Right now, im finding it really hard to get Feedback for ANYTHING... Even if people are online, all they do is look. No comments, and you need to Bump the topic constantly, just to get someone to say.
"Looks Interesting :)"
Wow -.- 3 Days Later and thats all i get....
Its not the Popularity system that stops me from continuing on with my maps, its the lack of feedback... You know, feedback goes a Long way, good or bad, at least someone is looking at your stuff and posting feedback.
The map forums section is splintered into many sections. Rather than 1 as whole, encouraging a greater proportion of forum members to browse through it all.
The map database section is almost invisible. You actually have to go there yourself, there's no interaction between the forums.
My stuff isnt posted in the map stuff though, its Either Terrain Shots or Map Development.. I even have a topic in the feedback forum thats been there for 3 days with 1 post saying "Sounds fun :)"...
We live in what I like to call the "ADHD" generation. Most people don't have the patience to leave a comment or feedback unless they REALLY like something. That's why youtube vids have 2 million views and 30 comments. The more people you can get to look at your thread, the more people will leave comments. You also have to rember that a LOT of people do not have an account here. They come to check out the cool new maps and be on their way. Let's take an example. The Subsistence Announce Thread. It has 847 views and 21 comments. That means only about 40% of people left a comment. And that thread went all out- a great trailer, very big hype leading up to it, etc... I always make an effort to comment on almost everything I look at (which explains my ridiculously high post count) but most people won't do that.
The best way to get people's attention is with a video. If not, you should post screenshots at the very least. When people see a video, they can actually visualize what you are saying, and see it for themselves. Not only is this more exciting, but more people will watch it than would read a big wall of text.
Another way to get people's attention is via your signature. I wanted to advertise my assassins map. Nobody really responded to the thread. I made a video, which got a little attention. But then I made a signature banner like this:
That linked to my thread. People will not notice you changed your signature if you just add a text link. People respond to visual stuff (IE images and video). I put that in my signature, and I instantly have my map advertised in 2500 different places. Respect and use the power of your signature ;)
I guess, but even yourself you were the one who commented on my ArtCraft map, 'Sounds Fun :)' Lol, didnt help much....
I've posted screenshots and all sorts, and nowadays the only way to get people enticed into a post is with a topic like this that has the words POPULARITY SYSTEM, everyones like "OMGAWD JEEEZZZ, ANOTHER RANT!"
I posted this topic, and within 5 minutes i get a response. I post screenshots for a Map and its left hanging there, until its dissapeared from the Latest Posts list, and gone forever.
And wtf?!

Yeah, I've just realised... the Active Posts Box on the main page works very similar to a particular system which is said to be very bad on these forums.
Well you can't expect everyone to have an interest in your map or have a solution to your problem. If I were to comment on every thread I read, there would be a lot spam, simply because I discover that I don't know the solution. Then I just close the thread and find another one that I might have something worth posting. Otherwise, there would be a lot of annoying post that contributes with nothing but "Hey, that's a bad problem you got there sonny boy!" everywhere.
Thats the thing, i have 1 or 2 trigger problems every month or so, but get responses for that, but when i want to SHOWCASE something, it becomes dead and thats it.
I didn't realize that was published :D I thought it was just a progress report, to which I responded "sounds fun". There really was not that much for me to say about your thread (since I didn't realize it was playable, lol).

In a tester's defense, it's also 'getting the word out there' that matters. I frequent mapster... frequently, and I didn't even know you were looking for feedback up to now. That means something is wrong with your advertising, regardless of whether I just missed your topics or not.
yup, "they" say that if one person writes a complaint letter, it represents a million unsatisfied customers. People in general don't tend to weigh in on subjects unless they are extremely for or against. Still, after loads of hard work, "looks cool :)" isn't exactly humbling.

I did what you said, added pictures to my Sig :P It sucks you can only have a Limit of 2 though : /
Getting feedback is REALLY difficult, especially in a forum. This is how I get feedback.
My friend doesn't use his BNET anymore, so he gave me his username and password. I go on his account, and then post in the custom map channel "Just found a really fun map! Wanna try?" or something like that. Every mapper says their game is fun. If someone ELSE says the map is fun, that is more convincing.
I get a game going, and then whatever people say isn't censored at all. They are just playing the game. They complain about stuff they don't like. They are just playing some unknown custom game, completely unaware they are testing.
That is what I have found to be the best way to get feedback. It is honest, and the game fills up fairly quickly. (Took me about 5 minutes to get a game of 8)
People need to stop worrying so much about maps being popular and worry more about actually making their maps good, so damn good that popularity doesn't matter.

That's mainly because of 2 issues:

Well, other thing is to get comment from clueless user who does not bother to even check the map first.

So yeah, there you go. That is my advice.
Great to be back and part of the community again!
