the hatchery is created by a drone and a drone is created by a.... larva :) the buildings of the zerg are living things made out of drones and drones are created by larva's so the hatchery is also created by larva's
They are based off of Alien the face crawler was first. It attached to a Drone like organisim then it died and out came a Larva which could mutate in to what we know as a Drone. Many Face Crawelers were made. Few were able to survive and get DNA for other organisms [The reason behind the lack of many zerg creatures]

If you look at the "races" data type and pick Zerg, you see, that the hatchery is the first entry for the start units. So assuming the engine spawns the start units in the given order, actually the hatchery would be first. Depending on the order the engine handles unit creations, drones or larvae would be next (when creating the hatch, does it create the larvae right away even before the engine spawns the next starting units, the drone? Or is the drone created first?)
€ a quick test showed, that the larvae are not present on the map directly after spawning a hatchery via triggers. So the correct order would be:
Hatchery -> Drone -> Overlord (also a starting unit, gets spawned before the larvae) -> larva

The backstory for the series describes the original Zerg as small larvae, the "most insignificant lifeform" on their homeworld Zerus. The Xel'Naga are responsible for manipulating the evolution of the Zerg, allowing the larval Zerg to parasitically merge with other creatures, taking control of their host's nervous systems. From here, the Zerg can mutate the host and add its DNA to the Zerg gene pool for other Zerg larvae to mutate into.
Would seem that this 'small larvae' is the original zerg unit, that could attach itself to new lifeforms. Currently it seems the larva produced at hatcheries does not possess this ability to attach to new lifeforms... maybe in HotS we will be able to latch on to 'critters' in the campaign and 'absorb' DNA so that we can create new zerg units.. unlocking it also for Multiplayer!
yeah :D that would be cool. But the hatchery can't be first because if you thing in real life, the beginning wasn't starting with a cave/house. it starts with a cell multiplying. then a baby is born and when the baby is an adult he builds a house.

...and every larva spawns from a hatchery.
Quashing the "hatchery/drone argument based on melee map settings" argument:
Are you implying that the nexus or probe came before the zealot or high templar? Boom

so where did the hatchery come from?
Xel'Naga came first!
from the lore on the wiki....
