So, I just recently started rewatching the lost series, I'm sure at least some of you've seen it. It's the best tv-series I've ever stumbled upon.
- Anyways, the purpose of this thread is to get some answers to some of the questions that I haven't managed to look up and get an answer to. Do any of you know what the giant stone foot is, and who built it? I haven't found it mentioned anywhere in the series itself. Then again, I've completely forgotten episodes 5 and 6.
I've found that with some careful digging, all questions in Lost are eventually answered, albeit in a shady or lame fashion. If you have a question, shoot, I pretty much know the series inside out by now.
On a last note, if you're still reading, HERE BE SPOILERS. Many more to come probably too.
As for the giant stone foot: it was built by 'a' civilization that lived on the island somewhere before Richard arrived. Most of that stuff is never shown in detail, but the show insinuates heavily that people have always lived on the Island, and that all the old ruins and buildings are remnants of older civilizations there. It's also insinuated that the 'game' of black vs white has been going along since the beginning of time. Basically, 'expeditions' of countless civilizations in a row are 'lured onto' the island to participate in this 'game' and leave their own traces there. The foot specifically would have come from an Egyptian 'colony' that lived there, as an ode to one of their gods (Taweret, god of fertility and childbirth).
Richard is the black guy or the 'other'? I'll assume he's the black guy (as in black vs white)
Might be a dumb question, but does that mean that both Jacob and Richard have been manifested in different forms throughout history? That seems weird to me, as they stranded on the island as normal humans? So did the previous black and whites feel like taking new forms or what?
Wait, what? Richard is this guy. He came to the island on the Black Rock, as demonstrated in episode... 6, I think, of Season 6. He's kind of an 'advisor' to the others who has been around basically forever, as far as they know. He's more of a right-hand man of Benjamin Linus, and doesn't have a huge lot to do with Jacob and the Man in Black specifically.
For as far as we know 'for sure', Jacob is the 'man in white' and I don't think the 'man in black' is ever given a name. While they did come to the island as normal humans, they assumed the roles of black vs white in that episode that shows 'the beginning' (S6E...13?). It seems obvious, also from that episode, that Jacob ""creates"" the MiB and then has to 'contain him' by playing 'man in white'.
What you say is definitely insinuated, though; Egyptian society flourished between 2500 and 1000 B.C., and the arrival of young Jacob and MiB is insinuated to be somewhere between the year 500 B.C. and 1300 A.D. Seeing as how there's Egyptian presence on the island, it seems only logical that young Jacob and MiB are basically ancient versions of Jack, Kate, Locke and all the other Oceanic survivors, and that MiB and the position of 'man in white' have been around way longer than shown in 'the beginning'; since at least somewhere between 2500 and 1000 B.C.
Tying into this is the pretty much confirmed fact that smokey can only take the form of people that have been killed; it'd be logical for him to assume the form of "Man in black" (the guy played by Titus Welliver anyway, who'se name we never learn) after Jacob killed him by throwing him into the 'souce'.
Well yeah, that is how Lost works; they just put mystery upon mystery and didn't have enough time to reveal and show everything in the end. Pretty much of all of it can logically be explained, but as you can see by my explanations these things would've required several additional episodes to make everything obvious.
What's with Pablo and Nikki, it seems to me that the producer just wanted Boone and Shannon back and used these two as substitutes, but killed them half into season 3... So weird.
Btw, the Man in Black his name is Samuel. Richard crashed on the Black Rock and was a slave on the ship. The first man to greet him was Samuel and Samuel didn't seem excited to see him, eventually Richard met Jacob and Jacob blessed him with the power of immortality and Richard has been around ever since trying to find someone "special" which you will find out what that means in Season 6.
P.S. Watch out the man in black can assume forms of other beings. (The Black Horse Kate sees, the Black Spider that paralyzes Nikki and Paolo. Etc. keep your eyes out.)

Pablo and Nikki were just a random additional story arc. No clue why they got put in, maybe they just needed filler episodes.
Ok, so stop asking for spoilers, the series will reveal most of these questions to you by the end of the show, which is 6 seasons.
Yeah, except they don't, which is the problem. Every mystery has an insinuated solution, but all of it requires some thinking to actually fill in the dots. It's not like they actually ever simply say "Polar bears are on the island because the Dharma initiative brought them to study their behaviour on the island, and they escaped after/during the purge when Dharma buildings came in disuse". They just insinuate that by showing you the Dharma initiative, polar bears, polar bear cages, the purge and one line about how the Dharma initiative once brought polar bears to the island.

Hmm, do they actually mention 'Samuel'? What episode is that? Because if it's the one with Richard history, the name isn't really reliable; he takes on the appearance of a person he's killed there, like he usually does; people used to call him Locke in S5 and S6.

So much insinuated xD
What I meant in the previous post was that I was unsure whether Richard was the 'other' (the advisor) or the man in black :)

10 seasons were needed. Definetly
