd map is just a harder difficulty? that would be allowed. Similarly if someone had a campaign that had a "starting map" which loaded you into the current mission map; a "boot screen" map, so to speak.
I have a friend with a good arcade map; but he isn't ready either; he was hoping for February; time to get an AI working; since it is a multiplayer only game; and an AI would make it much easier for us to test.

Ok, so, this was my hypothesis.

Stranded on Krydon Renewed- A renewed version of Stranded on Krydon that is being constantly updated, has improved visuals, is more friendly to new players, lots more fun tweaks and much more planned to come.
Stranded on Krydon Renewed EXTREME- A modified version of SoKR with much harder difficulty.
@R0binicus: Go
If I understand correctly, it is the same game, except that the 2nd map is just a harder difficulty? that would be allowed.
