Na'vi couldn't really be called "fantasy". They don't have fireballs or any other kind of magic we usually see in fantasy worlds, only bows, spears and alien horses. Actually, mostly it is very easy to recreate in SC2. Marines as marines, goliaph as those big combat suits, battlecruisers and banshees as humans' fleet, etc.
Anyways, we should look at SC2 from futuristic point of view. It is WC3 no more so we should create our own worlds with heavy guns and devastating nuclear bombs. This way SC2 works fine and even have more stuff to work with - protoss melee fighters and monsters - zerg. Talking about available additional models - we have alot more then we had when WC3 came out without expansion with number of new tilesets, naga and all other shit. Plus SC2 - as it seems for me now - has alot of doodads and possibilities, more then WC3 has.
Talking about spells, I don't see much differense between SC2 and WC3. I mean in WC3 and in SC2 we have number of heroes with unique abilities and most of units, especially in SC2, have their own spell to play with.
I am not sure, but last few years 99% of maps and terrain contests and stuff in WC3 is made with damn big use of custom models. Not often you can find "old school" WC3 map, everyone uses custom content. So the problem with SC2 is that we don't have all this content available, mostly because models made for WC3 are very simple and don't fit quality SC2 requires.

Don't forget that SC2 can easily use all the models from WoW, so while it may be sci-fi, it has all the fantasy that WC3 had.
Except it can't easily use many of the WoW models unless you don't want to publish it. Those files are large.
My other observations is that Battle.net is so broken there is no reason to make great maps (at the moment.) And also lets face it. This forum is awful. Like I love the people, the ideas and it's a great source of info. But the actual forum itself is so bad. Tigerija was right in saying that Hive has much better usability and functionality and these are issues that were known at release, but the forum remains in it's current state.
A lack of thread subscription for example means that it's unlikely I'll even return to look at this thread for a couple days... at least.
I think part of the reason is that in addition to the lack of motivation for many mapmakers since their maps will never be played, people who enjoy playing custom maps don't really have a reason to visit this site either. Non mapmakers looking to play fun custom maps would often still go to the hiveworkshop to sift through the cool customs people have made because after finding them, they could go on bnet and ACTUALLY PLAY THEM. There's way less incentive to look at the nice maps you guys have made when I know that I won't be able to find people to play them with. What's the point? Blizzard needs to get its act together before mapmaking communities can really flourish.
I personally still enjoy seeing what you guys have come up with, but there's much less reason for me to visit this site then WC3 mapmaking sites... and for most non-mapmakers there's no reason unlike in WC3.
A few factors are why I'm no longer hanging around actively, school, the editor not quite doing what I need it to yet and a few other things. But most of all I'm no longer actively posting here because of this thread's continued existence:

Cant say I blame you. I think several people took your stance with relation to that thread. Pity Sixen/vjeux cant grasp/understand/comprehend the effects of it. Oh well, their loss.
Though by way of explanation, maps take a longer to make than they had in the past, so discussion of them takes some more time to go. Personally though I check the forums multiple times a day.
I'm still here, lately even more active than before if you'd care to check the terrain board. Will actually get involved with a couple of projects as well in the near future.
I'm still alive and checking forums quite often... I mostly just do terraining myself cause I just suck with the data editor, except for editing terrain texture sets lol. And lighting..ok and some triggering but that's it really.
I also agree on what's said bij tigerja.. (might be spelling it wrong lol:P) in warcraft 3 I had a massive amount of doodads and units to pick from ranging from demons, humans, orcs, elves, even a few SC units. Plus it was alot less complicated to actually create units, upgrades and buildings. I could do ALOT in the wc3 editor because it was easy to use and if you wanted to learn you could get things done quickly. With the SC2 editor it is just too advanced, in my opinion. It takes me like 3 hours to tweak a unit to my likings and even then I still can't get everything to work properly.

I don't really think that thread made too many people leave. I'd hate to put this down to the "omg popularity system" bandwagon but I guess it is. With Cataclysm around the corner I'm kinda curious if the custom map scene will just die until HotS. I really hope Blizzard does something to draw mappers back. I swear 90% of the maps on the first 3 pages in the EU listings could be made in under 3 hours, I look down the list and think, wow, I'll just go play something else then.
I just recently joined. I've been trying to get a team for my tactical tug map but either A. my idea I guess isn't interesting enough or B. I am god awful at getting peoples attention type stuff. I Posted my starting thoughts of the map descript then later I added a list of physical map features, most of which I personally have already mapped out to some degree. Morazeed (cant remember your name) and the other fellow I cant remember his name at all though, have been very quick in response and helpful the couple times I've posted so far though whenever I had issues figuring the editor out. So far I have only recruited one member, though not through this site ironically enough. However both me and my team mate are extremely new to all this so its a lot of learning and not too too much getting accomplished. So yes, Was hoping this site would be more active cause I was really excited about making levels whether or not thousands play them. I spent hours upon hours making levels for Morrowind, Command and Conquer and other games most of which never saw the light of day to more but a dozen players but I am quite passionate about such work. Creation.
Oh it's not this site. It's the custom map scene as a whole. It's very... quiet. As someone mentioned earlier in this thread, either people are keeping their projects very quiet or there just aren't many.
I'd bet on the second. Many people are discouraged by the popularity system :( But the projects that are running are also pretty quiet... i'll probably make a thread for my map by next week, once i have ironed out the few last problems.

I dunno. I wish I knew where Salirth and Demonette went. :/

still lurking time to time... Exam finishes in few days.

Two words: Finals Soon.
My finals were in June. Also not everyone is 16/18/21 on the forum, surely.
I am 19 :P
But probably just got quiet for a little while. Who knows?

So this thread get around 3 pages. Is that me or its kind of irony ?
It's not just you.

There. Emo rant over. WTB good maps.
P.s. End the bloody bounds competition already!
