If he weren't a self-proclaimed griefer I might have hesitated to call him a worthless fat fuck.
Hardcore and rerolling is pointless because of the static leveling, a game mechanic that is objectively bad. Seriously, there's avante garde game design and there's stupidity on a profound level.
Don't get me started with the delayed PvP. So much for that special awkward newb phase that is the innocent, golden era of every online PvP experience. Now straight out of the gate, everyone is going to be double-triple-quadruple decked with the most obscene gear Real Money can buy. What a wash.
Then again, who can argue with 10+ million? I can. D2's former glory, and a bunch of WoW nerds desperately looking for some variety, is what sold D3. I wonder, do internal analysts see D3 as a definitive success? Because there's one thing money can't buy: brand recognition.
All the fanbois bitched me out when I said the game had no lasting appeal. Now those mouth-breathers are long gone to the newest Call of Booby with zero memory in their Ritalin-soaked brains of what a Diablo was, while I'm still here. I'm a legit fan that stills care about Diablo (even though Blizzard North got shit-canned, the spirit of the game endures with the fans). I might even get the expansion because I now have the proper expectation that I'm barely getting my money's worth once and not ten times over like previous games.
I agree with Tainted on the story. D3 did a much better job at story telling, the problem was the story itself. There was too much that was predictable or wasn't strong enough as a plot element. D2 in comparison might have felt better story-wise because it was told at your own pace. You got the story mainly through the NPCs, meaning you could get a full story if you talked to everyone or none at all if you were power-gaming your way through.
Of course, most people don't bother with story after the first couple times through. D2 holds up better for not sticking it in your face each time you go through the game.
-edit-
Also should probably note that the thread title is misleading. He wasn't fired, since he's still working at Blizzard. He's simply no longer Lead Designer on Diablo 3. We don't know what he's moved on to and whether or not it's a demotion, that would be purely speculation at this point.
It's just ridiculous that Sanctuary seems to be run by a bunch of incompetents. "Oh your PRECIOUS LAWS" bemoans Tyrael, like c'mon. It's freaking heaven. Are the laws not divinely inspired? Or is the place supposed to be some kind of half-baked democracy? Maybe it's an analogy for D3's dev process.
TBH the only story out of Diablo that I cared much about was Diablo 1. The atmosphere it had made the most impact on my young, impressionable gamer mind. Now I'm mostly jaded to story, whether it's fed to me on a silver spoon or if I had to hunt for it through endless conversations. The Mass Effect series was probably the last great story experience I had, but it was a pathetic let down at the very end.

Mass effect may just be the best story I've seen in a video game. If it weren't for those last 20-30 minutes it would have been damn near perfect. Still too many questions left and plot holes even after the ending dlc. Bioware did a great job with getting you attached to characters. I'm not going to lie, my eyes got a little bit watery at some parts.
Turian brandy, triple filtered, then introduced into the suit through an Emergency induction port...
I found an interesting article about d3's playerbase how it's continously declining, but rapidly!! This is how many ppl are playing it daily. Green = d3 / Blue = Leagoe of Legends.
You can see how it sucks the LoL playerbase and other games too.
Note this was July last year,up until recently. We can see the sales launch how amazingly succesfful it was and how only shortly after a steep decline whilst other games recovered and remained steady.
It's just not right though. So Jay loses interest in the uninteresting game he developed, and everyone else has to clean up the mess. Years of their professional lives that they'll never get back.
All I can say is this new game better be a home run, or else... my diatribe about its legendary suckitude will be twice as big. You don't want that, Jay. You're on notice...

You ever worked on a project where you put your blood sweat and tears into it, which people have loved yet more people have criticized continually, despite all your efforts to improve said project? Have you ever been the face of a project that's been widely criticized?
Game designers do not usually take up the spotlight, it's only been fairly recent that Blizzard decided to put a few developers out there to connect with the fans. They're not immune to all the harsh words being said to both them or their projects, and I take it (especially after the Facebook fiasco) it's become too stressful for Jay.
Lets put this into perspective. We don't know what elements of Diablo 3 he was directly involved in, since the project is very much built by the team and not an individual. The unfortunate reality is all the pressure is put on him since he is the 'Face' of Diablo 3.
Ex-D2 developer David Brevik criticizes D3, says there are things in the game he wouldn't have done.
Jay Wilson, in a reply to a coworker (on facebook), says "Fuck that loser"
Some people saw this on facebook, insert internet backlash.
He later apologized for his actions, of course. In context, he was talking to his coworkers offhand, not publicly announcing it. The problem was he posted on Facebook, which publicly announces it.

No, I changed my mind. If Jay's gonna operate on "do as thou wilt" with no remorse in his online escapades, a shitstorm is exactly what he reaps from fans all around the world operating on that very same principle (or lack thereof). Regardless, the game itself suffers from some easily identifiable and correctable mistakes. I mean, no one forced him to take that lofty position. When you accept that kind of responsibility there is room for honest mistakes but none for bungling buffoonery.
Read the actual article. Hughston replies on Facebook that 'the tone of it irritates him', which makes perfect sense - Brevik never directly insults but spends the entire interview saying "yeah they made decisions I wouldn't have made" and follows that up with "perhaps they took in the wrong people, also I guess having the right people DOES matter!". If you've just released a game and someone's saying that about it, it's not all that crazy if you get annoyed. You being Chris Haga in this case. Jay's reply really isn't all that bad, he's simply saying "don't let it get to you Haga, we made this game and we'll stand by it". On a private page even - this wasn't something he was saying 'as Blizzard', but an off-hand 'I'll just throw this in the group' comment towards 'the guys'. I wouldn't say he's "operating on a 'do as thou wilt' basis with no remorse in his online escapades".
Where did I breathe a word about the article? If anything I respect the candidness of "fuck that loser."
The online escapades I'm referring to is his swath of virtual death and destruction against helpless noobs everywhere. He thinks they can eat shit? I think he can eat shit. Simple mathematics.
I'm talking about putting personal entertainment above human dignity, the life-ain't-fair-so-I'll-make-it-even-less-fair mentality, emotional retardation, call it what you will...the online "griefer" that is Jay Wilson, renowned teabagger and concocter of human misery.

This is why the guy was fired basically imo.
Thanks for the chart.
Btw, he wasn't fired. He's now a game director on an unonnaunced blizzards game :3
When I see the game I show believe it :)
Well, Blizz clearly knows something I don't.
It's just not right though. So Jay loses interest in the uninteresting game he developed, and everyone else has to clean up the mess. Years of their professional lives that they'll never get back.
