Hero Battle: Trial of Zeal [+Trailer]

    Enter the Trial of Zeal to join the ongoing gladiatorial conflict between the Corrupt and the Pure. Battle with unique heroes and defeat the opposition!

    Hey there sc2mapster! After a year’s worth of development my hero arena has finally been released thanks to the support this site has given me. I intend to make this thread a place to leave feedback and discuss/develop my map further.

    Following the footsteps of the hero arena genre, Trial of Zeal is best described as a gladiator arena, pitting team versus team duels minus the leveling or item building. In addition, most projectiles in the game can be dodged or blocked through the use of obstacles.

    This Map is featured in the Arcade Highlight as of June 21 2013!*

    Bound by Team Health

    ToZ strives to differ from other arenas through the inclusion of a Team Health. This special health depletes when a team’s hero takes damage. It also decreases periodically if the opposing team controls more Beacons than your team does. All damage, no healers required. While the Team Health stands and as long as there is at least one member of the team alive, injured heroes revive over time.

    Go for the KO

    To win a game you need to take down all opposing heroes. However the twist is, all of them must be downed together within a time frame since heroes revive after a period of time. In order to accomplish this goal players will need to cooperate bursts and perform target switches to down all opponents together before a revive occurs. There are a couple ways players can achieve this, but they can also opt to deplete the enemy Team Health to zero to prevent revives.

    On a side note: anybody know how i can add spoiler tags?


    There is a button on the menu labeled Perks, what’s that?

    It’s a feature I will be releasing once the main elements of the game have been balanced. Something along the lines of a talent tree, basically a customization menu.

    Where can I lookup hero abilities?

    I don’t have a website or even a blog for this map. However I’ve made an in-game database of somesort that includes everything you need to know about existing heroes as well as helpful strategy tips to use with/against them.

    Can you add more heroes?

    Sure. I will be adding new heroes every so often. Once HOTS comes out next month I will be constantly doing this. The current hero selection menu will also be updated when I exceed its limits.


    I have tested this map with a group of friends. We may have left out some bugs but I am sure we have found the major ones. I will be happy if you could report any bugs/glitches that you found here.

    The battle net lobby should now show when not making a custom game. error on my end, didn't realize hide battle net lobby was checked :/

    Gameplay Changes:


    • Weapon damage reduced to 100-125 from 120-160.
    • Jade Path: damage reduced to 190 from 210.
    • Bloom Damage: reduced to 140 from 180.


    • Maximum Carnage: duration increased to 10 seconds from 8.

    Played it with friends, great fun. Sadly not played enough as of now.

    My personal favorite is the high templar that can store spells on his mirror images. Right up my style :P

    Overall great hero design, not one of them is boring to play. Good job there!

    Yes, there isn't enough players at the moment. Though I think the map has gotten more attention in the EU lately. Hope Hots will swarm the sc2 arcade with more players in the next few days.

    This... is really polished. Played it a ton in the last two days. Hope you consistently put out patches, but I think there may be some problems with balance so I'd keep an eye out for that. Not enough people play it right now though so I suggest everybody go rate and play. Deserves to be on the list.

    glad you enjoyed it! I admit balance is rather off at the moment and I'm constantly tweaking it in hopes of getting it right for competitive play.

    Balance changes and bug fixes. Trying to control more damage variables in abilities to prevent them from being too weak or strong if used in a certain way. Preparing to add new heroes soon.

    Very fun map, well polished, well deserved on the highlight. Some criticism in order of priority:

    - Leavers ruin the game completely, an AI or letting team members control the leavers atleast is necessary.

    - The time delay gets very annoying, 70+ seconds picking a hero then another 30 pre arena change. Plus all the slow camera work etc. Is cool for the first game but after that ppl want to skip it. New players never skip, so you're stuck waiting for nothing.

    5 experienced players should be able to force start a game, over 1 noob delaying the entire game.

    - No banks, experience, levels, stats? What why?

    - The health regeneration are cheap. Fightning to the death in an epic last 1on1 then a guy just gets a lucky +300 health and wins, Not good :/

    - The initial Hero Selection, the bars are very vague, perhaps give them tooltips if you scroll your mouse over them for more details. Like what does Control exactly mean?

    Appreciate the feedback.

    • AI is something I very much wanted to do, however due to some of the present hero concepts I have, I feel like it will be a tricky thing to implement. If you are familiar with my Team Health mechanic, its very crucial that this AI is intelligent enough to not be an open punching bag for the opposing team.
    • I am working on some sort of practice period during that wait period, that way maybe it will feel less of a drag waiting? What you said makes sense about the 5v1 noob thing.
    • I wouldve immediately added leveling/progression if we had server side banks :P I'll be adding this in the future, though probably for stats and cosmetic unlockables.
    • The only time when powerups are ineffective is when your Team Health is at zero. Powerup effects are halved by then. I get where you're coming from though for the luck aspect of things, I'll probably reduce the frequency of non Beacon spawned powerups.
    • Didn't know why I didn't think of mouse-over tooltips. Thanks for pointing that out.

    Will you be updating this map regularly? I'd like to give alot of suggestions/feedback, it has alot of potential if you're dedicated?

    - Could you atleast KEEP leaver heroes in the game and give shared control of Heroes for time being? 2v3 is GG instantly,

    - I've played alot of games now, I'd really recommend focusing on the balance. A few minor tweaks can do ALOT to improve and change the game. Nova seems well OP for example.

    I'd love to say more, depends how much you'll be updating and how often?
