Diablo III is not like WoW, it is more a single player than a multiplayer game. If you play in single player, then there are no other players in "your" world (however, an internet connection is required). You might group with friends to join a world together or you can join a public game. In both cases, there are several other players in your world, but not like WoW, because there are only few players in the same realm.
You don't have to choose a realm for a character, though a character is only available in one region (America, Europe, ...).
What Sanktoras says is true. Diablo 3 is more of a single player game that allows you to group up with 3 friends if you so desire Think of it like playing several WoW instances in a row without having an outside world, and you being able to solo each instance if you so desire.

It's funny. When I played Diablo 2, I thought of it purely as a multiplayer game. I actually never ever touched singleplayer, because it took such a long time to level up.
So... how does one actually return to your single player progress? I joined a couple of multi games, did stuff then left cause I wanted to do the quests on my own but when i returned to single player I was in the old quest (the one I played in multi) and I couldn't return to my single player one unless it was from a checkpoint waaaaay past from where I was. Like I literally had cleaned the room before the cemetery and had already found the portal in the cemetery, I returned to tristam to exit the game and then I did the multi and all that was lost :( I had to restart from where you open the north gate and clean that forst again QQ this is why I didn't want to go multiplayer, same happened in the beta QQ
If you join another persons quest, you loose your current quest progress. But you can restart at the beginning of any quest using "change quest" in the main menu. For example, if you get half way through the cathedral dungeon and then join a different game, you will need to restart the cathedral.

That's just stupid. Plain simple stupid :P
It's just tedious but oh well, I guess it's more exp :P
Another day, a level 20 Witch Doctor, a level 9 Monk and a level 13 Wizard later, I can safely say Witch Doc really isn't my thing. Annoying to play as heck. Game's so much more fun with proper characters.
Did 5 levels on the Witch Doctor today in a good 4 hours. Then three more hours to take the Wizard from 1 to 13, and an hour to take the Monk from 1 to 9. I've got a pall who's 45 on his Barbarian - he's completed the game on normal and has already, on nightmare, passed the point where my Witch Doctor, on normal, is.
Your character or group make-up also matters somewhat, though. Monk seems to be ridiculously fast and pairs well with something like Demon Hunter to rush through anything; I'm sure me and my pall could've done that 1-9 run faster than the hour we did it in.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
LOL!!! LIKE. It deserves it.
I LAG TOO MUCH, WTF... AND SC2 HAS HIGHER GRAPHICS! x-x
EDIT: On the right side, it's very easy to minimize! :D
This is a sad day. Because evil is back.

Hope I could help you.

I won't be able to play until this weekend. Mainly because I'm too busy. So I'll have a clear path once it's time.
Just hit 20, and I gotta say, this game is amazing!

I managed to get in at 11:59 P.M. Many of my friends took over an hour to get in though.
@xcorbo: Go

Oh i thought it was that in just one sit. then sounds about right. i've played like 4 hours total and have a lvl 10 demon hunter.
