To me, This whole bill is horseshit, Think of it this way. IT means if we post a video to youtube of starcraft then blizzard can Remove youtube from the web...
This also applys to any site you post the video.
This also means Microsoft can remove google.com... Yes thats right, No GOOGLE... so we get stuck with the monopoly that is microsoft.
It has the power to OVERRIDE the Digital Millennium Copyright Act
For us as SC2 mapster this mean no more live streams, no more newbie Wednesdays no more Terraining Thursdays if blizzard decides for all americans.
So mapster will just be a place to Post Written information NO Video, No screenshots, just plain text. oh wait there will be no SC2mapster for NA people.
Even if your not in the USA find a congressman and contact them and tell them how the sites population will be effected Without the NA, this site will be split in half, and Will probably fail after that, Mapster needs both EU and NA, BADLY.
I urge you to contact your congressman and Speak your concerns, If no one speaks IT WILL PASS, as of right now, the bill is about even on both sides
Note worse yet, All your Favorite game reviews and Movie reviewers will be gone, that means No thatguywiththeglasses, and no angry joe show, Since these are American based.
Companys will Fall, Google a major corporation will be hit hard, and a HUGE loss of jobs will result.
Please Help out, Contact your states Congressman, Or contact your states House of Rep member about the Protect IP bill, Which is also Bull shit bill, You think the economy is bad now, If this passes, We will be worse off then the great depression.
Not only that, But it makes anyone who Views copyrighted materials a criminal So if I watch a Video on youtube that was copyrighted my Ip address is taken down and I could serve jail time.
While I don't agree with the bill....As far as I can tell this only affects mapster if blizzard decides to hurt us- which we know they won't do, because we already have their support....I mean really. They give us beta keys and invite us to press events. If they didn't like what we did, they wouldn't do these kinds of things for us.
For example- yes, I stream footage of the editor during Newbie Wednesday. Yes, it "would make unauthorized streaming of copyrighted content a felony"(Wikipedia). But Blizzard would authorize it, no? This would give blizzard the option to shut that down- but not anybody else. Or is this saying the DoJ would override Blizzard and take it down w/o their permission? Or am I misunderstanding? Regardless, I don't like it =/

Blizzard wouldn't, But activision would if you piss them off.. plus the copyright holders of the songs that are in starcraft 2 could take down the site if anyone puts them in their video.
Also note, that all icons on your desktop in your videos, photoshop, windows, IE8(firefox is against the bill so is google), can all result in mapster being taken down, plus livestream would be taken down defiantly, plus Curse itself could, just because its linked to other things.
The worse part, is they need no warnings or proof...
i smell something similar to what happened during the red scare in Russia -_- total destruction of anything that Stalin didn't like without any need of proof, except replace Stalin with big business...
America hasn't been around for a long time. I guess you guys just go through stuff other countries did a couple of hundred years ago. Doesn't mean it's right or makes sense. What America probably needs at this point, going by all the bullshit that is going on these last few years, is someone to clean house in the country. And someone at the top who can get shit done without being another puppet of some lobby or another.
So, just in case you think about a revolution in the near future, lemme introduce you to the favorite way our neighbors the french got rid of their leaders, that may help you when your government is screwing you all over.
Everyone, meet the Guillotine.
Jokes aside, this is just the latest in a long chain of stupid ideas governments had around the globe. They see what power the internet actually is and they fear that power more than anything else. So they try to regulate it, impose laws on it and it all fails due to the nature of the web. It only works for places like China where they just drag you out of your home in the middle of night if you try to go past their little green wall.
All-in-all: I'm so damn happy I'm not living in that badshit-crazy country you people are stuck in. No matter how good the industry there is for my field of work.
lol it's actually a bit worse than you guys think. There are 3 bills that are being forced through government that will have a negative impact on the internet as a whole.
Allows the Department of Justice to circumvent the legal system by censoring a website from search engines, shutting down their domain name and cutting all revenue streams without informing the defendant. This can be done without your knowledge meaning you lose your primary means of defense before having the chance to defend your case in court. Anyone could be shut down through "guilty until proven innocent" just by suggesting that their website is "dedicated to infringing activities." The bill does a poor job of specifying what that means and would allow for a very broad range of targets.
