I won't lie. When I first saw this I thought it seemed like a moronic idea. Debating in Starcraft who wants to do that? The topics aren't even that interesting!
Was I ever wrong. It's not the topics or even the game per se that creates the entertainment. Debates is a SOCIAL game. And it's a blast. Get 8 people in a map all with their own ideas and opinions. Throw in a joker or two and you have a genuine good time. I've had matches I'm sad to leave because of how enjoyable it was. This in turn makes me super glad to see people I recognize in a new game.
This game is great and quite fun, and sure, I've only played about 20 matches.. and I've had my fair share of trolls and fools. But I can't say I've had a single match that wasn't in some way entertaining.
I recommend everyone try this game at least once, and make sure to bring your friends and HAVE FUN! It's an even added bonus if you have a microphone.
You'll find it on the 3rd-4th page on US Bnet.
Be sure to give me a holler too if you see me in a match. My screenname is Trucidar.
Rodrigo! I hereby say that I will post Debates on the EU servers for you! Now lets get it up NAO! >:(
Sorry, there are some reasons I haven't released Debates on the EU servers yet.
I would do that if I had my own EU account. It's hard to give the map to someone I don't know very well to update for me with all its crypt or to get an account of someone who might doubt of me if something happens.
I might send Debates to the map contest, and before that I can't have anyone with a copy of the map yet. Also, I will try to submit Debates in the European contest, since Debates wasn't published on EU yet.
I update Debates every day. I'm always fixing bugs, removing thoughts people don't like, adding thoughts, etc. Debates has the "thought of the week" that has to be updated every week.
Debates has 7 admins who I talk every day. I am always on Battle.net to listen problems that happened during games, or playing, or calling 50 people to play every day. I'm stucked at home playing Debates and motivating people to play. That is how I made it to the page 3. I wouldn't be so active on the EU server, and therefore, it would be very hard to make the map popular.
Look at CardCraft. It's an excellent game and it's not popular on Battle.net NA. Although sc2mapster members know very well about Debates, most of the Starcraft players never heard about it. There is less than 100 people on EU willing to play Debates. This is not enough to make the map popular. Look at my map Platform Defense. It was one of the first 5 maps in the 1st page during all beta phase 1 and half of phase 2, but today the map is in page 200 with 5 games played per day.
I plan to update to EU, but I need Debates with more updates (I'm still updating every day), and more fame. Debates is just not popular enough to survive on Europe :(
Most of the players on EU does not speak english, and Debates is all about english. The whole game you have to prove your point in english. That will reduce popularity even more. With no popularity, no one plays.
Debates is a long game with 8 players. You cannot play it with less than 5 players, which makes it very very hard to reach the first few pages.
The only way to make it popular on NA was having 3 players to boost it during 10 hours and more 500 players who love the game to play every day. There's even a debates school in which most of the students were playing the whole day. Plus all the videos posted on sc2mapster! That's how Debates got to the 3rd page. Sadly, Debates on EU will be exactly like CardCraft on NA.
I am trying to find a solution to update Debates on EU one day. I just hope Blizzard realizes it; if at least they could unlock regions...

That is just not true.
I understand the problems with publishing it on EU, especially those regarding popularity, but plz publish just one version so we have a chance of playing it here and make it more popular until you are able to give full support for the european servers as you are doing for the north americans. That would be so great! :)

He doesn't feel like putting it on EU until some time after Sept. 11. It will eventually be on EU, based on what he's saying. I'm not sure if it's even possible to create a cut-down version of this game. I mean, what's there to remove while the whole remains fun?
As for the map itself, I have not played it yet but I know good social direction when I see it. Debates is in a similar vein as Mafia (a WC3 map I made), since both are social games (I suppose, most of Mafia is "debating" about who should go to the gallows), so I know about how challenging it is to make the game appealing to players. However, when it succeeds, it's extremely rewarding, more so than other games. I'm sure you know the feeling, RodrigoAlves.

