So I've been doing research to find the best solution to my dilemma. If your willing to give me advice, please read first. Let me explain that to you guys.
I am a gamer, go figure since I'm posting on this forum at all. I like entertainment and keeping myself from boredom. However, in a college setting, I am wondering if it's better to have a small laptop and something like the PSP NGP or if it's better to have a single unit that can do both like the Alienware M14x as an example. I know gaming laptops are expensive and heavy, but if I could use the power, I wouldn't mind having it. At a college, if you leave a pencil lying around, it will be gone during the time it takes to use the bathroom. That's why you need to keep everything with you at all times or chance theft. I do play games like SC2 that you can't have on a system like the Play Station portable. So I guess what I'm asking to gamers is this. If you need to game on the go, do you bring a monster laptop like an Alienware (the one I'd like costs $1,200 base and weighs 6.45 pounds) or do you use your Nintendo DS (about a $250 portable) and a decent small laptop ($600+)? I would probably be a commuter so I would move it every day and I don't really like tablets or $400 phones.
Don't get me wrong I would LOVE an Alienware M14x but I think it might have a few power design flaws and my friends have told me that they are the same as boats: holes in the water you throw your money into is the saying. Here is the monster I was looking at:
If I go for the latter I would still need a $600+ laptop that can get through 4 years of college work. If I go for the former I don't know what I would be getting into. At least the Alienware can easily play Marine Arena, hehehehe
Thanks for taking the time to read it if you made it to this part of the page :)
Seems like an obvious choice. Get a gaming laptop. Hell, if you're unsure about Alienware (they're owned by Dell, so hey...), just get one from another brand?
Any kind of handheld console will be largely irrelevant in a year or so, plus they aren't really for gaming. The only handheld game I know that is being played professionally is Pokémon.
If you also need a laptop to help you in college, then I don't see why you're even doubting. The only pros I've see you name for the NGP is that it's easier to hang on to, but in the same breath you're saying you'll need to get a laptop anyway. Can you name any proper pros about the handheld, keeping in mind you need a laptop anyway?
I heard things like they are overpriced, your throwing your money away, they die in 2 years, they crash a lot, etc etc. I need a machine that won't do that on a regular basis.
If you were going to get one of the two, which would it be?
I can't speak for those 2, but if that's your concern, then
A) check out reviews of whatever you plan on buying
B) make sure you've got insurance covered
C) buy a brand you feel you can trust.
There's plenty of good laptops out there. I'm personally not a fan of 'gaming laptop' in the first place (because that's a contradictio in terminis), but just getting a laptop that can load newer games without crashing in a year or two should be doable.
pretty much. I'm not really sure what people are saying when they say that if it's a laptop then it isn't a gaming machine. It has a closeable lid and it can play SC2 = it's a gaming laptop, at least to me. O well I'll get one sooner or later :P