Makes copyright infringement a federal crime with a maximum sentence of 5 years in prison. This bill further widens the scope of targets by making any source of illegal streaming (all social networks, all video uploading sites, all streaming sites, all P2P sites etc) count towards a "ten strikes" program. This can be skipped if the total economic value of your "infringing content" exceeds $2,500 to the copyright holder or you.
Thus if the copyright owner was selling the content for $10 but you put it in a video that makes $2,500 from advertisements (this is incredibly common with popular YouTube channels), you skip all ten strikes. By the same token, if they sold the content for millions while you made nothing, you still skip all ten strikes. This value counts total revenue and not profit after expenses making it relatively easy for a copyright owner to infer hypothetical losses that would fast track you to jail.
Combines the two bills from the Senate into an even broader bill from the House of Representatives. As with the above, infringement becomes a felony with up to 5 years in prison. Likewise, the Department of Justice can shut down and censor websites without their knowledge. The main difference is that the requirement for this action is described as having "only limited purpose or use other than infringement." If the copyright owner decides that your website is not useful (to them) outside of "potential" copyright infringement they can shut you down. This is made worse by overriding the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and placing all responsibility on site owners.
As it stands now, if a website is not directly aware of infringing content they are immune so long as they cooperative with the copyright owner to remove the content. By good faith a website can continue to function. This bill would change this by making the site owner liable for ALL infringement regardless of whether or not they were aware of it. This will force websites to censor themselves as a means to prevent being shut down by the odd rogue user that breaks the rules. Even then they could still be shut down if the copyright owner is not satisfied. Given the painful lack of specific guidelines for avoiding this situation, the mere existence of the bill would punish site owners by deterring anything that could be misconstrued as infringement.
As it stands, if any of these pass, censorship will gain a foothold in America. While some of the motives behind these bills make sense (for the politicians), this is being horribly obscured by the more obvious fact that they are being bought by the businesses that want to use these new "toys" to decimate their opponents. Many businesses that support these bills have already begun labeling Google, Costco, every blogging site ever and so forth as "rogue sites" showing that they fully intend to abuse them.
we seriously need to guillotine the corrupt politicians behind sopa. they should know that nothing gives them the right to do this shit. and i mean nothing. god itself disagrees im sure. i hope if they fucking achieve this twisted goal of there's that they all plunge into hell. censorship = crime unleashed. the part of this i don't like is they have bad enough censorship as it is in this country in tv... and even video games... blah blah its for the children... wake up they don't want IT! i mean ffs. how stupid are they they make me feel sick inside. censorship hides the truth which makes evil more widespread. and each new law adds more loop holes... so yea screw it. sorry for my rant but i hate this awful idea they should all have their bodies scattered to the winds for even thinking of it and have what's left over sent to hell... again sorry for my rant... end
I hate that living in Canada means we can't vote on American shit even though we are affected the exact same way by their laws pretty much.
Regardless of these bills, if anyone cares, Activision actually asked me and Sixen to take down the D3 app we had on the app store... so it's not like these bills are that far off on the problems we have now. Remember Ryan's SCU video?
On the flipside, my youtube channel was granted ad monetization, but ONLY on tutorial vids and not trailers or ingame clips.
IP protection is a load of shit in the wrong hands, it only makes the rich - richer.
Granted, I want my IP protected in Tofu, against Blizzard/Activision, but at the same time, record companies exist to rip off everyone (Who the fuck pays $10 for a song?) including the artists. Movie Studios are over priced ... I have to pay $20 to see a non-3D movie in the Cinema in Australia, this is twice the price as the US or even little old New Zealand right the fuck next door ... I see maybe one movie a year because I want to see it on the big screen - the majority of movies are shit and if I saw them I would be asking for my money back which they would not do. Then it comes to DVD like six weeks after it stops playing in theatres and they want to charge me $30! No, go get fucked, I ain't paying $30 for a movie because it is simply not worth it.