Yes DarkRevenantX, I know what you mean. Debates in page 3 was for me more rewarding than my map Platform Defense in page 1 (during the whole beta). Platform Defense is all about Booms and Bangs, but Debates is about personality. The players are 10x more involved in the game. Some player told me in game yesterday that "Debates is not a game anymore, but it's now [his] reality."
I cannot sacrifice the online ranking just because of the crypt; I have to publish the complete game, but not before 11 sept. Indeed, the map will eventually be on EU.
Well just played ur map for a bit. I have a suggestion. I think you should have it vote on lets say a "difficulty" type setting before the match starts, one that has no BS thoughts and is more serious, or one that is more laid back and goofy. At the moment 90% of our "thoughts" were totally rubbish. When is a chair not a chair? Nova better than kerrigan? D3 better than sc2? Aliens live among us? I didn't write them down but those were actually like the best out of the worst ones we skipped. Out of 4 games we skipped 90% of the thoughts. There needs to be more intelligent thought out "thoughts" that are debatable. Just off the top of my head: Abortion, Offshore Drilling, Advanced AI Development, Same sex marriage, hell even have one that says "Your current president is doing a good job". Most of the thoughts you couldn't even take a legitimate position on let alone argue them.
The only one that was really a good debate out of the whole experience was "Hybrid cars are not as beneficial" or something and the thought of the week about history. Except the one about history is so obvious that no one could come up with a good argument against it.
This might just be an idea, but if the map is so much fun (I haven't played it myself yet, EU player) maybe some players could toss in a euro each and get you an EU account so you can upload and update the map at the same time.

Otherwise fine map.
Silenkiller, it's hard for me to come up with 360 thoughts and please everyone with all of them. The game has more than 100 legit debate topics that includes all good suggestions you gave, such as Abortion. These "rubbish" topics are what many Starcraft players suggested to me on youtube. Players want debates that require creativity. It's fun to debate a thought that is "outside the box" and very rewarding when you come up with an awesome argument defending something that is clearly not true. Debates is also a philosophical game. These weird thoughts is what makes the game addicting. There is no clear separation between what is serious and what is not. Every joke topic can be discussed as a serious topic. For example, "the earth is flat" is a community with thousands of people who truly believe on that (see www.theflatearthsociety.org). If the players don't like a thought, they can change it many times per round.
Ah excellent. Well I do propose a vote system at map start to either allow or block silly topics. Would help I think for groups that are more into a serious discussion. Love the map though.
Hey this might be a good addition to the map, Rodrigo. When the map starts, players vote on if they want all serious topics, stupid pointless topics (stupid pointless topics rule) or a mix. Then the game will only choose the kind of topic the players voted on. That would really make the game alot better,
edit:: oops I just realized that was already suggested by somebody else. sorry. But still, what do you think.
Hey. I just arrive from my trip and realize that Debates is not on the list. I don't know what happened (and I got so good footage in the rollercoaster for my next Debates video)...

Pretty much spot on with the review, Aenigma, ;).
The creator should somehow manage to get this to the EU servers... i bet a lot of ppl would like to test it...
Rodrigo! I hereby say that I will post Debates on the EU servers for you! Now lets get it up NAO! >:(
That would be really sweet.... i can offer my help as welll, if an uploader is needed...
Hey. Nice thread. :)

We are asking Blizzard to feature Debates. If you like the idea, please, suggest it here: http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/blog/617808

Please, suggest all thoughts you consider good on the youtube channel scdebates: http://www.youtube.com/scDebates
I will add your suggestion into the game :)
Look at these two screenshots from the same game. One is showing a fun topic, and the other, a serious topic.

People who play debates need to unistall SC2 IMO.
Not to mention your Screen shots seem to be racist against black zerglings. Im calling the NAACP.
Pure violence towards others who are too stupid to understand the point your trying to make works much better btw.

I love debating, especially topics that most people don't enjoy talking about, so right away this sounded interesting, will have to check this out.
I know many people are tired of me talking about Debates, but I just found out this review and I thought it was nice. :) http://www.examiner.com/online-games-in-national/starcraft-2-custom-map-debates
