Being a long time DotA player, I do like the route that Valve/Icefrog is taking. I hope they keep a lot of the tricks still in DotA2 like there is in the warcraft 3 engine and remove some of the bugs that occur.
TF2 was their last great game for me. L4D was short lived and L4D2 was a no-buy. This will probably be a no-buy for me as well.
Then again, to me DOTA ruined the war3 custom map scene and was inferior to tides of blood... and I had/have no desire to try LoL or HoN. I've never really been a huge fan of AOS's. You just sit and grind exp and then before you know it one side is doing better and then it's over quite fast. But people seem to like it.
Edit: Also the trailer was kinda meh don't you guys think? Some sounds were pretty low budget lol.
I'm thinking the reason they don't have new heroes in dota 2 is because icefrog didn't really make up dota, didn't he just take ideas from the community and it eventually became dota. That's what I always hear is icefrog didn't make dota really.
I don't remember the exact details but DOTA was actually really nooby when it first came out. There were a lot of versions too but the allstars one caught on... whether or not icefrog made it or took over it I don't know.
Some history on DotA. Not even Eul came up with the initial idea. DotA 2 has no new heroes because it is a direct port from DotA 1. Both DotA 1 and DotA 2 will be updated together as long as there is interest in the first one.
In a response to both of you; the very first 'DOTA' was developped by Eul, even though your thread does mention Valley of Dissent - it just didn't play a very big role; most of what Eul stole, he took from Aeon of Strife. And that first map definitely wasn't nooby - I think it was the first well-known map to implement custom spells.
Sorry Mozared I'm not a huge DOTA buff but my memory says that it was pretty sucky. I still have one reign-of-chaos DOTA map from spring 2003, but it crashes (now) when I try to play it (attached). But yeah, I remember it being really bad. Maybe it wasn't his version but I probably would have had his if it was around.
Also, that article is kind of incorrect about custom spells. You couldn't edit abilities until FT came out in mid 2003. Before then you had to use the standard spells (unless you triggered custom stuff possibly... but I don't think there would have been much of this?). A lot of hero maps were pretty bad until custom abilities starting being made in the Frozen Throne.
All in all though, it goes back to SC1 where my knowledge is zero.
Most of the models don't at all look like the WC3 ones. They can't change the whole looking of a hero. That would be stupid. I would like to see directly which hero is Slayer or Axe.
I don't really think, that the LoL community would switch to Dota2. The whole community is full of kids who never played Dota before and don't intend to do so. I'm quite happy that they won't have any interest in Dota2.
As for now, lets see how it goes on in the future with Dota2,LoL and HoN. I don't really give HoN a chance though.
I turned on the livestream for a few minutes and then turned it off. I never intended to play the game in the first place, but now I will avoid it at all costs.
The match was MYM vs m5 and here is what I noticed as soon as it started:
Crystal Maiden looks undoubtedly like Jaina from Wc3
Drow Ranger once again easy to recognise from Wc3 as Sylvanus
Earthshaker is obviously a Tauren
Vengeful Spirit is the Avatar of Vengeance with some minor changes
Ancient Apparition's portrait looked like a stone-like Archon (Sc2)
These models are just higher quality with some slight changes to try and avoid copyright. They don't remind me of the Wc3 units, they are the Wc3 units. I wouldn't be surprised seeing a lawsuit in the future.
I also agree with DogmaiSEA about the UI. It's a horrible piece of shit.
I don't really know, why people would stick to WC3 though.
You can't even play a normal game there...leavers, disconnects etc.
You know the majority of players cannot afford to buy a game like dota 2, unless they have specific plans for chinese region like blizzard (not that blizzard succeed on that subs plan for sc2), the game will not be preferred over wc3.
Which also reminded me the reason blizzard games was so popular and played by everyone on the globe: piracy. Too sad they tried to combat it now...

I'm not caring for Valve much anymore :/

Good Morning Köln!
4 hours to the first match!
http://dota2.com/tournaments/international/?q=hd&c=English
Who's watching with me? :)
Will be there from tomorrow to sunday, can't wait.
Not only that. The original/real author of AoS went by the pseudonym of `Aeon 64`. I should know lol.
Actually editing slk files directly you could have custom spells on RoC
Go play Antioch Chronicles Remastered!
Also, coming soon, Antioch Episode 3: Thoughts in Chaos!
Dont like mapster's ugly white? Try Mapster's Classic Skin!
So ... DotA 2 is DotA with different graphics, that still look nearly as the wc3 equivalent of each hero? Meh.
Lawl ... fail ... epic fucken fail ...
The UI is shit.
The graphics are shittier than HoN.
Did I mention fail?
Its so full of fail its not funny.
Poor valve.
Poor chinese dota players ...
They gonna stick to wc3 ...
Lawl ...
Fail.
Actually, I agree on this. I watched the stream. Looks/plays terrible. Will probably be a fail.
The graphics are cool, similar to LoL but a lot darker. (HoN style)
If the game play feels like Dota I will definitely buy it.
I don't really know, why people would stick to WC3 though.

Still holding hope that the game will be renamed to Warcraft 4 at the last minute, excusing this blatant copying of Warcraft 3 models.
Riot must seriously be sighing in relief.