They are having a huge fight in Australia at the moment where the American Recording Industry has sued our second biggest ISP (They skipped Telstra because in the leaked cables on Wikileak, they say Telstra has a history of fighting long and hard and dirty and they simply couldn't win) ... because they want the laws changed to have a three strikes program.
In Australia we get nearly no TV shows - that is why Australians offend. And when this is told in court to the other side, they say, oh no you can buy like 60% of it online or some shit ... WTF should I have to fucken buy a FREE tv series online just to watch it once? IE, a TV series that would be shown on FREE to AIR TV. No one uses cable TV here, we have youtube.
They are not going to stop it, TOR exists and whilst I know of it I have never used it cause I ain't even touching that thing with a 10 foot pole, if the net does get censored VPN are going to spring up everywhere, TOR is going to have a field day and move the general population of law abiding cizitiens (who the majority would pay fucken $1/$2 for a movie, a fair fucken price) underground with the pedos and anarchists.
Don't you yanks get it yet ... that your whole government is run by the corporate world ... nearly every law submitted in the last 10 years (to do with digital/internet) is there to protect the richest fucken people in the country's profits. I cannot park in my City for less than $3.50 an hour ... that is a fucken rip off? So you know what? I don't fucken go into the city.
We have a train station near our house which is a major hub for the "richest" part of the metropolitian area. We had a 900 bay carpark that was free to park in so you could catch the train ... you know what the corrupt council did? (Just before god striked down their chambers and burned them to the ground ... I am not kidding) they said no one used the carpark and took a photo of it on a Sunday afternoon (This thing is completely full from Mon-Sat), and used that as their proof, then sold the fucken land to the assholes who built the new shopping center across the tracks who charge $25 a day in parking fees! This is after they recieved over 10,000 submissions against it and not a single one for it. They said, oh, you will have the free 20 bay park and ride carpark next door, and you know what they fucken did? The day after they sold it they made it into 2 hour parking!
You want us to catch the train to ease congestion on the highways/freeways, and then took a 900 bay carpark off us (plus another 100 cars in surrounding smaller carparks sold off too) and then expect us to pay $25 a day in parking fees (the average pay would be like 100 a day from working) just to get to fucken work on the fucken train because your a bunch of corrupt fucks that should be shot in the head?
I'm sick of all this crap personally, Just because taxpayers from all over pay for this crap, its a waste of funds, I say Make Pirating legal, and just tell everyone that it is their responsibility to protect their property in the confines of the law, such as Encryption, Cinivia, and stuff like that to make it so people cant do that, but no.... because a multibillion $ company cant pay 5-20 Tech guys to build this for them....
Is it bad that I have no problem with these bills......
I mean you guys are complaining that it will ruin your "stealing". If the content is too expensive to purchase legally go with out. You wont be missing much.
I don't watch movies. I don't listen to music. I hardly use you tube.
Most file sharing can be done with out the internet.
Eh. If it means prices for good movies will go down, because studios will actually make what the should ... great!!!!
Eh. If it means shitty movie studios can no longer blame pirating for shitty profits, and end up stop making shitty movies GREAT!!!!!
I will admit I have pirated a few things in my life, but most those things I have already purchased in the past.
Oh it will also improve the stability of the internet so my gaming will be even more enjoyable.
Eh there's my 10 cents.

Actually you have it WAY off, These bills give the copyright holders rights to takedown any sites without notice, and get people locked up WITHOUT TRIAL, WITHOUT PROOF, It only affects the us so it wont help with pirating, if copyright holders gave a damn they would use Other ways to make it so their files cant be copied or stolen or ripped from a cd or uploaded. THese bills are garbage.
It makes Game replays on youtube illegal, literally... Viewing a picture on google search. that signature would make you a criminal... No more logos, no more Avatars can be taken. no pictures of gameplay, hell if microsoft wanted to they could throw you in jail for making a tutorial on how to open control panel....

Yup, Which will in turn be crap. We will have to change our DNS to out of country just to Operate.
