Oh god i feel old.. Am I the only one here who enjoys ballads that are accompanied by a piano or guitar?
Sweet soothing instrumental melodies are my choice of music. Most of it ain't english though.. Its either Japanese or Chinese.
I can't stand most of the songs of the newer generations, its just noise to my ears -_- the beats are just so inconsistent.
Few bands/musicians I do like though: ATB, Train, Coldplay, Muse, Jason Mraz, Michael Buble.
I like something in pretty much every genre, but lately I've been pretty partial to 90s grunge/industrial rock. At the moment my favorite's probably Stabbing Westward. I also like trip-hop a lot too, Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky, Recoil, Morcheeba, etc.
Most of my music preferences are centered around Industrial genre and it's subgenres. And I often find it hard to dodge myself into new acts, even if they sort-of stand close to my "default" likings sound-structure-wise.
Psychic TV -
Throbbing Gristle -
Nitzer Ebb -
And then we roll on to even more: And One, Converter, Front 242, Spetsnaz, SPK, Boyd Rice, SOIL&PIMP Sessions, Xotox, Dioxyde, Vomito Negro, Audren, almighty OPP, Gregory and the Hawk, Slowdive, VNV Nation, This Morn'Omina, Mlada Fronta, Luigi Russolo...
- Ensiferum (Folk Metal): Favorite band for a long time, their songs goes form ballads to real metal music with always folk instruments implemented, amazing guitar melodies. It goes from female clean vocals to male clean vocals to male harsh vocals, sometimes in the same song, so much variety.
- Wintersun (Extreme Metal): Epic music, best solos ever, everything in this band is so well done, the musicians are REALLY skilled. Only 1 album tho, Jari, the founder of the band as well as an ex-member of Ensiferum have problems so he can't record the second album for now.
- Nightwish (Symphonic Metal): Female vocals, amazing synths sounds as well as music in general. The musical aspect of this band is pretty much their highlights.
- Alestorm (Pirate Metal): Epic pirate feeling while listening to this. Someone in the thread already pointed this band out. :)
I listen to a lot of bands and a lot of genre but I prefer "musical" metal I could say, where the music shine and is special. Well, these are the 4 bands I prefer over the rest I listen to.
It's pretty rare to see people who have even heard of Enigma.
My favorites rotate far too much but right now I'm really into:
Asian Kung-Fu Generation
Maximum Hormone (You may know them from Death Note)
Rob Zombie (Old favorite brought back because of his current involvement with the Oregon School for the Deaf from my hometown. He's helping Extreme Home Makeover revamp the amazing haunted house they put on every year.)
Oh, no kind of metal is bullshit, pretty much all bands in the genres have either good lyrics, instrumental parts or both. It's just that the heavier styles of metal just tend to bore me. The whole "omg if you don't like this you're not a true metalhead" is just as pretentious as the whole rap scene those folks are always hating on. That, and I literally can't hear the difference between some of the trash metal I've heard - sometimes it really does turn into just drumming as fast as you can, slamming on a guitar and screaming as hard as you can, even if they do it in a really artsy manner.
Dream Theater (oh you stupid idiots, sending Mike Portnoy away when he just wanted a break after 25 years of non-stop action)
Iron Savior (Underrated german power metal band)
Masterplan (generally awesome, especially Sail On)
Hammerfall (just the instrumental pieces like Something For The Ages and In Memoriam)
Soul Sanctuary (pretty new band, pretty awesome debut album, expecting alot from these guys!)
Bullet For My Valentine (not really THAT into screamo, but from time to time it's nice)
and further i like some songs from Metallica, Solar Fragment, Breaking Benjamin, The Killers, Muse, 3 doors down.
And now for something completely different:
My favorite songs to play on the piano are
Nocturne op.9 No.2 by Chopin,
Maple Leaf Rag
And i write rock/techno/metal/classical crossovers :P

One man for you: Jesse Cook. His guitar play is all soothing and sweet and awesome. and are must-listen.
@s3rius: Go Video game music wise, I think we can all agree this is a In fact, the soundtracks of all 3 games bring back so many good memories. I've rarely heard music that enhances the game so well, that fits flawlessly with the characters, the theme, the rhythm, music that drags you so deep within the world.
Some other soundtrack which sucked me in is 's. This ode literally writes '' E P I C '' all over the sky.
