Wow. This topic is full of hate that it feels like we're dealing with Justin Bieber. =\
Well, I don't think people hate it 'per se' (they probably have issues with their own maps if they do), but there are people who dislike it - this is a thread asking for those opinions, so you're bound to find it heavy-sounding. I doubt anyone here really raises his fist to the sky while exclaiming the mapname, though. In the end we're all mapmakers so Ecko's my fellow there I guess - it's just that I think is map's overrated and I'm bitter by the fact that it's the only AoS map out there, currently.
For the most part I was next to my tower, and the enemy hero would run up the lane, and ta da all my health gone. You speak of those tactics that you mentioned as if they were something I would have overlooked, plz mate, more credit kthx. It is true that they have different gameplay but that is largely due to it's imbalance. The gameplay in Dota evolves every map edition, as it would in Sotis or any other AoS map.
The third paragraph you just basically rewrote what I wrote earlier, so it appears we entirely agree on that subject.
That is why people hate it ... I like Eck, I even offered my services to him about 8 months ago, but he didn't want to take me up on that offer. He is not the most talented map maker out there, but you do not have to be to have a well played map. I think people were expecting something amazing in Sc2, yet when they play Sotis it is honestly worst than Dota ever was, even pre-frozen throne. It is a hard job doing both the engine side and the data side of a Dota game, especially when real life has a huge calling - and most importantly, it just simply takes so long to do things in Sc2 - unlike Wc3.
It is not really blind hate as a discussion about Sotis's faults - which is a good thing. I am sure Eck is well aware of the faults of his map, and at no time was anything directed towards him or his map in a way he could not read and take inspiration from to fix things.
Well take a look at my map, Phant3m and Phantom Mode ... my map is the better map, has the better engine, has the more unique features. But when you take on a juggernaught that is in the top 10, and they *cough*copy*cough* your ideas, then there is not much incentive for people to play your map.
If a new AoS was to come along, which I am sure there will be a couple before midyear, it has to be something absol.fucken.utly amazing to take down Sotis, as people are use to what they play everyday, even if what they play is shit. It is overrated, it is a shit map, and when something better comes along, we have to pray to god that people get behind it - talk about it, advertise it, make commentaries for it - so it can take the throne off Sotis, otherwise it will disappear like everything else into the darkness that is the popularity system.
Because it's a shameless rip-off, right down to the forested-lower-left-vs.-blighted-upper-right layout. It's just a bid for a piece of that fuckin DOTA pie like all the other imitators.
And it took me two games to discover I could force a stalemate with endless Infested Terrans.
Which hero was it? And what was your hero, the relative levels between you two, and gear for both? To be blunt, it's a bit stupid to complain about imbalance unless you have good evidence...
Unix has been acknowledged as OP by the Devs and will be fixed in 4.0 (which is coming any day now) Until then, AoE spells do a good number on the ITs.
The overall impression I get is that a map has to be something "OMGWTFBBQ this is crazygood" to get above "this is a piece of junk" level for you guys. This is sad, because there are plenty of maps that are perfectly fun if you take the time.
Also, you claim to be not "blind hating" on sotis, then you go and say "...as people are use to what they play everyday, even if what they play is shit. It is overrated, it is a shit map..." Hypocrite much?
I would like to see some competition for SotIS though, as competition can only benefit the players. I just don't care to play Fantasy AoS #327. I'd be interested in other Starcraft themed ones though...
Mate, I am starting to think you are blindly defending Sotis, yes Sotis is imbalanced, every game is, except of course rock, paper, scissors - as soon as you add any more variables than that it becomes imbalanced. I was not complaining about imbalance, I was stating that it is imbalanced, and the reasons why people would dislike it because of that imbalance.
I am not hating on Sotis, I was agreeing with Mozared with a statement that from my point of view it is a shit map - which means it could be a lot better. And also please don't take my comments out of context, post the entire sentence, not half of one and half of another, it makes you look like a troll. FYI, the half comment you copied about "...as people are use to what they play everyday, even if what they play is shit." goes for say half of the top 10 maps, it was not directed solely at Sotis, but merely an overall observation of the current state of custom maps.
@SoulCarverr: but i don't like LoL, i like SotIS! -_-
@DogmaiSEA:
A: I explicitly stated that i think sotis has flaws and imbalances. I also stated that i think skill and teamwork largely determine winners, not imbalances. And whoop-a-dee-do about your history; Just because YOU lose at SotIS doesn't make it imbalanced (again, NOT saying that i think it's perfectly balanced). If it is so imba then prove it to me by winning against a team with superior teamwork via one of these "OP" heroes.
B: You seem to think that calling a map "shit" equates to just calling it "decent". If that's the case, then i think i get what you're saying, but if not, you ARE being a hypocrite.
You've been playing dota for 8 years. So, you think the "dota" genre has reached its limit? No. Games like these will continue to find new mechanics and unique heroes that dota has never made before. This is called innovation. Did you really think you could make a great game with your assistance? No. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. So don't facepalm on us.
i tried it yesterday and it is confusing as hell. don't get it. why am i running out of my base and gettin two shot after 30 seconds from some glowing hydra?
there is now explantion. there is no feedback if you buy something in the shop.
sotis had the chance to make me like it but it failed hard

The imbalance is not the meat of the issue, my main point is that SotIS is the McDonalds of SC2 maps, pure lowest common denominator and an uninspired cash-in on the DOTA fad. I try to avoid products of greed if I can, as a personal rule.
edit: ok I got distracted by Mozared's pik.
For my dose of MOBA, I'm really looking forward to Realm of the Titans. It's having its closed beta now and the reason why this one stands out is because there's much more tactics to it than the standard AoS maps (It's actually kinda based off Tides of Blood from W3FT if anyone played that)

uh.....
MOBAs by their nature are complex. It takes a whole site of tutorials and guides to explain how to play one. Not like you can quite cram that in game :P
Tides of Blood was grand. The original DOTA and Tides of Blood both were - the DOTA allstars maps and the like I tried, and disliked all of them. ToB was well balanced and a lot of fun.
Anyway - I'm looking forward to AoS 2. I'm just doing the terrain, but from that I've seen that map's going to remove SOTIS from its throne. There's some serious work and thought in that. Or come to think of it, I don't think it'll replace SOTIS, but co-exist with it, as it's not as direct as SOTIS. Oh well, it's still gonna be awesome.

But SotIS HAS unique elements (the rune creeps ATM, but there are.... others coming in 4.0).
Wow. This topic is full of hate that it feels like we're dealing with Justin Bieber. =\
i hate it because it's garbage compared to HoN. It's even worse than LoL.

If he's blind, his defense would be illogical. And if you truly think he's blind, then you must be blind.
Does an AOS map really deserve this much comentary.... I think not.
Go play LOL if you want a good game devoted to this style of play.
